Has anyone played this game? It's utterly baffling to me. It's supposed to be this really hot NTR game but it keeps going on and on about the characters, of all things, giving them strong personalities and motivations, weaknesses and insecurities, with absolutely zero hints about there any NTR business at all. Usually you'll end up getting the 'phone call' sort of shit, the 'moans in the background', but I've been playing this for a while and it honestly feels like I'm playing a normal eroge.

I don't hate it for this, because I think what it does is pretty unique and a breath of fresh air compared to what you see in the world of commercial eroge. How often is it that you see male side characters crushing on heroines, for one? I feel like that's something that would not fly at all in a commercial eroge, but if its doujin NTR game, things are fine. I honestly have zero clue how the NTR is going to be worked into the story at all, but I'm just going along for the ride.

Finished Flyable Heart and kiminago. Flyable Heart was decent overall I'd say, one good route with Mayuri, one decent route with Yui while the rest I'd say were bad/boring. The overall mystery was fairly fun and made all the routes just that bit more interesting.

kiminago was pretty great I feel like saying but after like 5 or so days of reading non stop noble family drama I feel like my interest started to wane ever so slightly towards the end. In any case though it was definitely quality stuff, everything was nicely done I'd say.

I don't think I could stomach another story like that anytime soon though. Going to have to find something more lighthearted to read next now that I'm done with Flyable Heart.

I feel exactly the opposite. Can't speak for the game in question, but I really like it when a moege protagonist tries to get a girlfriend, even better if he actually puts in some effort of his own to make someone fall for him. Unlike the other anon, I specifically liked Fureraba for that, but also the first Lovely x Cation where the protagonist is an asocial loner who improves himself in his attempts to get a girlfriend. Or MagiCha. Point in these games being that there's something proactive happening on the protagonist's part. Making Lovers was advertised somewhat similarly to Fureraba, and while the protagonist does do something other than just sit around, I still feel a bit cheated that pretty much all heroines end up meeting the protagonist by pure luck, and one of them even has a crush on him right from the word go. I don't think wanting to find a partner is particularly "sleazy", unless the guy decides to go on about it in a negative manner.

Way, way too many moege go to the other extreme where the protagonist is just a generic nice guy and a total normie with no flaws, often no real good character traits either that'd realistically make him desirable. Apart from maybe being a donkan because we absolutely need to stretch a drama-free romance plot even further, and it's often by pure chance or some other bullshit by which he ends up falling in love with girl A, B or C. Perhaps after days of the route being about something completely else. Hell, maybe he'll even have heroines fight over for him, or have one of them gracefully leave the stage when another heroine appears who "can make him more happy than I do". I personally feel it's much worse kind of artificial and forced wish fulfillment: as long as you're a semi-nice guy, then fate itself will ensure that beauties will automatically flock to your cock - usually delivered with a pseudo-harem common route where the protagonist is surrounded by girls in daily life - so take your pick you lucky lad. Not only is it completely unrelatable, it's just not very interesting to read.

There's no way that money is necessary for voice acting. Even if you pay premium, it shouldn't be more than a few million. (still a lot of course)
Assuming Majikoi has about 30 hours of voice acting (your average VN tends to have a round 15), that'd be recording sessions of maybe 2-4 weeks for your own stuff. (can be obviously longer, if the voice actors have other things to do at specific days, but you don't pay for that)

There are very few good yuri games.

-Flowers 1 is mostly nice. There's one thing that I really didn't like, but apparently that gets better in the sequels.
-Seisai no Resonance: Mostly the true route, though you shouldn't play it first. Probably at least.
-Tsui Yuri is short and also kinda okay.
-Ne no Kami. (doujin) Haven't read anymore yet, but it's nice. Mind you, the first of the two older ones. There are 4 in total by now.

I've not tried everything out there of course, but most yuri simply sucks. And I say that as someone who likes yuri. The entire genre has that problem, regardless of the medium. People still eat it up though, so nothing will change. The best bet is probably going with something that's not really that explicitly yuri, at which point you are better off with LN/Manga/Anime.

So, I finished Suzukuri Karin. And I can now say that if ever a game needed an append patch boy oh boy its this one

When the game was announced I thought to myself 'what the fuck, how and why is this happening' and ended up hoping that this was a seriously planned out srpg that baseson wants to start using to do new things since they finished up the SKM remakes. What I got instead was a barren, boring and banal videogame.

