The anime is a good introduction to Marimite.

After reading the first novel, I went back and re-watched the corresponding episodes in the anime and was surprised at how much DEEN had cut out. Events seemed to make a lot less sense once I knew what was missing. However, I would like to stress that somehow the anime managed to convey the spirit of the novels and the characters (imho), despite all the cuts. While I think I will enjoy the writing in the novels far better, and that they give me a much clearer picture of each character, I do not think that the anime is 'inaccurate'.

Plus the anime has a stellar cast, and Yumi's facial expressions!

Regarding whether Marimite itself is good or not: that's a matter of taste. I loved it for many reasons.
It's about young women who think about something other than boys and popularity.
It's about personalities that click together like pieces of a puzzle.
It's about the importance of communication.
It's about being accepted as part of a group that you feel at home in.
It's about tea, and keigo, and walking slowly, and learning to be just a little bit more mature than you were when you first met the Yamayurikai.

So it's less about whether it is 'good', and more about whether its strengths appeal to you or not.
