First of, we've pretty much agreed that perspective is way off here.

Secondly, Kaguya and Mokou fight a lot, but they both have a great relationship.

Thirdly, the number of humans in the lobby appears severely limited. The fanon has just ruined the Alice and Medicine situation over the years.

Touhou is all about MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction.) I can nuke you into oblivion, and vice versa. So let's be friends and have a tea party! Hooray!

To be fair, thankfully ZUN is not also the artist. So I figure how it works is that he writes the story, let's Aki know how he wants it to look and she draws her view of the scene.

The hate between them is mainly one-sided. Mokou hates Kaguya for what she did to her dad. Kaguya pretty much could care less and just fights with Mokou for lack of anything better to do. I also think they basically set aside time each day to do this.

I get the artist and probably even ZUN wanted a chance to get everyone into that picture and just went along with adding any old character for the look of it, but still, it amuses me a little.

Medicine is known for attacking human and youkai alike. She just especially dislikes humans due to her ideas about dolls being slaves, which is why it's more amusing she's standing next to Alice who uses her dolls are bombs from time to time, not that she'd necessarily know this and Alice does love her dolls. As I remember it, she's written up as attacking anyone that approaches her flower field on the nameless hill. So it's just amusing to think they invited her to a party and that she'd be able to have a nice talk with Alice, who has all the reason to be interest in Medicine.

Yuka is Yuka, she can probably be relaxed from time to time so whatever. Others may keep away from her entirely because it gets a little tiring hearing about how she's so bad ass.

Oddly, Yuka is probably more stable then Flandre when surrounded by a lot of youkai she could potentially 'play' with. Yuka's may be a couple flowers short of a flower bed, but she can be civil between bouts of insanity. Flandre is locked up in the basement for a reason, she's extremely excitable.

Can't remember if Reimu proposed them, or Yukari. Either way, they can't utterly defeat Reimu because she's essential to the existence of Gensokyo and she has a power which I think makes her invincible for a time, previous Youkai exterminators probably actually killed the Youkai (or were themselves killed) now everyone agrees to a duelling system probably to avoid being killed by Reimu at some point or another.

That said, with the dialogue in some of the games, you get the impression they really are trying to kill one another. So yeah, you could choose not to use the spell card system, but you'd better be sure you won't lose.

Actually. The whole point of the Spell Card System is for the benefit of Gensokyo and the youkai who live there.

Apparently when youkai use their abilities/powers to the fullest there is a danger of Gensokyo falling apart. But if they don't use their abilities/powers then they become weaker.

So with the Spell Card rules they can use their powers without worrying if Gensokyo will go BOOM or not. This is also why part of the rules is that youkai can easily create incidents and humans can easily solve them. Youkai are also forbidden from eating any humans they defeat in danmaku. In addition to that no one dies and it limits any collateral damage.
