That's great and all but the majority of people who pirate VNs don't go on to buy ones they liked. Some people would make the argument that if they didn't pirate the games they wouldn't have played them ever so it isn't a lost sale but to me it's no coincidence that the decline of the industry coincides with it becoming easier to pirate the games. The decline of the industry has nothing to do with piracy. Look at what games do today. Look at what games did between 2000 and 2010.

Too many unspoken rules have been established. Almost nobody tries anything anymore. Everything is the "norm". Prices rise. Little effort is put into works. Gimmicks are created for marketing, while the works forget about them a few minutes in.
I've said this a bunch of times, but with all of this shit together, you will NOT find new people. That's the issue. Why the fuck would anyone try out buying a game for 10k yen, that isn't really doing anything special at all? The industry makes the few remaining fans too important and tries to cater to them way too much, to the point they forget that new people are actually important to stay alive.

When you put as little importance on the actual storytelling as the industry currently does, there's no future. Because the stories were ultimately what made the medium grow. It's harder today to impress, yes. But if you don't even bother trying, nothing is happening.
Now, a few devs do actually try. We'll see how this develops in the next years. The rest will probably just end up at nukige eventually, and then die.

It's obviously hard to stay in a medium where you need to put effort in, with the golden gacha moneytree sparkling alluringly in the distance, seemingly easy to reach. But we've come to the point where even gacha tend to fail if you don't put a lot of effort into it. That should help the VN medium to become a little more important again. Maybe. Maybe not. We'll see. I feel some devs/publishers want to be like Yuzusoft a little too much, but they are special. Can't have more than one Yuzusoft. Kinda like with Key.

In case anyone else is playing the Chaos;Head Noah pc port from the 360 release: I figured out how to access the other pages of tips. You need to press the "c" key on your keyboard.

Finished Daitoshokan + Shippo Days + the FD. Have to say I agree with past comments on this being one of the best "moege,” among the ones I’ve read.

While the story itself wasn't anything special, the writing was surprisingly good at some parts, mostly off the back of the protagonist Kakei's monologues and narration. It was interesting to see his detached and analytical personality come out in his actions/thinking and how he changes throughout the story. Shiomi Gakuen and its surrounding city was used well as a uni-like setting, and with how much effort went into it I was wanting to read more about the school and its inhabitants through the plot. The Toshobu was a nice solution to this, as it allows the plot to basically move the stage to anywhere it wants to through the different requests that come to the Toshobu from all over the school.

As for the cast, both the main and side characters were enjoyable to read about. I found the comedy scenes pretty funny, and the everyday life between the cast didn't ever feel boring. I liked how they showed the Toshobu going from acquaintances to a true group of friends and the way personal relationships (e.g Kana-Senri) were written.

The individual routes were all OK in quality, the exception being Kana, which was the best. Each route focused on the problem of a single heroine, with ichaicha/ero delegated to the end of each route after it’s solved. The true routes are a continuation of the common route with more of a focus on Kodachi and Kakei. Again, Kana's true end scenes were the best.

The supernatural elements during the story felt for the most part like they were used naturally to tell the story and tied into Kakei's past and his growth as a character. The prevalent theme of changing as an individual and learning to trust others was written well, both through Kakei and the heroines. Although there wasn't anything plotwise that really wowed me, it was an enjoyable experience all the way through.

Favorite heroines were, in order, Kana, Sayumi, Sakuya, and Aoi after the FD. Kana's route(s) in general and all of her PoV scenes were the highlights of the games for me. It was pretty funny how in Senri's individual route that Kana got PoV scenes that carried the route while Senri herself didn't get any. Kana was basically the only heroine that could "keep up" with Kakei, making their 1-on-1 conversations and interactions an interesting back-and-forth rather than feeling like a one-sided therapy session like the other heroines.

Overall, the characters I liked the most were the "loners", being Kakei, Kana, Sayumi, and Takamine. I really liked the chemistry between Kana and Kakei as two people with similar interests, personalities, and problems and how they go about changing together to solve those problems.

Not much to say about Shippo Days, the heroines were cute and it fleshed out the setting of Shiomi Academy a bit.

The FD was nice, although a bit short. Made me more invested into and like the setting/cast even more. The Toshobu/Kakei extra story fills in the blank of the summer that was skipped over before the "true" routes in the main game, and it actually had a nice length with both good comedy/sol and plot parts. Sayumi's after is also good, actually has a story about her growth similar to Kakei and goes a bit into her past with Maho. Aoi's route was decent, she was cute. Tsugumi's after wasn't that interesting other than the parts that felt like another Aoi route, with her slowly coming to fit in with the Toshobu members. Kana's after story was, unsurprisingly, the best, and I liked how it focused on and delved further into Kana and Kakei's relationship rather than outside drama and was a bit more serious than any of the other stories. Obviously would have liked it to have been longer, the fact that Tsugumi's after story felt longer was disappointing.

Anyways, if that was too long to read: play the game for Kana. I'm going to miss her.
