MDD are a very popular size, and there are a lot of reputable artists who will help you with a custom face-up for exactly what you're looking for. I went with one from an artist on Etsy named ShiNesWorkshop. She has completed examples on Etsy, and on her social media. She was super easy to work with, and communicative. It was 150 when I got her, I think her prices now are 180 for a basic face-up. That includes the cost of the head and shipping. DD Heads are compatible across all bodies too, so don't be worried about buying a doll body second hand from somewhere like Mandarake or off of Yahoo Auction Japan. You'll need a proxy to bid on stuff from Yahoo Japan though, I use FromJapan, and they've been fantastic for me so far, only charge between 3 and 7 US for commission. You can get a good condition MDDIII (last gen body, cuirrent is F3) for around $200-250 on either of those sites if you check regularly.

Me personally, I have never once considered this issue, but for everything other than the face would a general purpose alcohol wipe be good enough? I haven't noted a particular accumulation of dust on my dolls (oil, for that matter) but they're moved around a fair bit, too.

Sometimes I feel like the way I take my girls out and about with me on a regular basis would stress some of you out. They're not usually in cases or anything, they get exposure to the sun occasionally, and some of them have even been stained accidentally. I personally find it more fun to include them in my life, but I respect people who keep them pristine in a case or on a shelf. It takes all kinds.

It's generally okay to get vinyt wet, it's really not gonna damage the doll (unless the water is dirty or saltwater). The only parts of the doll that would be prone to damage are the internal frame and possible the faceup if it's made by an artist, but as long as you dry your doll it will be fine. If you want to be extra sure, expose the internal frame and dry it too. I've completely submerged some of my dolls and never had issues with anything.

What the hell is going on with Smartdoll? Danny is now selling the heads for the milk girls for $400 bucks, with limited chances to get bodies, if ever. I haven't been keeping up with all of Danny's bullshit, but didn't he also claim at the very beginning that Smartdoll Mirai would be a fully robotic smartdoll that could move around and basically act as an Alexa? And before the first Smartdoll was ever released he uploaded a video of the prototype moving around, which turned out to be faked with extra motors etc. Everyone who buys Smartdolls just seem to have conveniently forgotten all of that. I don't know what genius he could think these dolls are. DESU, they don't stand out at all from similar dolls whatsoever. Hell, the elbow joints aren't even the double-joint type, and if there's a body joint it's hidden by the bra. And who knows what the state of the knee joints is. Every other site shows the joints on their blank dolls so you can get an idea of how they move, but he not only doesn't do that, he just throws out 6 photos that all show exactly the same pose from a slightly different angle.

You can actually pop out the arm joint a bit and it becomes a double-joint, but you'd never know it looking at their promo photos, which are absolutely useless and constantly piss me off. I don't know why this man cannot seem to take a frontal shot, a side portrait, and some nudes. The other "aesthetic" photos are fine for showing what the doll could look like, but I want to see the base fucking doll. Kanu's tan is a decent color- and it's only for one doll who's been out of print for ages. Sun skin is incredibly faint. White skin was pretty striking, but it's out of print, too, and NS/SWS are basically two shades off from each other. Smart Doll has the better tan anyway, outside of Dollfie Icon Tawny, but she's not anime-style (and also impossible to get.) Dyeing as an option is unreliable, and paint chips. There are no good alternatives right now, and it's miserable.

Beyond that, Smart Dolls are basically just the Apple of vinyl dolls. Either you're buying them for the brand, you're buying them for A brand (i.e. lelouch or naruto,) or you want a tan/dark doll and are tired of trying to mix dye in a steel pot in your kitchen like a 17th century alchemist trying to turn your doll into gold. (Me.)

