Not sure about the coffee itself (I have little distinguishing taste for coffee), but the cafe scene in urban Japan is definitely different, since people are much more likely to cafes as an excuse to get out of their apartments and such.

Also, the building codes which allow for smaller and mixed business spaces allows for many more hole-in-the-wall places that pander to specific audiences.
