I've been seriously attempting Danmaku Jigoku recently, and it feels like I'm getting a little closer to capturing it (I've had 5 attempts make it halfway through the final phase in my past 100 or so attempts) but it's really intimidating to think about ever getting consistent enough to capture it in a real run.

Is there any possible advice that could make it less overwhelming, or is it just a matter of 'you're either a good enough player to dodge it or you aren't?' I'm pretty confident I can become a good enough player to capture it if I keep trying, but I also can't help but feel like I'm somehow approaching it incorrectly.

Haven't played in years, but I'm looking to start playing again. Should I work my way up the difficulty levels like I was before, or should I just grow a pair and dive straight into Lunatic? Don't straight up into Lunatic, You're just gonna feel pathetic and drop the games again. Start at normal and slowly grind your way up, that way you'll get used to most spells/patterns/techs while also enjoying the great soundtrack and the characters.

First of all if you're not using any of the practice patches to skip straight to P3, you should, it saves you a lot of time between each attempt.
Other than that though there's not too much advice to give I don't think because it really comes down to your reading ability, but definitely avoid bottomhugging too much because being able to dodge downwards is really useful.
For what it's worth I like to take my glasses off, get fairly close to the monitor and just stare at the bottom quarter of the screen while I do it.

Thank you! I'll try using the assist patch, I totally forgot that existed.

I feel like my method more or less makes sense, but the main issue I'm having is how fatiguing the spellcard is to practice... I can only attempt it so many times before it feels impossible to maintain the level of focus it takes to even make it halfway through the third phase.

Also, that seems really bad for your eyes!

This is actually the first Touhou game I've seriously played on Lunatic so I wasn't really sure how long to expect it to take. My guess when I started was that it would take 2 years...

That's a tough question... There are a lot of sections of the game that I love, but I think I have to pick the second half of stage 5. Something about the way the energy of the music matches the energy of the stage makes me really emotional every time I make it there in a real run. It's like the game is telling me "you've come this far, just make it a little farther!" (My favourite song is 380,000 Kilometer Voyage if it wasn't obvious)

I love Lunatic Kingdom a lot so I'd like to keep playing it, but I also feel like it might be more productive to play another game for a while then return to it with a fresh perspective to avoid getting burned out. I took a break from Lunatic to NN the Extra stage after my kuso clear and it felt like the experience made me a much better player by the time I returned to start attempting LNB, so maybe I'll do something similar now. Maybe attempt one of the easier LNNs, or UFO LNBNV?

I'm feeling disoriented, sometimes it looks like I'm stuck and have no options to recover from a dead end. I am familiar with streaming, I use it in the first part of stage 2 and in stage 4, but cards like momiji's or aya's (every single one of them) look like traps without exit to me. interesting... might vary based on setup.
got curious and tested mof by recording with thinput at 640x480 windowed. the game registered a movement keypress either on the same frame or one frame before thinput registered it. without vpatch, frame before was slightly more common; with vpatch, same frame was slightly more common. so it seems like vpatch either didn't affect input delay or added half a frame. not conclusive since the input delay to thinput could be a variable (which could explain why one-frame taps sometimes registered and sometimes didn't), and i guess there's no telling how other oses, hardware, etc could affect things. but at least on my setup there wasn't a significant difference between vpatch and no vpatch.

People have said this is the case ever since it existed. Especially with regards to the first trilogy.

>>23178787
You're thinking about this wrong. The visuals on thinput can have slight delay, and they are tied to the in-game memory; it doesn't read your keyboard. It won't measure input lag at all because if the input can be seen in game memory it's already occurring and is obviously after the lag.

(Also if you're using v1 you should use v2, some of those issues might improve.)

The difference between shot types is negligible for a eosd normal 1cc. If you practice enough you can reasonably beat it with any of them, and if you're not there yet no shot type will magically help you beat it. An extra hour of practice will do you much more good than asking what the best shot type is at this low a level. Just pick your favorite and go.

