now that i have 2500 anime cards and have been doing them for ~5 months i think i have a good enough basis to determine their usefulness for myself.

the card creation and learning process makes remembering new cards a lot easier. with normal vocab cards i'd have to rep new cards 2-4 times while with anime cards i ~75% of them stick on the first rep.

in terms of retention rate, the rate for young cards is probably a bit higher than my old mining deck. however both this and what i mentioned above about it being easier to remember new cards could also be attributed to the fact that i know more words/kanji now than when i was doing my mining deck so it probably makes it easier as well in that regard.

my mature retention rate is fucking ass. ive resigned myself to the fact that im incapable of doing more than 75%. i think this is probably due to a mix of my own cognitive limitations and the fact that i only get 2-3 hours of input per day and probably mine words that i wont be seeing very often. i havent found anime cards to have improved my mature retention rate at all.

listening to audio for failed cards is tedious. it fucks my flow up when im reviewing so i just custom study forgotten cards later and knock it out in one go. i never experienced that "it makes reviews more fun bro" shit myself.

at the end of the day im not sure if i should have bothered with this shit. i'm thinking of making a normal 1 click vocab card deck to do on the side to see if my stats will be any worse once i get some mature cards in it but i probably wont out of laziness.

I made the first post, so it was a funny realization that my post led to a reply that changed this guy's life, then we coincidentally met years later and stuff. I think this kind of thing is pretty cool so if that poster is still around I would like him to know the impact his post had. But like I said, I don't really expect that. vndb by its nature buries a lot of untranslated stuff*, and there are a lot of less popular vns which aren't tagged at all or are barely tagged so the search feature isn't terribly useful for finding untranslated vns.

*ratings are weighted based on popularity. the more popular, the less the weighting applies. untranslated vns with only a few dozen votes (vs. the several thousand for popular translated vns) have their ratings absolutely trashed by the weighting system and come up as 5s and 6s of out 10 even if they might have an actual rating of >8.

Im starting Essential Grammar in Tae Kim and have like 500 words learn from the 2k/6k, I know in the grand scheme of things its very very tiny, but can someone put a percentage on it? Is it at least 5% to be able to read moderately? in terms of memorizing vocabulary from frequency lists, the benefits very quickly get hit by the law of diminishing returns. the most common 1000 words in the language represent around 75% of all words in any given piece of media, but the next most common 1000 words only account for an additional 10% coverage on top of that. to make another 10% jump you need to learn an extra 4000 words. from 6k to 10k you're only going up by about 1% for every 1000 new words you learn. once you hit ~17k you have to almost double your vocabulary (to ~30k, which is more or less native level) to get another 1% boost to your coverage and at long last be at pretty much 100% coverage.

after 1k words (or even before then arguably), you're best to just jump into native media and tough it out while making your own mining deck. trying to read and listen for the first time will suck no matter how much preparation you do and 1k is about the sweet spot where you will get a good boost without having to spend literally months just grinding vocab in anki every day (all the while not learning any japanese because you aren't inputting).
