I think it's because she was the one of the few non-high-pitched female Vocaloid at the time. If you go listen to Iroha Soft, Meika Mikoto, and then original Gumi, the difference is like light and day.
I don't think they aged that badly, though. I just went back and listened to a couple and liked them. The ones where she's pitched way up (yankee boy yankee girl) are way worse.

I'd rather listen to Corey Feldman's Angelic 2 the core over his music any day.

I've heard both 独白 and 白紙 and my god, they were both awful.
カンザキイオリ's music lacks any real talent. The style is so cookie cutter, uninspired, and fails to express any definite songwriting very well. The songs all feel incredibly predictable and repetitive. I'm not exactly sure what the lyrics are, but I absolutely do not care to read the lyrics whatsoever. I have a haunch that his songwriting either lacks a clear focus on his imagination or is rather elementary level of songwriting like...Ed Sheeran/Chainsmokers level of songwriting. It's as if カンザキイオリ wants us to imagine us standing in front of him, hearing him talk about how he found himself in the most lovestruck situation in the most awkward way.

A part of me feels that his fame is undeserved and that his fans should be ashamed of appreciating such garbage. just thinking about this producer's music gives me a headache.

there's still way too many Miku songs being made compared to others. I really like some songs with say miku dark append or when she has some unique well done tuning but it's mostly all so samey. There's a bunch of really good voicebanks released now but variety still feels about the same as the first few years of vocaloid, arguably it's way worse now since people actually have good pool of voicebanks to pick from, not 3-4 like years ago and they still tunnel vision of miku, even some producers who were known for using other vocaloids in the past now just do Miku

I'm just curious but has anyone ever saw or tried sampling vocaloid's singing phrase and playing them live? I'm asking because I don't have any money yet to buy a decent keyboard which can at least do simple sampling but I'm just surprised why I never saw someone do this before

My original intent is basically to sample a lot of generic singing phrases of vocaloids (aaaa, whistles, dumdumdum, and all those gibberish words) in different frequencies respective with the notes being played in your keyboard while playing them live. I think it's a fun idea which definitely can give any musicians a fun way in live improvisations/performances while also giving possibilities for improvised live performances in official concerts with the backstage dancer playing the improvised dance and the keyboard player playing the improvised singing lines using keyboard

I don't think the instruments are terribly nonstandard, you have guitars and electric piano, what makes it sound jazzy is the arrangement and chords. Music theory might help you.

I gotta say, I don't dislike Miku or anything, but she's definitely not my favorite. As far as looks and voice go, she'd probably be middle of the pack for me. And I do tend to get a bit salty inside with how much more famous Miku is than the others, and I've seen similar feelings expressed in the past in these threads (not sure how common it is).

However, at the end of the day, Miku doesn't "steal away" the spotlight from anyone else - there simply wouldn't be a spotlight if it wasn't for Miku.

Rather than hogging popularity, Miku can basically keep Vocaloid alive by herself forever at this point, and I think any fan would recognize that, which is why basically nobody has any actual hate for her. So basically, the people who love Miku love Miku, and there's no one hating Miku in response, unlike what you'd expect.

You’re right that comparing her to an instrument is a little unfair, but (as far as I’m aware) Vocaloid was originally meant as a tool and why some voicebanks (VY1, VY2) don’t have official characters. Now that there are characters obviously it’s more than just a tool (though you can argue that iconic guitar models are more than just tools, too). I’ve been surprised at the number of Miku fans who really don’t seem to care about the music, but maybe I shouldn’t be. Miku isn’t my favorite also (probably number 4 or 5) but I do appreciate that she’s the most popular, and I really do like a lot of music that uses her. It’s possible to lament Miku’s popularity or wish other loids could be more popular without disliking her. This is something that always bugs me so much. Remember in early days when all Vocaloid story pvs/series all used the characters themselves? It's hard to dissociate the voice from its respective characters, which is why this OC stuff never worked for me.

whether or not an artist, Miku, or a vocaloid producer is indie or mainstream has no real relevancy. it really doesn't matter. what matters is if there's passion behind the work on the music. it's all on the intent of the artist regardless of any level of popularity.

If an artist and its music is put into the mainstream, it'll most likely be appreciated for it's popularity and not for the passion behind the work. But like all trends, that artist will eventually leave the mainstream and, when it does, the only people who will be left to appreciate the music then will be the hipsters. comparatively, the number of hipsters vs normies is a huge number. In Miku's case, a lot of the work involving her does get appreciated by the fans regardless of when it was made but only the most successful producers get to be archived. On the other hand, Miku is considered to be mainstream in Japan already. However, her success is so long-reaching that, even after leaving mainstream, she'll be regarded as an important figure for a long time due to the sheer amount of influence she has brought to the people in japan.

the thing about Vocaloid is that its roots are what cause it to stay rather "region-locked" or so to speak. Due to Miku's association to Japanese idol culture and her synthesized nature, most people in the west will just scoff and write her off being nonsensical without attempting to understand the appeal of vocaloid.

What people in the west don't realize is that Miku is very well capable of escaping the Japanese idol culture paradigm I.E. Keiichiro Shibuya's THE END.
However, majority of the vocaloid fans seem content on just appreciating Miku being a cute girl singing the most lowest common denominator music. In reality, Vocaloid is more focused on girls being cute rather than the music that can be made with the synthesized vocals. The vocaloid fans/producers just don't want to move on and not be innovative with the music, so nothing really happens and people in the west end up getting the wrong impression.

Hopefully that will change eventually.
