Hard to say. It's a lot of scattered small areas. Go to a big city like Sendai and you'll see them (In Starbucks, and McDonalds, no joke), but yeah, there's a lot of Eikaiwa teachers and the lot.

Wow you got on to JET, I hear its really competitive. Did you major in English? I'd really love to do JET, but I doubt they would take an engineering grad.

Nope, History. Read the news for a while and keep abreast of the current issues/large strokes of society. Go to the interview with an energetic and positive attitude and talk about wanting to see Japan and tell other about your country and be a positive ambassador. You'd get in I imagine.

I studied a bit in university, about 100 kanji level. I studied on my own for the most part, and just drilled kanji (still do) using a math note to practice writing each 20 times or so./ JET gives you study books, and I supplemented those with others. Just a lot of time and commitment to it. I've never used any software.

I'm also shameless and ask anyone any question. My teachers got used to it and started actually trying to help me study.

I worked in places ranging from a University residence to a tire factory to a class center, and I always got made fun of for working hard and caring about my work, even when it was stupid, annoying grunt work. I was raised believing in hard work and a work ethic and trying to work well with others and it was a detriment to my ability to get along at work. In Japan I get a lot of praise (which I deflect, remember to always do that) for being willing to do my job well even if it means overtime (unpaid) and a lot of stress.

tl;dr, I get the concept of intrinsic happiness, like just being happy for no reason because a lot of stupid shit doesn't eat away at me here. I'm quite a bit happier here and I notice the difference.

That's good to hear, concerning your first point. In my time there, I've tried -- not necessarily of my own volition -- to dispel presuppositions about foreigners (and Americans in particular) by trying to provide a positive counterexample. If you're doing a good job of that, then I commend you.

(Oh, and a study tip: while sort of obvious, reading literature/academic journals etc. is a good way of expanding vocabulary. A lot of people tend to shy away from "real books" when learning a foreign language, especially if it's one like Japanese where looking up unfamiliar terms can be time-consuming. Also, reading aloud to oneself is good practice. Sorry for the unsolicited advice!)

Remember 'Obon degozaimasu (Good Evening/Kombanwa) and 'N'da(ya ne)' (Agreement, etc). Don't use it at work/to superiors, save it for when you're at a drinking party.

>>2348425
Most ALTs have little experience in the formal sense, so volunteer to help ESL students at your school, etc to help.

I sorta do both: I save it to spend on paying down student loans. Almost finished, and I saved myself almost $10,000 on interest. I've still between all over the country though, and I have a nice TV. -How much do you pay for internet?

I pay about $40 a month for a fiber-optic line. Fastest internet I've ever used in my life (probably because Japan has the fastest internet connections in the world).

=I wanna study abroad someday in my life, any suggested places?

I suggest the Kansai area. Kobe is nice and centrally located.

-Do you see weeaboos make asses of themselves in public?

Most white people I see are other young English teachers such as myself and don't like to be associated with otaku culture. Plus there are a lot of people here from England/New Zealand/Australia, so you don't get as much as the nerdy American otaku thing here. There are plenty of foreigners who make asses of themselves, but usually in other ways.

-What other jobs are out there for us foreigners?

English teaching is the best money for the hours unless you are 1 kyu or so (above native level Japanese), then you can break into some other fields. I have a friends who are translators, college teachers, and importer/exporters.

-If I cosplayed as the Scout from TF2 and went to Comiket, would they love it?

Hey guys I live in Japan too, never bothered to take any Japanese tests or classes beyond the very basic stuff I took a long time ago back when I lived in the US, but I'm fluent just from having lived here for a long time. My job isn't related to English or being foreign and I don't have any friends who speak English, so the only time I ever really use English is on 4chan and when I talk to friends back in the US on Skype and whatnot.

Not that I have anything to say, just thought I'd throw myself up for question answering since I'm kinda bored right now.

I last went home in December 2007. I don't get language fatigue, not that I notice.

Keigo I only use when speaking to the brass at the BoE or school, and even then I relax in some situations because it makes people you speak to a lot unnerved when you never relax even a little bit. I also use it for comedic effect, as suddenly going from your typical speech to stiff, formal, unaccented Japanese always kills.

Basic manners like opening/holding a door, pulling a chair out, helping with a coat (and shows here) will be mind-blowingly impressive. There's a perception that foreign guys are more romantic and if you stick to this simple stuff, it'll help you with that.

Some people are still shy about public affection, but it's not so much with younger people. If you're dating early-to-mid twenties, be prepared fro some women who wanted to get married NAO.

At work it's quite frowned upon, at least as a teacher/civil servant. Hence the need for extra stealth. Having to go to school at night because of an earthquake and still having another teacher notice you came in the same car with a female teacher=fission mailed.

Pretty much, there's a lot of the same, except people won't really talk about things they have unless they just got them and want help with something because they don't want to brag. For example, a teacher a school casually mention he got a new laptop, but the darned thing couldn't do_______. It was a lead-in to asking for help.

Cell phone use while driving is illegal, and you get your ass fined.

Any society has annoying morons, but Japan seems to have less of them. Imagine if everyone around you caught a bad case of manners and acted like a person.

Not the OP, but I can answer this one. Get a international license, it saves you a ton of money and works just as well. Its what my dual citizen host over there did. No you don't have to prove you can drive on the other side before they let you drive. I drove all summer and didn't get shit from the Popo expect for letting people stand in my truck bed. Its scary the first few seconds for very first time when you see the lights coming at you from the other side, your brain goes this ain't right!? and your first right hand turn but you get used to it pretty fast. If your driving a stick its on the opposite side which I hardly noticed though.

There is no such thing as an international license, only an official translation of your home country's drivers license. It's only valid in Japan for one year from your date of entry, after which you have to convert it to a Japanese license. It also requires that you have a valid drivers license in your home country. There's a table on one of the Japanese government websites (I can't remember which one) that shows which foreign licenses and ratings translate to what in the Japanese system.

All of the "international drivers licenses" you see advertised online are fakes. They might fool bumpkin cops in the middle of nowhere, but they're not legal and you could get yourself in deep shit for using one.
