This typhoon really made quite a mess, i would say it is very lucky the death toll isn't much higher considering how many rural towns and villages are built in steep valleys right on the banks of rivers and streams.
Many people also underestimate the danger of mudslides that can come even a while after the storm itself has passed.

Yeah I was thinking "what kinda dummies build in a valley next to a river where a 4 meter wide wall is all that separates them from being inundated"
but then I remember the Japanese are the most tenacious people on Earth in the face of disasters, it's part of life. You build higher to avoid floods and then eat an earthquake for your effort.

I am not the tourist type, but when I was looking on google maps around my soon to be university and where other places are, I started noticing all the little shrines and temples. Even if I knew there are many, to actually see them on a map was kind of impactful. Some of them are literally between houses. Like, in a district of houses and randomly one of the courtyards doesn't have a house, but a shrine. Will definitely go explore all the close ones. Who knows, that might as well motivate me to go to others too. Yasukuni is just on a bit longer walk too. Probably the biggest one around, though I wouldn't known.

Yup. There's shrines for different purposes too. It's why red seal collecting became so big recently, people wanted to fill out books while also seeing the sights.
There was some negative views on that practice though. I think the staff of a particular one put out an article basically asking for decency - come there to pray, not to stand in lines and wait for your sticker then immediately get in your car and drive to the next one.

Something about how overwhelmed staff were with trying to keep up with lines of people that wanted their books stamped, instead of being available for more important things. I wish I bookmarked it, it was put out last year at the height of the trend.

Well, I am not so oblivious to not know that there are shrines for different gods and so different reasons to go to pray.
That said I would like to do quite the opposite. Probably hoping for too much from Shinjuku, but finding a quite place where I can pay my respect and then be alone and just sit or lie down is what I am hoping to do. So actually I want to find at least one where I can stand for a while, not just go and fuck off.

It's useless to try and understand or rationalize what the Chinese do to animals, all their good men were killed by communism and the remaining society are just identical drones with nothing we can relate to in regards to moral fabric. They're willing to kill eachother for nothing, so animals (being beneath that) are more disposable.
The Japanese zoos are just extremely cramped and unnatural. It'd be a lie to say they don't care about animals - obviously they have trainers that care and try to give the best service they can. But it's just too small, you need like 2 acres minimum for a bear to not feel like it's trapped.

>> No.22287337

yes the japanese in general have a more humane view of animal welfare. hopefully the standards can increase in both countries - in china as people get wealthier and more educated, zoo standards should improve - in japan, due to the declining population there should be more space in the future for enclosures

Lots of mountainous regions with nothing for 30km in each direction, it's the 'mountainous' part that is the problem. Perhaps I'm super naive on this and they DO have numerous wildlife enclosures in the rugged hills, either intended for conservation or as an attraction.

I was surprised at how the river wall looked to be mainly just dirt before, except for a low stone foundation at the base, no wonder it was easily weakened until it collapsed.
I thought the Japanese were experienced at things like this, even most small mountain villages seem to have well constructed stone walls where rivers are expected to rise and could erode the riverbank.
I am guessing whoever planned and constructed it is sweating pretty bad at the moment.

I was caught in that last night. Most of the night it was fine, people were just walking at normal pace. But for some reason there were these pockets of people shoving each other through. I couldn't even see the cause. The police were in front of us so I don't think it was the police. Maybe i twas just a few people that started a domino effect of people losing their balance. You can see there is a very define stream of people getting pushed; it was bizarre.

The scariest thing about driving in Japan is that most of the roads don't have any form of shoulder.
Whether it is cities, towns, villages, country or driving between rice fields, there's almost never a shoulder. And often there are ditches, foot deep drains, small concrete barriers protecting the footpath and even fucking power poles right near the edge of the lane.
If someone is intruding in your lane you've either got no where to go or you take a chance crashing into a drain or ditch/field because you're probably more likely to survive that than a head-on collision.

I used to live in an area like that, rural Saskatchewan though. Roads where as soon as the asphalt ends, you're on a 50 degree gradient or worse.
Then they never rip up roads, they just layer more tar on top of them so the edge gets steeper and steeper. One tire slips off the edge and you either roll your car or shred your underbody while stopping.

Are you playing it back with VLC when you get these? Don't.
Either convert it straight to webm, run it through editing software or preview it with some other media player.

If i look at what i have recorded in VLC it looks horrible as well, switching between slowmotion, screen tearing and skipping parts entirely, yet after converting it to webm VLC plays it just fine.

True, if it weren't for the fact that it is so far the only player i have come across that reliably plays (and records) everything from single fps MJPG IP cameras at high latency to 1080p youtube streams without breaking the recording every time the stream buffers i would probably have stopped using it long ago.
Either way, the Yunikami stream does seem to be a lot more finicky to get working reliably.

I think it may be a tad preemptive but I fixed that Instant Replay issue. My webcam being plugged in causes an infinite audio loop upon closing any media or application, as long as instant replay is turned on.
The issue persisted through a fresh reinstall of Windows (unrelated) as well as several driver upgrades/downgrades/reinstalls, and is apparently so obscure it yields no results when I try to search for what other people did to fix it.
So I unplug my webcam and it immediately goes away. What the fuck.

If there isn't a very obvious blinking light or something else drawing attention to it there really isn't anything about a camera that stands out, and someone that from the cameras point of view looks to be staring right at it could really just be reading a sign next to it without the camera even registering in their mind.

I know you are probably just being hypothetical or joking about it but if you were to be serious, just don't. Sometimes you get a fun reaction to it, sometimes they might even be friendly.
But then there are those that freak out completely.

