i know this might sound like something all of you have heard before, but i've noticed i can keep up with the dialogue really well if i'm watching something extremely easy that's got lots of short, simple lines like precure, whereas if i try reading a vn, i'll often have to read a line, look some words up, read the same line again, try to interpret what it means in context, and then move onto the next line.