Firstly, the gameplay. The gameplay revolves around you either getting a bad end or a heroine end, then NG+ing with all your levels and upgrades and getting a bit further each time. It's incredibly repetitive and nothing is ever added to spice it up. You defend the dungeon with auto traps and auto units until the enemies get strong enough that you can't, then you reset and grind more levels. Trap variation doesn't matter since you'll just end up taking the traps that increase your dungeon score the most, unit variation doesn't matter since the vast majority are worthless and you can just keep leveling the shitty ones until you win anyway. Upgrade system is extremely simple, you get one active skill per main character you recruit and they are all just click and watch the buff happen. It was fun for a time but when you reset and do the same maps again but slightly faster, then reset a second time and do the same maps again but slightly faster again, you get the idea. It's shit.

Next, the story. There isn't one. The synopsis of the game says Kazuto gets recruited by Karin to unseal her. That is the entire plot. Nothing else happens, and when you unseal her she is like 'thanks bruv now back to doing fuck all in the labyrinth' and you get her heroine ending. I cannot stress how devoid of content the story is. Renfa gets added in as the hero to fight the demon king, but she doesn't. She just gets optional heroine events, the exact same as everyone else. Massive disappointment on the story side.

On the character side, I actually like many of the characterisations more than their main game versions, which makes it all the more disappointing how empty the game is. Karin is much, much better and acts like a reasonable human being, Shunran is less obnoxious, Shuuran actually has a standalone character, Kazuto is less of a faceless self insert, it's great. They do have every heroine go dere for Kazuto within about an hours worth of actual reading, which while standard in an eroge feels weird in this one since Keifa and Shunran never go dere in the main series and that's over a decade and 7 50+ hour VNs. It's OOC in both good and bad ways. The only two characters who are actually new, Shippo and Midari, don't have enough content to deserve being characters in their own right. Like 5 short scenes each, including their 2 h-scenes, introduction and epilogue, and zero appearances outside of their own scenes.

The game doesn't tease a sequel or a tie in with the main series. The shitty gameplay can't be fixed but the utter lack of content could be fixed if they released some appends for it, which I haven't heard any news of. From what I've seen on forums the nips didn't receive this very well either, so either they will try push out an append early or they will just abandon the game. Considering Baseson just finished a major rehash of Koihime games and this is a brand new setting, even if it shares characters, it's very disappointing how little effort was put into the game. I can't recommend it even if you are a big Koihimefag like I am.

No, they are simply not distinctive enough and not particularly attractive. I feel nothing when I look at them. I've seen them in 50 different games already. It's pretty bad in this case too, because there are only 3 heroines so you should make them stand out more. They all have the same face, expression, hair lengths, and 2 have the same body type. They didn't bring back Iizuki Tasuku who's already been proven as their best artist, but brought back Oryou, an alright artist that releases like 5 games a year who's art isn't that great. Quite a few Japanese games ended up being simultaneously released before that became a thing for VNs. Or at least so early, there's no way they didn't start the localization while the game was still in development. I've never connected that to any western pandering. Atelier for example sure doesn't do that.
Meanwhile you look at the Persona series, and those games are getting western releases quite a bit later. Yet the influence is much easier to see.

When a game gets released in English has nothing to do with if there are western influences or not. You are just paranoid. Not like western influences would even be necessarily bad. That might bring not sucking choices back to visual novels. Also more attempts at actually telling a story that's not featuring a high school. Now that'd be something.
You don't always have to think about the worst cases. There's good and bad when it comes to the Japanese scene, and the same when it comes to the western scene. Ignore the bad, take the good. Combine. Get something great. Not every case is a zero escape 3, where the dev's prejudices about what the western scene wants (and that's where the developing money came from in this case) ended up making the game way worse than it needed to be. Better communication with their money giver and whatnot might've prevented that already. Though it's not like it's rocket science. Zero Escape 1+2 were popular as they are. If people wouldn't want to read and needed videos for everything, that'd have never happened.

/jp/ being really brief here, when did the JOP shit really start to gain traction? I've been out of the VN game for awhile, last VN I played was muramasa in 2012, so I got a switch and got summer pockets gifted to me, and in the middle of asking some stuff about it, I got some pretty salty replies my way alluding to a "JOP vs EOP" schism that at least back in 2012-2013 wasn't as widespread as it seems to be today.

I mean I wouldn't see that shit outside some particular subcultures, now apparently became popular enough to show itself even in more mainstream pools of discussion.

I think the split exists because the /vg/ thread is for translated games only, but people will often annoyingly post about untranslated games there. And then a few years ago, there were some annoying people who kept memeing translated games in this thread, so eventually the thread title was changed to "untranslated VN general" to directly force translated game discussion out of this thread. Also there are trolls who fan the flames. Hence the "schism". Still, sad to think that somehow people who read VNs in Japanese can no longer discuss most of the greatest VNs here, but that's just how things went.
