I re-read phase 1 recently, and it's really not that bad. There are too many public bath chapters with too much walls of peace, and there isn't enough going on character-wise with Miyaos chivalric order while the conflict is escalating, but all of that is basically contained to a couple of chapters around the bloodmoon. Feels like Ryukishi just didn't know what to do with the characters while they were waiting for christmas, and after thinking about it for a bit I think I understand why.
The gauntletknights have a few hopeful moments that lead nowhere (the world peace summit), they make attempts at breaking the bounds of their roles as gamepieces that also go nowhere (Rethabile contacting her brother, Chloe offering Miyao her help if he wants to become Big Boss), they avert a few minor crises while facing increasingly difficult challenges, but they don't display any real agency anywhere along the way to their inevitable doom.
Which is the point, obviously, but because they're oblivious to their own inconsequentiality there's no room for internal conflict, like there was in Higurashi, so there's not much potential for a story there. What should Ryukishi have done to make the build up to the finale more interesting?

I think the bloodmoon chapters would have still been the weakest part even then. Ryukishi couldn't make the characters experience despair, paranoia, division within their own ranks to the extent he did in Higu and Umi because he wanted to have the DID christmas party finale. I guess he could have switched between Meow-Jayden romance bs and Miyao getting increasingly worried and depressed as events unfold until he's put on meds for the finale.

About Keith and his struggles, who exactly did Wayne end up with, the wandering dogs etc. Although, I would find it to be quite hard for Battler to successfully find out that the GDS was behind the assassination of his sister, since his mind was focused on Gabriel alone. He was pretty beat up mentally and I suspect the "coincidence" of Meijiu learning about it at the time would have flown over his head. I think it's the best episode because it's the grand finale and doesn't fuck anything up. Everything that was built up over the course of the story is resolved in a satisfying way. It also focuses on my favorite character and expands the WTC multiverse tremendously, introducing things like the city of books and the overlord cats.

I can tell you why I don't like Ep8. I can't in good faith accept the world Ange was shown or the decision she was intended to make in Ep8 on an emotional level. It's a pleasant dream, but at the end of the day love without truth isn't much better than a truth without love. Umineko gameboards take place in Higurashi-like fragments. But since they contain theories of what happened in Rokkenjima, the tales they tell could have happened in some parallel universe out there. They are possible scenarios, no matter how ludicrous. It just happens that Tohya's forgeries are the ones made "real, observed worlds" out of the infinite sea of possibilities, thanks to Beato's gameboard. There is the possibility of Ange being buttraped in some parallel universe, but no witch has ever made that world real or experienced it, so it effectively doesn't exist as a world. It hasn't been experienced by anyone yet.

I like the idea of there being a hidden layer beyond the official truth, just like the cheese riddle in Ep6 had a higher-level, superior solution. Also, I think Will would've broken the game if he used his authority to bring them together. That chess analogy at the time was pretty disturbing. He would've caused a logic error and get trapped in hell. After all, the theatergoing power Bern gave him was part of the gamemaster's authority. Motivated reasoning is one hell of a drug. For people who only just figured out that Shannon=Kanon in the love duel, and who were still in denial about it to a certain extent, seeing blank-eyed Shannon was the confirmation of that theory. For all my issues with the PS3 version and the voice acting in general, it is cool that we get to hear Yasu's unique voice a couple of times in EP5, whenever Shannon and Kanon talk at the same time when they are about to close a door or something. It's a weird ass voice very fitting for an eunuch. And it's also a clue to the fact that Yasu is playing a single character the entire time in that episode. I adore how great Hinamizawa looks there, so big, green, peaceful, the sense of scale is much better in this new one. The colors also make the whole anime much more lively, they're so vibrant and the contrast is big, the original was too washed out for my taste, so I'l give this one a plus.
I'm also in love with this particular shot from the trailer, it's so good.

Also, what we've got so far as the soundtrack goes, it's amazing I think. God, I'm so hyped.
