The Big Bad of the show is a child of Yog-Sothoth (think Wilbur Whateley) who is attempting to bring the Outer Gods to our reality. Al and Esmerelda are the human avatar of ancient spellbooks of the Mythos (Al is Al Azif and Esmerelda is the Pnakotic Manuscripts). A recurring antagonist is the mad scientist Dr. West, etc.

At least in the earlier version of the translation this was present. I'm not sure if it all remained in the current beta, as it's basically a port of the PS2 script (which is far superior in many ways to the PC script), with choices to be able to open the PC scripts too (mostly for ero, and a few different scenes). There's no ero in the PS2 scripts of course.

I hate to be the one to break it to you, but the Mythos was made by a big circle of fanfic writers. Some of the Mythos stories are interesting, and some aren't. So don't be disappointed offended if Demonbane isn't exactly like the writings of Lovecraft, Smith, Campbell, etc. Check it out for yourself and make up your own mind whether or not you like it.

It's still good. Well, the anime actually, haven't played the game yet. And even then, it's the last episode that was good. When the intense violin bgm started playing and they did some totally cheesy but awesome moves as they readied demonbane to strike at the true villian.
