Been trying to figure out a route against Idol Creature with nofocus YoumuE. I realized there's always a nice gap in the first arrow volley aligned with Keiki's current position (because of the gap in the idols' formation to her sides), so I'm trying to exploit that. It's not as reliable as I'd like though ; the vertical variance still gets me, and I can't always kill the next idol falling towards me in time, even at 4.00 power.

the second half of that phase is rough for reimu/yuuka. you can get through it a lot of the time, but with so many swords i don't know about consistency. i certainly wasn't good/dedicated enough to get there.

reimu/yuuka speed is suffering in ms. i wish (at least) one of them had marisa speed, marisa had mima speed, and mima was faster. fast ship bias, but it'd also make scoring (in extra, at least) a little more consistent.

>> No.22356740

>>22356678
I dunno, kinda? Extends are based on score items count, and clearing the boss' patterns change every bullet still on the screen into a score item. You can exploit that, but I wouldn't call it farming. Actually, I'm curious, I've never heard of a way to farm extends on the other extras, can you tell more?

>> No.22356891

>>22356678
the other anon nailed it. still, you'll probably only get one point-based extend on a standard clear, and that one is basically automatic. two after solid routing and practice (and easiest with mima), but by that point you'll probably have cleared. three requires scoring strats, which you won't want to get into on a standard clear because it involves 1-3 bombs for score and very precise timing with ending certain boss phases.

I have just discovered the wonders of Marisa and her all powerful lasers.

I do have a couple questions though:
I get about 50% of the way through on normal and get absolutely destroyed. I’m trying to keep an eye on my character but my peripheral view keeps getting my attention. Is this just growing pains of gitting gud at shmups or am I playing it wrong?
I’m also using a controller instead of a mouse and keyboard as I’m having an easier time with the thumb stick than I am the directional keys. Will this end up hurting me later?

I guess my final question is where is the hitbox at? Seems like it’s right in the bow on Marisa’s back.

Unless you're making very tight dodges you should look ahead of your character so you have more time to react to everything.

>She just won't get hit with Cirno's slow patterns
That's not the problem, and your choice of character doesn't matter to the AI (unless there's something it actually isn't programmed to deal with, like Medicine's EX); it will always dodge perfectly, even superhumanly so, until a certain amount of time has passed.

In the main story mode, they'll get hit by random shit early on and lose their first 4.5 orbs, then dodge perfectly until a certain amount of time has passed, then purposely die. In other words, unlike playing against a human, you can't and shouldn't try to catch them in well-timed attacks or anything, it doesn't matter. You just need to focus on your own screen and stay alive.

>> No.22388115

>>22388033
there's a lot wrong with that. the ai is on a timer and will get hit at roughly certain times (not just on their last half orb). these times are set for each stage, with later stages having later times. also, the times for a given stage decrease after each death. the exception is first-round eiki, which doesn't have a timer. also, match mode functions the same way as first-round eiki, which is why i posted the ai mystia mirror.

while your advice to focus on yourself is generally good for survival, there are characters that can obliterate the ai (medicine, aya) and others that have a very good chance at hitting the ai (ex: reimu). you can, if you want, play to get as many ex attacks as possible (and, with reimu, also coordinate this with multiple l2s) to hit the ai before it's supposed to take a hit. this simply is far less reliable with most characters, so for most of the cast it's safer to simply play the long game. also, if you play for score, you'll find that the ai can get hit before it should by just about every character, and you'll know it because it'll fuck up your run.

You don't need "crazy" reflexes but you do need to be able to follow the lasers with your eyes and predict where the safe lanes will end up once it starts slowing down. When in doubt just don't move. Step-by-step guide to get EoSD working on Windows 10:
>>first: remember to have your locale for non-unicode programs set to Japanese
>>Get the game from here: https://www.myabandonware.com/game/the-embodiment-of-scarlet-devil-clp#download
>>This is a patched executable, it's permanently in English.
>>go to https://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Game_Tools_and_Modifications
>>get vpatch_th06_unicode.dll, put it in the game folder
>>rename th06e.exe to 東方紅魔郷.exe
>>download https://ux.getuploader.com/swmplv75e/download/4 and extract vpatch.exe and vpatch.ini into the game folder
>>launch vpatch.exe
>>It should work now.

>>If you want the hitbox patch, get http://www.mediafire.com/file/vive3tpn34n45qe/EoSD_focus-only_hitbox_patch.zip/file and extract it to the game folder. Note that if you apply the hitbox patch, the game will crash upon alt-tabbing back into it, so don't do that. Otherwise, there aren't any problems with it.

