If AKB48 had even a semblance of mainstream popularity, or even at least moreso than H!P does, at least those two units would have outsold 2 of H!P's current lowest-selling artists. Neither H!P (anymore) nor AKB48 are popular amongst non-wotas, nor will they ever be. That title is sadly only held by Perfume.

Popularity arguments get absolutely nowhere with female idols. There are way too many different factors and selling points to compare them down to single sales. I don't care to read all those long posts but it's important to note that AKB is more of an idol group than MM and only attempts to appeal to wotas. That's not necessarily a bad thing, especially for them considering that they were created to be an idol group. Tsunku didn't mean for MM to be an "idol" group with a wota following per se, but AKB was created for that exact reason.
