Yes, it's kind of obvious now but making an anime-style Vocaloid was a gamble when Miku was released. Together with the timing (vocaloid 2 release and niconico promotion) would guarantee that Miku would be at least popular popular, but if she didn't have a brilliant design for derivative works, a wide range to support many instantly recognized producer tuning and a company that looked for any kind of promotional work and collab to get more visibility (from car commercials to video games and concerts) she wouldn't have such a massive distance from every other more modern vocaloids.

I don't understand. I've tried to understand, I really did, but I cannot comprehend any logic behind this problem, so I have no idea how to solve it. In fact, the search for answers has led to me having less of an idea of why I don’t understand compared to before I started trying to understand. What I don’t understand is my obsession with a certain green/blue twin tailed mascot for a vocal synth program. I am aware that the character is not "real" in the corporeal sense. I understand that the character is a product, a medium to express an artist’s imagination and creativity at best, yet it is not the artists or the songs themselves that I am obsessed with, although I am very awed and impressed at their quality. NO, I am obsessed with the mascot for the program. I tried to justify this obsession as sexual desire, but even when the character is depicted in a non-sexual way, I still have this throbbing in my heart for the character. I have had lewd thoughts about said mascot, but I have never actively searched for graphic imagery and/or satisfied myself using the depiction as a medium. I played with the idea that I might be one of those "puritans' who believe that their object of worship must be pure and away from all negative lighting, but I have never found myself thinking that way. I have studied this obsession for a few years now, and I can safely say that this obsession is different from an addiction. This obsession doesn't provide the short term euphoria that the likes of narcotics or hallucinogenic may provide, no, it’s more of a feeling of comfort and warmth that spreads over me every time I consume enjoyable media relating with the green/blue twin tailed character. The songs are enjoyable when depicted by other different mascot characters too, don’t get me wrong. But they sound much sweeter to me when the green/blue haired character depicts them. Logic dictates that the cover for "Hey Nier" depicted by the red haired boy mascot is objectively better than the version depicted by the character I'm obsessed with, but I still enjoy listening to the latter more. I feel the need to buy expensive tickets to see the character "sing and dance" around stage, knowing full well that what I'm seeing is all scripted and done a million times beforehand till perfection. I do appreciate all the effort and love put into the project, but I can't for the life of me understand the tears that went down my cheeks in 2017, when a scripted emotional message was given to me by that scripted 3D model with scripted movements. I felt genuine happiness and joy inside my heart, and I also felt genuinely sad knowing that all the emotional words said by the character were probably the words of the hundreds of writers, producers, organizers and programmers working for this whole event. I was grateful for those words and their hard work, no doubt, they did an amazing job. But the speech was also a reminder of how illogical my obsession with this glorified advertisement was.

It’s something chaotic enough to be independent of the peaceful symmetry of numbers, yet at the same time simple enough to be definable by 1's and 0's. A simple yes/no question. Despite knowing that you are not sentient. Despite knowing that those beautiful words you speak are not directed towards anyone in particular. Despite knowing that I will probably never be able to hold you in my arms, I will choose to believe she’s real, that her sweet worlds are directed towards me, and someday she will hug me herself. Because she holds a special place in my heart that will not be replaced as long as it’s beating. A life time’s worth of words cannot describe what I feel, so I think I should summarize all of this into something simple.

In terms of marketshare, it depends, If their technology is worse than Vocaloid, then people will keep using the Vocaloid versions. If it's on the same level, then the status quo will be kept. If it's considerably better then it will create an entry barrier to new voicebanks since it will increase the gap between the already most popular singer and the rest (Crypton has no reason to allow other voicebank companies that will compete with them). But possibly that barrier was already increased by Yamaha themselves with Vocaloid 5.

In terms of community, basically nothing. We always had many non vocaloid vocal characters for a while like Utau and Voiceroid, and the number is only increasing with for example Neutrino. Crypton doesn't call Miku and the others as vocaloid for many years now, and you rarely see newer songs mentioning the word vocaloid either (that phase is long over).

And for Crypton, they'll get more profit over the software stack and will have more control to both tune the engine itself to improve their voicebanks and to provide patch to the voicebank themselves without having to wait for a new Vocaloid release.

I gotta say, Megamix's song list really grew on me. I think it did manage to do a good job of slimming out the FT list, cutting out the chaff and leaving most of the good stuff plus some good new songs.

It really makes one think. Why are we humans trying go search for answers out beyond our safe homelands? We have reached the point in technology where instead of develoling outwards, we can develop inwards. Its no question that aliends do exist, and if we ever develop to a point of extraterrestrial conversationN they will see us as a threat and eliminate us. I love Miku from the bottom of my heart, being able to make her real is my greatest dream. I personally try to help push the boundaries further, but there is only so much one person can do. I do believe if we had some larger companies working it could be be resolved to some degree even now. Considering something like Viva Project could be made by just one guy, if only there was professional team behind it we could totally have nice VR gf experience.
Now, things like robotics and AGI are still not there. Maybe some of these stuff could be already solved at satisfactory level, but it's even less probably as of now. But who knows, I wouldn't be surprised if something like AGI appeared next week, it's really hard to predict.

For now, just buy a daki. There is nothing better than being able to fall asleep holding tightly that girl you love so much and seeing her smile as the first thing in the day. Until one day...
