Let's start with the actual game. This is Astronauts Sirius only card game, but the same gameplay is used in a title by another Astronauts brand, 塔の下のエクセルキトゥス, and while I won't be doing a big post about that game right now I will say it's better than Verethragna in almost every way. The card games rules are simplistic and obviously inspired by Yu-Gi-Oh (more on that later), you have enemy life points and spell cards and trap cards and shit. The main point here is that the game system is very, very unbalanced and it's extremely easy to break. I made a post about this earlier but I made an uber cheese team that let me beat almost the entire game at half of my enemies levels effortlessly. The gameplay is so imbalanced that you don't even need to level your cards to beat most of the game. And on top of that the gameplay is fucking SLOW. Incredibly slow, even the map movement in dungeons is slow as shit, I was playing the whole game on 5 or 10x speed with cheatengine. I'd have lost my mind otherwise. So the gameplay is broken, it's not fun, it's tedious, it's repetitive, and it's mandatory. It's not like Astronauts Sirius are a brand that stand out in terms of gameplay, but the only other Astronauts game that had gameplay I hated going through this much was Guildmaster and that was because I had to deal with the possibility of a random crash with every encounter. In an earlier post I had a fat bitch about my cheesing strategy failing, but I resolved that problem by just coming up with a different cheesing strategy, and my former one still beat every single post game boss so it was more I just ran into it's hard counter than anything.

This could potentially all be overlooked if the story and characters were good. Like I said before, Exercitus is much better and I had fun playing it even though it uses the same gameplay system (with some tweaks). Unfortunately for Verethragna, the story and characters are not good. The setting is not the shared fantasy setting that most of the other Sirius games use, it's a brand new one that as far as I can tell is just Yu-Gi-Oh. Now I didn't watch or read Yu-Gi-Oh but the setting is a 3d battle card game created by mysterious occultist CEO has taken the world by storm, but it's not really a card game and the cards are magic and connected to another world where they are all real, and the main character discovers the truth while on a quest to avenge his parental figures humiliation in a duel, which as far as I know all happens in Yu-Gi-Oh. I vastly preferred their fantasy setting to this one, even if their fantasy setting pales in comparison to Eushullys or Alicesofts.

The main character is fucking awful. He's an unlikeable asshole who acts like the top alpha dog, until the game needs to throw in a gangbang scene, so they make him just stand there and masturbate while guys run a train on one of his women. His sole positive quality is supposed to be his dedication to a card game, which doesn't do much to endear him to me. The heroines aren't much better, they hate the MC until he fucks them and then they are in love with his dick and talking about how he's the greatest and kindest person ever because he takes a card game seriously, with no escalation between these two states. None of the heroines stood out to me as a good character and none of them have interesting subplots.

The actual plot of the game isn't even worth commenting on because it's half a game. When the final credits roll, two of the antagonists are just lurking somewhere in the school, one of the heroines is a secret spy, one of the heroines has been kidnapped, four (4) new characters are introduced in the epilogue, and the final scene is the main cast leaving on a fucking training mission in preparation for their next battle. Almost nothing has been concluded, almost nothing has been revealed, I guess Sirius were so confident that they could get a sequel to Verethragna out, and fairly soon, that they basically released half a game. Verethragna came out 5 years and 6 Sirius titles ago and there has been no sequel, no game in the same setting, and I haven't heard anything about one being made.

So to conclude, Verethragna is not fun to play, all the characters are unlikeable and you don't care about them, and at the end of the game none of the plot is tied up. The only reason I'm not struggling to decide what's worse, this or Guildmaster, is because at least Verethragna didn't crash on me every 30 fucking seconds. Oh and on top of all of that, the ero is shit. Very little scene variety and all girls act the same. And this is coming from someone who likes M&M.

I would not recommend this game to anyone.

Jinki - the first manga where Aoba is the main character and Ryouhei (the protagonist of Resurrection) is her love interest. It never finishes properly.
Jinki Extend - sequel with a timeskip that turns the story into a harem with Ryohei as the protagonist. Aoba is missing and this manga also never finishes properly.
Jinki Extend Relation - manga that takes place after another timeskip. This time the protagonist is a kid with amnesia that's supposed to be the brother of Akao (main girl of the Extend manga). It stops publishing after only 4 volumes this time.
Jinki Shinsetsu - manga that combines all the volumes of the original and Extend that you need to have read before the first VN. It has an extra volume called Final Episode that gives a conclusion to the original manga.
Jinki Extend Re:Vision - the first VN that rewrites the early volumes of the Extend manga, adding a protagonist with amnesia (of course) and turning Ryouhei into his mentor. It's kinda rushed because it has 6 heroines and none of the romance feels satisfying. But there's lots of ero and lots of hotblooded robot fights so it's worth if you want that. Resurrection is definitely not following that since Ryouhei is the one that all the girls are lusting after and the other guy never existed.