I got a problem on Subterranean Animism. I'm playing Reimu+Yukari and sometimes when I stop shooting, Reimu will keep shooting for 3 or 4 seconds, which is annoying because it stops me from teleporting to the other side of the screen. My keyboard is not at fault, and from what I've gathered, it only happens when I've been shooting for a long time without stopping. I don't see this problem mentioned anywhere on the internet

no. it only lasts for a few tenths of a second, it's always the same duration, it always happens, you can gap immediately after releasing shot (while post-release bullets are still being fired), and aya's speed is reliable because it always kicks in immediately after the last bullet is fired.

tested with thinput for giggles. aya speed starts on the 11th frame after the shot button is released. gapping works as long as the first tap is released once shot is released (tap can start while shot is still pressed). my quickest second tap was on the fifth frame with shot released, and it gapped. i doubt that there's a duration where the second tap won't gap, but if there is then it's four frames or less.

i was wrong about the shot duration always being the same and about aya speed being tied to the last shot (it's tied to button release; i'd dumbly assumed they'd be the same). usually, 3-4 shots will come out after shot is released, which makes sense if shots are supposed to persist for ten more frames since each shot takes three frames. but sometimes there are two or five shots. no idea why. this doesn't affect aya speed, though: speed still activated on the 11th frame even with an extra or missing shot. this explains why it could look like aya speed is unreliable, but if you go by feel then it's consistent.

Just played WBWC for the first time today. Although not the hardest game, to me, it's definitely the most infuriating one. The bullets are pretty much always the same color as the background, entering or leaving roaring mode changes the color of the background, picking the wolf means having an insanely big shot which hides the bullets coming at you, and spirit items appear every three seconds and make those annoying sounds which prevents you from concentrating, it's amazing how poorly designed the game is.

mof visual glitch/bug. don't know the cause. did a quick search (/jp/, wiki, web, yt) and couldn't find any info. it starts at least as early as the menus after the game is launched, and it ends when the game is exited and restarted. acted up the most when there were a lot of bullets onscreen or when a bomb was used, so maybe it's tied to sprite count. scroll lock periodically turned on by itself, but otherwise everything functioned normally.

only had it happen once before, so this time i figured i'd save a few images. they don't really do it justice, though, since the visual garbage was almost always flashing at inconsistent intervals, not static. i also didn't catch everything, like sometimes a given type of bullets flickering or completely vanishing. and there was probably more weirdness that i didn't notice over all the other craziness.

i'll dump a few images, and i'll leave the glitched game running for a day or two for possible further testing.

but if that's the problem, then that would explain why this issue has seemingly never been posted before. still, it's puzzling why this would occur so rarely: twice out of 500+, maybe 1000+ launches.

Hard games aren’t dying, but the shmup genre’s pretty much dead at this point. There’s still a moderately-sized fanbase that enjoys normie “hard” games like Dark Souls and Cuphead, but what other notable arcade-style shmups have been released recently? It feels like the only ones people care about nowadays are either Touhou, its fangames, or pre-SDOJ Cave, and everything else is glossed over.

>>22545630
LoLK was the game that brought me back into Touhou, personally. There’s a community for the game LoLK was based on, I Wanna Be The Guy, but for its fangames; I think there’s almost 10,000 of them at this point. There are also similar games like Celeste, Kaizo Mario romhacks, and Mario Maker that are doing relatively well.

I think most people just like seeing that they’re making progress in a game, no matter how little it is. You don’t get that feel of progression in the vast majority of these shmups. Rather than bit-by-bit progression, it’s more like you either clear it or you don’t.

You got it. With proper power management you can bomb every single spell and nonspell in the game and still make it out with a few extra lives left. It doesn't get easier than not needing to dodge anything on most boss patterns.
You can also do this with Reisen/Sanae in lunatic LoLK which is why some people also consider that to be among the easiest lunatics.

This kind of sentiment is what killed my motivation for scoring in these games, but fucking up in any stage of the game can also bite you in the ass and force a reset. No one really cares about a score that isn't at the very least top 3 worldwide and if you can't do at least the first 2 stages of the run close to perfectly, you might as well reset because the high scoring runs don't fuck them up. Then you have stage 6 bosses that are vital for your score, like Yuyuko and Keiki, where if you fuck up ever so slightly, then kiss your high score goodbye. You just wasted the past 30-35 minutes and all you feel is frustration. That's when the games and the grind to getting gud stop being fun to me.

Nowadays, close to nobody cares about high scores in general and I'm happy that most people stopped falling for that meme. I'm glad I'm not autistic enough to spend hours resetting stage 1 because I didn't milk a card for graze as much as I should've, or I missed a simple trick at the very beginning for an extra 100 graze, or I accidentally timed out a card while milking it for no bonuses. I can see how the few people left in the community still find it enjoyable, but fuck off, I have better uses for my time now.

>> No.22571340

>>22571274
MarisaB's bomb turns bullets into power items when they are not from a spell, this means you can usually get heart pieces easily per bomb, she barely has to dodge if you can get 35+ lives a run.
SakuyaA isn't as scummy but her knives make bosses bullets slower when they are stuck on them, pretty much downgrades the difficulty. Not only that but she deals a lot of damage with them, has a wide shot for stages and her shield bomb not only works propely as such but it can let you PoC twice which means either lives or bombs depending on how you doing it. She basically has no downsides outside of some stage sections on Lunatic.

>> No.22571347

>>22571274
>MarisaB
Her bomb converts (non spellcard) bullets to power items. PoC enough at once and you get a life fragment. Proper bomb use can give you well over 30 lives throughout the run. Works better on lunatic because there's more bullets.
>SakuyaA
Her knives slow enemies (including bosses) down slightly, making some patterns more forgiving (really only relevant if you play LNB though). Her bombs are also either half-price (3/8 to be exact, if you don't get hit again) or save you from a second mistake AND give you another free item collect.