I get this as well, although not nearly as extreme as you do. When I grind a game, I tend to eventually lose focus on the easy/routine parts, and my performance decreases.
Just use your bombs and don't let it get to you: the less time you spend in stage 1-3, the better.
Also, make sure to sleep well, and accept the fact that you sometimes have bad days.
Where are you dying, specifically? If you start to respect the attacks that kill you, that could also improve your performance.

No. They gathered feedback for what to change if there is another world cup, but someone else would have to organize it next year, since the organizer this year (Crestedpeak9?) has military service.
I hope someone will organize it, though. It should be a bit less effort to do it a second time, since the format is known by now. There are two language barriers to cross, but I'd assume there are at least a few Japanese and Chinese players with good enough English to coordinate a schedule and setup a stream.

Friends, i keep getting an error when trying to run EoSD's vpatch.exe. It's the mojibake of a dll Injection failing I think, but the readme says it's because there's mojibake in the path, which I've checked, and it is not the case because it still gives me the same error when I move the game folder to my external hard drive, and the game runs with the retardedly high FPS. I don't remember what exactly causes that issue but things that have fixed issues for me are making sure that the .exe is named properly.
If you're using an English patch the, .exe has to be named “Œ•ûg–‚½.exe or if you're using the Japanese version it has to be named 東方紅魔郷.exe.
Additionally if you're running the Jap version you need to either use "LANG=ja_JP.UTF-8 wine vpatch" to launch it if you're running through wine (though this is a good idea even if you're using the English version) or in Windows run it with the Japanese locale, I don't remember how exactly to do it in 7 so look that up yourself but in 8 or 10 you need https://pooi(dot)moe/Locale-Emulator/

I've started playing PCB for my first Lunatic these few days. I thought it would be smooth, since I've cleared it on Hard before, but it hasn't been smooth at all! I'm having an unusually hard time, dying frequently at Letty's last spell, Chen in general and Alice. The patters feel too fast, dense and overlapping, causing me to feel quite lost. i think it's normal to feel that way when you start on a higher difficulty. if you're missing something, it's that you're going to have to spend time in practice or watching replays to find more reliable ways through attacks (and stages). certain things that you can just wing on easier difficulties become too dangerous on lunatic, at least when you're first starting. you shouldn't be dying on letty's final, for instance, outside of the rare derp.

The only objective way to look at Extra is to look at the resource system and the number of different attacks. That basically means EoSD becomes the hardest, which I'm sure many people here, including myself, would disagree with. There are too many other factors to consider, like the order everyone played the games and the overall skill level.

As someone who's pretty experienced with the games, all of the bosses have a few easy spells and nothing really sticks out as hard except for a few attacks like Mokou's rings of death and Hecatia's moons. And I started playing the games with IN Extra, so Mokou is the hardest Extra boss in the series, despite me seeing a ton of people call her easy as fuck?

It's mostly personal opinion. Take those comments with a grain of salt.

I think clear condition is also worth considering when thinking about comparing difficulty. For example, Ten Desires Extra has pretty easy patterns overall in my opinion, but your amount of permitted misses is very low, so a player who relies on resources to clear might have a very different perception of its difficulty compared to a player trying to NN.

That example is definitely true.
I don't agree with the original anon though; for instance, Suwako and Ran are pretty obviously easy, while Koishi and Nue are pretty obviously hard, so while an exact ranking of difficulty is impossible, you'd have to be a madman to think that they're all the same.
It would be interesting to collect some hard data on this, by polling players for a numerical ranking of all Extras in order of difficulty, but I doubt such a thing is feasible, especially here.