More then once i have been accused of harassment because i contacted places that for some reason or other streamed unintentionally and people freaked out, or even worse once IT and security got involved they tried to make me out to be some sort of crazy stalker that had hacked their cameras just because they didn't want to admit they fucked up their configuration in the first place.
In the end all that came from it was a few amusing email exchanges with some pretty cool cops (and less cool Head of IT for the company) that seemed to understand this wasn't really worthy of investigation.

But, this being a youtube stream things aren't as legally grey as they were in those cases.
That said, if i can point my browser to something and get a live feed without authentication i do not count that as "hacking" that's publicly accessible in my eyes, regardless of if that is intentional or not.

Not sure what they are doing, just replacing windows or maybe filling in with insulation and sealing cracks?
The combination of temperature difference inside and out and moisture must make these types of bathhouse buildings problematic to work on.
Insulate too little and they will be freezing indoors in the winter, insulate and plug gaps too much and you get trapped moisture and probably mold everywhere.

Also rare to see the camera move this much, must be pretty windy.

My understanding is that the sprinklers are for the tracks, not for the train itself.

The problem was, the snow would accumulate near the tracks during times of heavy precipitation. Due to the properties of snow and speed of the train, the snow would kick up when the train passed and cause the gravel underneath to fly around. This would lead to damage to the train body. It had to operate at reduced speeds during times of heavy snow until the sprinkler system was implemented. The sprinkler system only works well in areas where it doesn't get too cold.

>> No.22478073

That is good to learn. I'm not sure where the real cold in Japan is, but I'd assume anything on the Sea of Japan coast and northern Tohuku/Hokkaido.

The Kyushu train cam! You can watch the sonic train go by which is indigenous TO Kyushu! This cam is located at Minami Fukuoka which is not far from Hakata, the busiest train station in all of kyushu so you get a fair bit of action, shame about the blurred outs bits though, I do like people watching.

Are you guys only for comfy static cams? Over the last few years I've built up a few Youtube playlists of various 前面展望/cabview videos from various uploaders of trains/buses/cars mostly in Japan. Alright, had a bit more extra time that I was expecting today. Here's two Youtube playlists. The first playlist is of all the JP vids I've watched, and is mostly actual train/tram front views, although there's a fair few side view videos in there also. There's also a good number of bus videos as well as some car videos too. And of course there's video of some of the weird shit they like to build in japan buried in there also.

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL0ACQ-6KbEazVa4zjt8g04YyvKd19WpSu

The second playlist is basically the same videos, but only those that are in 4K. It's about 1/3rd the size of the main playlist and completely omits some of the video producers who don't ever shoot in 4K.

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL0ACQ-6KbEaygaJzfO-8NV8esGZlvhaOO

I have about 600 more videos in my 'unwatched' list that'll slowly be added to these, and more as the producers upload them. Hopefully you guys enjoy the comfy autism as much as I do.

I also noticed a few non-Japanese routes slipped in, like this HK tram video, which are still really well made https://youtu.be/idfdQvscMNM?list=PL0ACQ-6KbEaygaJzfO-8NV8esGZlvhaOO

Oh they're a visual treat for certain, and that audio is dreamy. I wonder if there are any for the ultra scenic routes through the forests of Nagano and such, the ones I see on Tabi channel.

you were able to pull out 1 minute 20 seconds of dynamic scenery while I tried getting 15 seconds of 720p and it bloats past 4mb even at a (variable) bitrate of 1200

I usually don't do 720 just for that reason, but you would think 15 seconds shouldn't be such a problem.
480p seems to be the sweetspot for still being able to get somewhat decent details and still being able to push 1 minute+ without getting a artifact mess.
Also my clip is 15fps, good way to cheat a bit.
Bitrate is down in the low to mid 300s IIRC.

I love these Canon cameras, they seem to be everywhere in Japan and a very large number of them are just open to public view if you can find them.
Some of them will also display the stream without credentials if you just request directly to the MJPG stream url instead of going through the main camera page if you want to be a bit sneaky about it.
I am almost tempted to go look up what their default credentials are to see how many of the ones that aren't public are still viewable with the defaults.
But that would be illegal, probably.

I realized those numbers are almost a year old by now.
Todays numbers: 6359 worldwide, 3686 in Japan.
With the US as a distant second at less than half.

I usually am if i just want to browse random cameras, but Shodan has so much more options when it comes to filtering search results and doesn't moderate camera feeds.
With a tampermonkey script i modified to automatically pull up snapshots from a number of common IP camera brands right in the search results it functions almost like insecam for me, except on more ports and with a almost real time continuous feed of new IPs being added.

Anyone with a basic understanding of html headers and/or a demo unit or two to test against with some trial and error can find almost anything connected to the internet on a large number of common ports with Shodan.

Taking this from our sister thread on /n/
>JR East will sumbit an application to the Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism to officially end rail services on the sections of the Kesennuma and Ofunato Lines that were replaced by BRT services after the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake (tl:dr BRT will stay).

For sure, in fact i know about a few anons who got busted for doing shit like this, of one i am pretty sure went to federal prison in the US under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act.
Of course that guy was also a real asshole that liked to hijack internet connected babymonitors and scare the shit out of kids in the middle of the night over the two way audio system and at the same time was too retarded to 7proxy himself while doing so.

I am pretty sure i would have been busted sooner or later too if i hadn't avoided doing the more outright illegal stuff when these issues started to get recognized in the media.
I sometimes feel a little bad for producing guides that helped random anons do bad shit and/or get themselves in trouble.
But, i just wanted to watch comfy views across the world, what they decided to do with it will have to be on them in the end.

Enough of my "back in my day" nostalgia blogging, have some Yunokami.

It's appreciated content, regardless.
I kinda feel like I'm people watching when it comes to the public ones like the Osaka Tower shop camera, it's just people shopping and wandering around the performance stage.
