>> No.23088811

I was reading older and older novels and I'd make a ton of anki cards and my vocabulary was getting crazy big. And eventually I started studying classical Japanese and I studied more Japanese history. I had this idea in my head that I wanted to 100% master Japanese. Like 100%. Since Japanese comes from classical Japanese, it evolved over time, and in order to really understand it 100% I'd have to understand all of classical Japanese to understand exactly how it evolved. And I'd also have to study Japanese history because they were so interconnected. And I was even planning on studying Chinese for the sake of Japanese because Japanese is so influenced by Chinese and they used to write in classical Chinese in Japan. So I was gonna learn Mandarin and then I was going to learn classical Chinese in Mandarin so I could complete the Japanese language, like 100% complete it.

In addition to that I was learning obscure words and had all this obscure knowledge on the etymology of words and so it got to the point where I was correcting my Japanese friends' speech all the time because they'd use a word wrong or sometimes they'd ask a random question like "how come we say blah blah blah, like how did this word come to mean this?" and I'd know the answer and they'd be like "WTF?" And my favorite thing that happened was that they'd try to test me. Especially this is what would happen when someone is starting to get to know me. Because Japanese people have this idea that Gaijin suck - which is true because most Gaijin do suck. But they'd use a word and then they'd correct themselves. They'd use a kind of difficult or rare word and then they'd rephrase it in an easier way assuming I wouldn't understand it. And I'd be like dude I understand that first word and they'd be like "What? How much do you understand?" And I'd just say it "Dude I probably know more words than you. I probably read more kanji than you." Then they'd test me and they'd bring up the hardest kanji they could think of and I'd read it all. And I wasn't very good at writing kanji by hand. But when you say "I can write any kanji" they'd either ask you to write 薔薇 or 檸檬. And I'd do that. And they'd be like "wow he can write any kanji" so that's what I was talking about when I said I mastered making people think I'm better than I am. That's one aspect of that.

What debate with Matt? I argued that learning 3000 up front was too much given the time to learn the most common 500 kanji (used 75% of the time) took same amount of time as the least common 500 kanji (used 0.7% of the time). Later Matt changed up the recommendation of doing 3000 kanji (production) to instead be 1000 most common kanji as recognition (lazy kanji). The idea being learn the less common kanji as they come up in words.

I remembered Quiz cause I supported his patreon till he decided to turn his page into a joke. Dude's probably better than me in Japanese, so take his advice serious. Problem is he's so insufferable you just ignore him. If he worked on that personality problem, he might actually help a lot of people learn Japanese better.
