The thing I like about Gil is that he's the only guy to tie ANY of the games together.

This is the guy who when pushed into a corner, spontaneously grows an extra pair of arms.
When getting trapped in the void by Exdeath (who is a brand of awesome unto himself) he proceeds to punch out the Necrophobe, later causing it to become Necron the Final Final Boss from FF9.
He then spends the next two games chilling in the void, which is sort of like chilling in an universe of pure anti-matter.
Then Seifer kills Odin and tears a hole in reality, Gil notices, catches Odin's sword and pops down asking (in the JAP version) if that's Butz causing trouble again.

He then pops up again as a hidden boss in FF12.

I don't think it's the same one, for a start, Enkidu in FF9 is a person not a dog. That said the appearance of the Necrophobe from FF5 and Necron from FF9 are pretty damn similar, and there are bits that sort of look like the Void dungeon from 5 in 9 as well, so it's a bit confusing.

Honestly there's so little in it that I'd put them round about as good as each other, FF5 has more grindan, FF6 has more story, so depending on where your tastes lie detirmines which one you like better.
