You gain much more from learning the Kana, doing the first 300 Kanji off either a JLPT list or by school grade (school grade takes you up to 3rd grade for 440 iirc), doing the 2k/6k deck, stopping anytime you want after passing 2k, reading TKim, and then moving onto JLPT textbooks + mining off of TV and stuff.

there is no point in memorizing anything that does not directly help with reading of listening to Japanese if you are a beginner. it's a time trap. memorizing kanji only helps with learning does, not reading itself. it's counter intuitive but have a little faith in your brain, you don't need to break everything down into well organized groups, it doesn't actually help.

Which is gonna inhibit your ability to actually improve your listening ability. So,it's extremely dangerous and you can't undo this kind of stuff. Once you learn to understand everything 100% but your listening abilities aren't fully developed, I don't know what you can do about that. So at the beginning, even if you don't worry about the danger and you just think about it as a neutral thing - if you're watching with subs, that's reading practice mostly.

Well, if it comes down to just “understanding the meaning” my sorry N3 lvl ass can understand like 80% of the stuff I come across, especially since context helps fill in the gaps. I might not know the specifics due to gaps in vocabulary, but I can watch an episode of Jojo for example with or without Jsubs, and understand about 80%. It’s only when I focus myself on fully understanding the nuance of a sentence that I feel myself improve. Sitting down and just watching videos like that really doesn’t seem like the most productive use of my time, especially when I’m surrounded by Japanese at work and I get that passive acquisition 8 hours a day every day. Should I just mine for specific words then, and throw down a contextual sample sentence?