Closest I have found is the Onii-chan series by Galette/Tinkle Position where all the girls being ふくらみかけ is a selling point, and some games by CUBE/CUFFS that have a mostly small breasted cast like Garden or Your Diary but they aren't truly flat or have a token cowtits.

Giga itself is a good example of this as well. They don't really know what to do anymore, so they try all kinds of random things and see what works. This is just another one, together with a completely pointless remake of Koitate.

Though there may be other stuff as well, f.ex. I remember one game also adding an underscore _ to the name of its exe file which simply had to be removed in addition to hex editing it.

In any case, if you decide to give DMM your shekels then make sure you have all your purchases downloaded in case they later decide that they hate your money. Currently working my way through 散りゆく者への子守唄. Enjoyable, though not quite as much as I'd hoped.

Story is pretty slow at points, with fun characters frequently being marred by the presence of one-dimensional antagonists and some kind of shoddy writing here and there -- but the worldbuilding is nice enough. The SRPG segments are cool as a device to keep the reader engaged, but the difficulty level of even the "hard mode" is trifling to the point of comedy, so I'm frequently wondering why the game component exists at all.

I played the pc version of the first one back in 2011 or 2012 and I remember not liking it all that much. Especially with the introduction of the scifi shit towards the end. I don't remember too much about it though other than the general plot and that the epilogue was very good.
Overall, I liked the sequels more, but they should not have been split into separate games because 2 on its own is definitely not complete. If it weren't for that, I'd say 2 was the best because of how it handled balancing the different aspects of the setting. 3 was pretty fun, but I felt like the overall scenario could have used way better planning. Playing Clannad and it's actually like stepping into a strange kind of portal to a universe where school life VNs are good. I know an excess of choices is seen as tedious in today's market, but I think I'm convinced now that they add a lot to immersion, especially when the choices change so much - it feels less like marching through a common route to get to a route and more like doing your own shit with the world changing as a result. To be specific about what I'm talking about here, the things that happen because of your choices change future scenes dynamically for a lot of variety. So maybe you do a joke choice, and then a day later it's called back to - it wasn't just forgotten after the joke is over, it was an actual event that happened and is remembered by the characters.

There's also a clear amount of effort put into the 演出, which is something that I've started thinking about more often lately. Stuff like Tomoyo's chain combo kick on Suzuhara is actually reflected in game and there's even little "COMBO CHAIN" effects etc to sell it. It's nothing mind-blowing or anything but it really strikes me just how many VNs simply stone cold do not give a fuck about adding these touches, and are content to just plop up the sprites at equidistant locations and occasionally throw up a CG.

Also, Clannad is actually funny as fuck. I'm busting my gut with laughter at the jokes in here. Maeda's actually a solid writer and does a good job at being funny while progressing the game along. I've decided not to use the word "pacing" so much when referring to VNs, so instead I will say that Maeda keeps individual scenes brief and is always fast to get to the point. It keeps things moving along at basically a lightning pace, despite what you would expect from Clannad perhaps (note: still in common route).

There's also a quality to the characters that I feel like I've noticed before, but have never really put into words. I don't want to say realism, but like... It's like a sort of depth, where they have stuff going on in the inside, and what you're seeing is just what they're putting out there. Modern moege as it were has the opposite of this, where characters are nothing beyond their appearance and just put everything out there at once. Maybe it could be described as the faith that the character is an actual character and not just an otaku cumsleeve moeblob, as it were. Pic related, you won't see a moe blob casually talking about getting BFs unless they're in the fake-gyaru-slut archetype.

tl;dr Clannad seems pretty good, excited to dive into a route soon.

Don't know how it is in Clannad, but Little Buster's choice are awful. It's nice to have a lot, but if you only get a route if you get all the choices for a girl "right", and it's usually the most boring choices out of the stuff available as well, may as well not have any. The idea is the difference between a writer being able to write a character freely, and a writer being forced to confine themselves to moeblob conventions and archetypes to please moebuta. Moeblobs don't "not care about getting into a relationship before meeting MC" because the writer has a complex character image for them with depth, but due to writer having to write that to not make moebuta mad. The result is flat and two dimensional characters. The point isn't that a girl has to be interested in getting a BF to be interesting due to my own personal tastes, but rather that it's a reflection of the writer being able to write freely with depth rather than adhering to flat archetypes.
