Need help. Trying to resize 最果てのイマ to full screen or a bigger window size. When full screen all it does is maintain it's resolution and fills the rest of the screen black.

Is Windows 7 still the best OS when it comes to overall VN compatibility? I fear that when I upgrade to 10, anything older than 2006 is not going to work.

Most of the real trouble makers don't really work on 7 either. 10 will be less compatible though, mostly because of cracks, different security (you can deactivate windows defender and all, but you know..) and whatnot.

Recently I tried to install Mashiro Iro Symphony, but it didn't even want to install, because of some weird "master disc not inserted" error. That might be another problem with 10: The old Daemon Tools isn't working anymore, and what you use instead might just make more issues. (In my case wincdemu)
There WAS an install crack, hinting at that this might've been always a thing, but literally everything was giving massive warnings about that thing even today (and not even heuristic warnings), so running that on 10 wasn't something I wanted to test. There's a Psp version and they seem to make a new version based on that for PC anyway.

Most older games should be a lot more fine, when they don't have weird copy protection though. The worst offenders will always be copy protection. That's the first thing breaking. The games with problems are in the minority and from very special engines.

Not that anon, but I prefer VNs that have no ero, or have ero as a big part in them. When I play something like an Astronauts game, I don't have to worry about ero killing the plot. It's usually way too integrated into everything, for that to happen. Likewise all-ages works, because there's no ero to begin with.

The problem is, that a lot of eroge simply act as if they put priority on the characters, story or whatever, but then everything gets rushed and destroyed by ero. That's annoying, and you can't really know about that before you play it. It also doesn't happen in all works. There are works where the ero is a clear secondary thing that happens when it doesn't hurt much of anything. (i.e. Daito, at the very end of the routes, when basically everything else is dealt with)

I recommend something short like Konata yori Kanata Made or Real Imouto ga Iru Ooizumi-kun no Baai. I think they're about 10 hours. The most important thing for a beginner is to read as much as possible. If you try reading 25+ hour games you'll get burned out easily and give up.

I'm still amazed how they managed to make a good game like Material Brave (gameplay, not story), and then fuck it up completely in Ignition. Oh and did I say counter? That's only sometimes true. Many attacks actually can't be countered. Instead hitting the enemy after the complete attack is done would lead to a counter. I usually go for the best girl first, unless I am 100% sure I play more than one route and it won't affect my later enjoyment by much.
Your first playthrough is always special, as you don't skip through large parts of common and so on. As such, the first route is always the most complete experience. It's actually pretty rare that I can be sure about that and I go with the idea "if the best girl can't win me over, nothing else will either".

That all obviously assumes there's no route enforcement, which however would make the question nonsense anyway. That said, best girl first makes it a much bigger risk to not bother with the rest of the routes. I don't see a big problem with that though. Better one really good experience than a bunch of mediocre shit and dragging down the good part later on top of it. (due to skipped common)

I just finished reading Choko's route in SukiMa and I have really mixed feelings about it, on one hand Choko herself is great but the drama was fairly unenjoyable. Delayed confession, temporary breakup, 2 year separation and massive end time skip. It's all some of the shittiest stuff you see, the best part of the drama was the way it baited her having some debilitating illness not just once but twice , was actually funny.

Good energetic girls are rare and hard to come by and I think she was definitely one of the greatest even though the drama lets the route down. Had a great time overall. What were your thoughts on sukima? What are the other routes like?

This is the only route written by Watanabe, so the other routes can't really be compared. That said, I'm currently at choco myself as well, and it's probably going to be the only one I'll read, simply because the rest of the cast is... unimpressive to say the least.

I actually read this for the other writer, as I liked what they did with Yoru and Asa in Konosora, mostly the rather grounded drama that actually can be believed for once, but they already went and made the entire base of the sister's drama completely unbelievable, that it seems to just have been a coincidence that one time. Or they figured they'd need to do "better" when they were responsible as a main writer this time. I dunno. Doesn't make me very interested into the other routes.

If you have a recent enough gpu, you can use integer scaling as a default "real fullscreen" thing. Useless if the VN in question doesn't have that though.

As for gamepads, I only know how the DS4 works, and that needs a very specific bluetooth dongle to work. Or, in other words, only some work. DS3 is the exact same, just that you need to completely reprogram the bluetooth to ONLY work with the DS3, on top of only a few models being supported. (which sucks)

That game was not good. One of the first two route was standard stuff that's good for a total beginner, but not even particularly well done. From the beginning to the end, 100% predictable. The main girl's route was pretty bad. The routes written by other people than the main writer were even worse to downright offensive.

That game didn't have a whole lot going for it. But I guess that's what nostalgia does for some. Never worked for me though.

out of those three I've only read Kudan. It was very short and didn't have good enough build up on the characters and the main mystery. It starts with two stories which are mostly solved by Kudan doing huge leaps of logic. It's not satisfying at all and both feel like a waste of time since all they establish is that every girl in the game wants to fuck the protagonist (too bad it's all ages yuri). Then you have the two heroine routes which are rushed because the game wasted time on those previous stories that don't add anything to the characters or the plot. Finally you unlock the true ending which again feels way too short and everything is solved without much effort, not to mention that every single mystery in the game is a Scooby Doo case where you don't have enough characters for suspects and it's easy to just guess who did it. Best thing about this game is that every movie they namedrop is real and I had fun with that found footage horror about the possessed grandma.

Sometimes I wonder if the people constantly complaining here should move on to playing Otome games. A lot of their content and themes fall right up to their alley.