There are a lot of attacks where you need to think ahead, don't be afraid to look in front of your character to see whats going on and to aggressively move forward to avoid trap spots. You probably had to think this way to get through Youmu in 7 so it shouldn't be too bad. Also yeah bomb a lot. Pretty much everybody bombs at least once at Momoji, that part's a bitch

IMO it's Marisa with Autumn. You might need to practice with autumn, you have to be pretty aggressive to get enough leaves collected, but once you nail it it makes a lot of the last two stages trivial. If you do it right you can get a new release charged up immediately, so you can just chain it and sweep the map. For instance, those yellow pellets at the end of stage 5 and last boss's kunai nonspells get totally deleted by this, even on normal

Usually I would avoid thcrap like the plague, but turns out it not everything on it are shitty meme mods.
There's one that recreates EoSD in UFO and it's pretty interesting, just having the PoC by default makes stage 1 a non issue, but I wonder if the creator ported hp values 1:1, even Reimu and MarisaB kill stuff pretty quick. Murasa also has new patterns for Sanae's "Patchouli", some I've never seen before, maybe they're borrowed from StB?
It's a WIP though, stage 5 only has the midboss and half of Sakuya's fight (after The World it's just Shou's normal fight) and the game just ends with stage 6's Nueball after Sakuya's nonspell, there's not even Eternal Meek

Mainly what makes me say that is that I've had my ass kicked horribly compared to other Extras, but if you want to get precise about it, I suppose it's the ratio of how difficult the danmaku is to how many resources you get. This also applies to the easy examples.
Ran/Yukari and Suwako have a lot of theatrical spell cards that look intimidating but don't actually require very precise dodging once you know how to do them, and their stages are fast-paced but leave a decent amount of wiggle room. Yet they shower you with bombs and lives (not to mention borders), and the bombs are actually good in those games. I almost did a no-miss clear of Yukari without even trying once.
On the other hand, Koishi's stage requires constant precision not only to not die, but to even get to max power before the boss; if you slip up once, both are pretty much out the window. It's very stingy on resources, and the bombs are mostly not very effective anyway. Plus even the midboss attacks are fucking brutal. Probably nine out of ten of my attempts at that stage end without even seeing Koishi.
Nue's stage I haven't played as much, but it's got a lot of sideways bullets and shit, and you have to go out of your way routing UFOs on top of dodging an already-difficult stage. Although if you're doing NNs then maybe it's not so bad.

Gotta practice, stage 4 of PCB gets pretty real. You can try easy mode too if the last stages of normal just feel like beating your head against a wall. Some people get snobby about that but you have more fun and learn faster by doing moderately challenging things successfully than by dying over and over on something that's overwhelming.

Later games also have the feature, which is a straight improvement imo, of letting you practice any stage you've reached, not just the ones you've beaten. So you might find it smoother to git gud at games that offer this, like 16 or 17

The DLL injection error will always happen if you have mojibake in the path or folder name, but it will also happen if you have japanese in the path or folder name AND do not use a japanese locale. This would have been the case if your EoSD folder's name was 東方紅魔郷, for example.

EoSD also creates config files automatically if they don't exist yet, and if you fuck up it can make a corrupted one, which can also introduce problems.

yes it speeds up (but apparently steam touhou doesn't, you have to pirate it)

install an ultra patch on a game with spell practice, find some spells which don't get too dense but are still almost impossible to clear, then torture yourself with them for a while, your dodging skills will improve

Do you think the photogames also would work for this? They definitely have the "spell practice" feel to them.

>> No.23319103

>>23319093
sure but on ultra they range from "hey this is surprisingly fun" to "what the fuck"
playing them normally helps as well

also the jump from normal and lunatic is pretty large, not sure if you really want to do it right away

I was thinking of just playing them normally; they are already difficult enough at the higher levels.

yeah it's fine, just make yourself have trouble

My favorite game is DDC, you earn bombs and lives by PoCing which is really fun and satisfying. It’s one of the harder games (not lolk hard but still pretty difficult) unless you learn routes though, so if you want an easier time MoF would be a good choice. It gives you a lot of resources so there’s plenty of room for mistakes.

Finally, I did it! My first Lunatic 1cc. I'm so excited! Lost 2 lives to stages 2 and 3, but managed to get the 800点 life, which pretty much saved me.

Marisa's shot in IN is fucking with me. Its acceleration makes me think I've got input lag or something.

>> No.23353989

>>23352963
You might, if you don't have vpatch. Input lag is more noticable on faster characters.

Nah I do have vpatch, and I don't get that feeling when I stop firing. I think it's just in my head. I hope.
