Still gets regular updates, has grown significantly since 2011, and also has Western contributors these days. The wiki team does a good job at enabling that and documenting new places.

Though I have a bias there, since it is my favorite of the spinoffs. The large amount of eclectic contributions really gives it a truly dreamlike quality.

Before then I just processed the hiragana as a straight name and nothing else, since I've never seen 窓付き come up over 窓 in what little I read. I initially guessed the characters were an original name with the meaning of "that which is affixed to window," which isn't too terribly off.

Towelket gets threads every now and then, Yume Nikki too, but the problem is this board doesn't really need generals for stuff like that since like the other anon said you can just make it yourself. The other problem being there's not really much to say unless there's been some kinda updates, like with Towelkets translation efforts, Shanghai.EXE's post-dmca updates, and Yume Nikki having the little discussion it'd get in 2020 split between two websites, and half of it being discussions of composers related to Yume Nikki fangames rather than the games/fangames themselves since no one makes them anymore.

>>23734523
I feel like it's a way to say there's more to find out there, and keep the love you have for something not keep you from finding new things to love. Pretty much every single game there is in a vastly different era of time spanning across multiple different regions, imagine if you just told yourself "well, nothing will beat Cave Story for me." and how much you'd miss. At least that's how I see it.

The whole point of the game is that there's only meaning if you want there to be, but everything in it is innately meaningless. Everything you know about every location, every character, even Mado herself, is just what you've formed through your own experiences or others retelling their experiences of the game that have influenced you. The only things you know for sure are what's in her room and what happens in her room and the balcony and that's about it, and even that's up for debate depending on how you see it as the stairs came from nothing.

Everything you know about every location, every character, even Mado herself, is just what you've formed through your own experiences or others retelling their experiences of the game that have influenced you. Things that may seem incredibly obvious to you or I may be read in a totally different way by someone else; for example how some think Mado was simply beaten as a child, or she was mentally abused, or she was even raped all from the same handful of locations. The only things you know for sure are what's in her room and what happens in her room and the balcony and that's about it, and even that's up for debate depending on how you see it as the stairs came from nothing. It's all up for interpretation, and I think that's why the games so beloved and why it's become such an influential thing over the years.

It's a great game. If you ignore the fandom, and see it with your own eyes, I think you'd appreciate what one person was able to do. Kikiyama did the same with yume nikki, even if the types of games they are plenty different, in terms of gameplay and mechanics.

Almost all the characters, inter-character relationships, and dialogue play very heavily to the Tumblr crowd; not the social justice part, but the soft, one-dimensional, feel-good part that thinks spaghetti/anime/tsundere is an entire personality (although to be fair, they aren't like that all the time -- just most of the time). There are a couple characters that are slightly morally complex, but you never are made to feel like the "enemies/monsters" (with the exception of the main antagonist) ever do "bad" things even when they're at their worst/lowest points. There are a few threads of rudimentary fourth wall-breaking running throughout the game that most Undertale fans think are brilliant because they've never played a game with elements like that before, but those threads are not poorly executed -- they're resolved satisfactorily enough toward the end of each playthrough.

The quasi-danmaku fight system is an interesting and unique choice, and battles are mostly simple puzzles of discovering the pacifist way to end the fight, unless you're going the Genocide route. Most battles are okay, some are good but again rely a lot on dialogue that is funny or cute exactly once. Boss battles are very, very good - Genocide route boss in particular is a superb multi-hour challenge. Music is excellent and the strongest part of the game. Locations in the game are pretty forgettable.

Like >>24198586 said, you complete it once (playing through each of the three routes) and you're done because you know all the jokes, story twists, and pacifist ways to end battles because they're all pretty simple. I don't think any character is interesting enough to post-game speculate about, with the minor exception of one. It's an alright game that has its good parts, but a lot of it is geared toward a specific audience (it's hard to find an adjective that isn't "Tumblr," because that's exactly who the audience is). Maybe just play one of the Mother games instead.

I think it's worth giving any game like this a shot, the worst that'll happen is you waste 6 or 7 hours of your time. It's not the masterpiece the western world makes it out to be but I genuinely see it as a good game overall. Like the other anon said, the music lifts it amazingly high, but the battle system while unique isn't really exceuted as well as you'd hope for something so 2hu inspired. The sequel does it much better, but I've got significantly less to say about that in terms of both positives and negatives both as it's just a part 1 of a bigger whole and also just not as well written. You'll get some laugh and bob your head between both games enough to make it worth it anyways.

As an aside, and apologies for not including this in the original post and not being very related to the thread, the game also apparently has a ton of content hidden through data. I only know of the existence of one character, essentially being a Uboa ripoff only you can't intentionally trigger him but are instead just supposed to run into him through a series of values I forget how to change, though I tripped one of his encounters. I hope whatever he does in the sequel's next parts touch on that, as that was easily one of the highlights of the game for me. In case it weren't obvious by me posting here in the first place I love that kind of mysterious atmosphere and the wiki-reading based off code-digging was probably the most constantly enjoyable part of the game for me. Which, you know, is also a downside due to not being really there in the game proper but that added to the charm for me.

There's theories that even the reality was part of the dream (the dreams being dreams within a dream) as you can see the jellyfish flying around her corpse at the end, implying that this isn't actually real, so it might be that she actually just woke up after impact. We will probably never know.
