It's possible that vocaloid producers and fans enjoy something right in the frontier before the uncanny valley since it gives them a better margin to experiment on sounds that are less human-like without sounding too uncomfortable. With Luka you can only really aim for a realistic singing (which does great in songs like luka luka night fever and leia)

CFM excuse for leaving V5 is that Yamaha was pushing too much into realism and they just wanted V2 but better (which might be what saves Luka).

The problem is that all the competition kept improving. Luka V2 definitely sounded in many ways an improvement over Miku and the Kagamine twins when she launched in 2009, she was pretty much the nicer sounding vocaloid then and I could even sort of mistake some of her songs for some real singer instead of some high pitched robot. But Miku V4x, Una, Gumi V4, Hime and Mikoto all sound more natural, and even when you need something deeper sounding you can go for their appends.

Luka's final chance now is if CFM manages to make the NT engine competitive with Vocaloid and they manage to do a modern V2 Luka.

Being exceptional but with a limited range is fine for a singer who will have 100-200 songs, but when she starts getting into the thousands like the average second tier vocaloid it can get stale. Vocaloid characters being cartoon characters make them much more approachable for everything but singing. Drawing them, making music videos, 3D models, games. If they look like normal people (like the S1M0NE movie) you'd need hollywood level CG to animate, and you have almost no flexibility in her design compared to all the fan Miku versions.

Vocaloid is perfect for the indie base as it is. Generally speaking, and solely from memory because I'm lazy:
-F is the most "basic" in mechanics. Has a solid setlist. Featured some side activities centered around decorating a room for the Vocaloids. I think it had a robust editor, but can't remember.
-F 2nd had some quality-of-life changes from F. Setlist (imo) is a little less consistent in quality, but generally solid enough. Retained the DIVA room stuff. Editor is very robust and has a lot of custom content floating about online.
-X has really refined mechanics, and the quality of the setlist is terrific. The setlist is short, however, and the game introduced a lot of new side stuff with mixed results (a "story," modules are gachas, all PVs are stage performances).

Personally I like X the best solely because I think the setlist is so amazing, but it's prolly the one I'd recommend the least. I'd go with F 2nd.

I've heard a few possibly conflicting reasons:

Yamaha wants Vocaloid to go away from anime style singers and more into realistic singers, which conflicts with the current public (for example it automatically adds breathing to emulate a real person instead of being opt in).

I've heard it improves other languages but the japanese has basically not changed much, so there is no point for japan.

I've heard they changed the licensing and it's now very unfriendly to voicebank creators.

I've heard that for example Crypton experimented making a Miku prototype but they were not able to make her sound like the original. It also drops support for Vocaloid 2 (which Crypton still sells), and some other features like the Cross-Synthesis and the VocaListener, making it not objectively better than V4. It would also require Crypton to update their Piapro Studio anyway.

I've also heard that Yamaha downsized the Vocaloid team, so the voicebank producers may not see much future with the tech (especially now that there are actual competion with sinsy, synthv, cevio, crypton's in-house NT)

Even with bad licensing, if V5 was a large improvement then at least one of the main companies would make the move to get the technological edge (even if they get less for voicebank sold - and in worst scenario every music licensed - they would get marketshare for the associated products like merch in general). And popularity for everyone who is unlucky enough to be on the "not Miku" team is based more on design than anything else. Concert tickets (plus merch on site and accessories like the glow sticks), all kind of licensed merch (figures, plushies, posters, music CDs that mention the characters - if you use just the voicebank you don't have to pay anything and doujin stuff like at comiket is considered non-commercial use), licensing of the characters for all the video games, commercials (like that water commercial for the olympics this year, plus all sort of regional events like snow miku), support software (through their sonicwire store, which include the piapro studio and all sort of music related plugins), they own their own music label for vocaloid producers (piapro). And they are also creating their own synth tech which will allow them to take yamaha's share.

It's not like they are really rich since vocaloid is moderately niche, but they did get a lot more profit from Miku for over a decade now that they probably ever hoped when they were hired by Yamaha. I definitely don't like it (although if it's opt in then it's fine). Vocaloids by themselves are average singers at best, but what they can uniquely do is being able to perfectly sing any score with machine precision and no regards to the human physiology.