The worst part honestly is that if it wasn't for Danny actively losing his shit on a weekly basis, most of the problems about the dolls are livable. They pose well enough, they look nice enough, they can be just as much fun as other brands and hell, maybe someone out there likes that you could use Mirai's face as a garden trowel, I don't know. The dolls themselves are fine under all the bullshit, and Smart Doll wigs are honestly really top quality, especially compared to Volks. It's just a shame that the good qualities and even the bad qualities get overshadowed by the manlet running this operation.

Two things:
1) Volks wigs really aren't great. Miku's original wig, in particular, came directly from hell to vex me.
2) Whatever the material is, it rules. Mine resist frizzing, they lay the way they were styled with minimal effort, they feel nice to comb out and they don't shed much. They're just really well-made.

Volks wigs don't use heat resistant fiber (HRF) and the fibers they do use can be very staticy. SmD wigs are made with a high quality HRF and are really easy to work with. It's the same fiber used by Crobidolls in their wigs, and they're half the price as SmD wigs, which aren't available anymore anyway unless you're buying a full SmartDoll. (The long running rumor is Crobi is the company that makes the wigs for SmD anyway, and I have wigs from both as they have the only good reds I can find. They're extremely similar, so I'd say it's probably true).

Should I just go to the resin side for male dolls? Volks' are trapped in japan (sans kirito and len,) smart dolls are never in stock, obitsu discontinued everything above 50cm. Really goddamn tempted to just buy a resin body and slap a DD head on it, but I don't know anything about resin dolls and the thought of having to string them and everything worries me. I know this is the vinyl thread, but anyone here with resin dolls, I'd love to hear your experiences.

I actually prefer resin since I don't have to worry about staining. Restringing isn't so bad once you learn how to do it. I prefer it to the inner skeleton maintainance wise. I have a lot of the earlier DD3 bodies with cracks in the skeleton now that I haven't got around to repairing but when a resin BJD gets loose all you have to do is tighten the stringing or put some hotglue in the joints. They are heavier and more finicky to pose though so it is a trade off.

I bought a doll head and for once it was intentional.

Strangely enough I have an Alice that I was thinking of putting on a DDP body. Her head looks a little big for it in your photo but I have her on an MDD right now and it doesn't bother me much. I think I just have a higher tolerance for big heads in person.

I'm not liking Miki or Chihaya on it even though they're more proportionate. They're a bit more mature than I'd like for the DDP.

No real problems, I have both the DDP and a regular DD body with the f3 frame. You just have to have a bit more patience when putting the arms and legs back on and make sure that the peg and the and the hole is aligned properly.

SD clothes are too big but they can look good if you're going for an oversized look. I often buy SD-sized tops for my MDD because I like the oversized shirt with no pants -look. Skirts/pants should probably be bought in an accurate size tho.

That's the thing, it ended exactly at the highest possible bid I know my SS allows, which made me believe it was mischivious bidding of the original person I overbid (who only had a small amount of feedback) and all of the sudden there were 5 different Proxy accounts jumping in the auction, who all took perfect turns.

There are resin anime heads, and I think 2D Doll actually has a few males possibly? As far as comparison goes, resin is heavier and poseability varies by brand but my resin dolls are much lower maintenance than my vinyl. Also in all likelihood you won’t have to restring to attach a head. Most resin heads have a slit that the hook and string slide right through, and I’d suggest making a similar one in a DD head if that’s what you go with for head mobility.

Chibiusa is chubby and toddler-like in her human form but she's not MDD height until she transforms into Chibi Moon and then she's not that chubby anymore. So I don't know. Unless they're planning to put Chibiusa on the Mochi-Ashi body and then Chibi Moon on the DDP which would be an odd choice for Volks.

Can't really relate to the feeling, but I think this head could be salvaged. You could commission someone to do a new faceup and the result would probably be good. The mouth is (and will continue to be) a lot but that's a given. Or if you're artsy type you could use that as practice head for your own faceups.

I've done something where the end result is similar, I've commissioned what has turned out to be sub-par faceup artists. It's happened twice (well, maybe just once) but I've had no modding done to any of my heads so it's all been reversible at least.
