Except that unlike manga, where chapters are about 20 pages with a couple lines of dialogue each, Light Novels are 200+ pages of prose and dialogue.
There are very few Light Novels that get GOOD fan translations, given that the majority of them end up using machine translations with the bare minimum of "editing". While some readers (mostly ESLs) are perfectly happy to gobble up shitty MTL, there's a lot also willing to pay for something that's been put through a proper translation and editing process.

It's basically the same thing as Hoshi Ori except it starts in middle school and the MC has a bit more background and some hangups over his parents getting divorced when he was a kid. But the latter aspect doesn't seem to be getting utilized very much, at least as far as I've read into it, which is disappointing. Once you get past the initial romance resolution and the H-scene barrage begins, it gets pretty boring, but that's just my opinion.

The idea with the Shuffle deal is that Naval was chasing the 6 figure sales that Konosora did for Moenovel on Steam (and did so without an R18 version). They went through Active Gaming Media who had been running Moenovel, and priced it similarly cheap as Konosora.

To expand upon this a bit, Shuffle had 6211 owners listed back during the Steam Achievement leak in the Summer of 2018, and if it has maintained a similar review:owners ratio, it would be in the ballpark of 7800 owners now. These aren't bad in absolute terms for a visual novel, however with the cheap sale price and the consistent 50% off sales, it would be a fair bit less revenue than other titles with a similar amount of sales. Obviously though the parties involved weren't happy with these results considering its 3 years later and there hasn't been any additional titles released through Yumehaven, and the social media account has been dormant for the last year. In short, Navel seems to have decided that they weren't happy with the results that MG was getting them, went with a big publisher trying to hit a home run on Steam, and then wasn't happy with the results there either.

How do I get into translating?
I unironically am a neet living with my parents, but I took a Japanese degree and want something to do with my life.
I can read pretty much everything, but there are times when I have to dictionary pretty hard during exposition drops and stuff.

Cherry Kiss is probably another company you can look at for work, that is if you're fine with translating some bottom of the barrel nukige (hell, if you fan translate a Miel/Norn nukige that they haven't done they'll probably buy it off you). It's where Quof and a few other started out. If you're wanting to do this for money though I recommend moving away from VNs after a year or two and moving on to Manga/Light Novels like most other VN translators seem to be doing since it pays much higher rates.
Also if you don't want to bother with fan translations you can probably just reach out to some shitty mobage company and do translation work for them.

Actually at the risk of sounding like an ironic weeb I am not really very attached to VN or anime or anything so I dont have any prejudice about what to work in- itd be cool just to work in whatever field has opportunities. It might sound weird but I just learned Japanese for some personal reasons. So I really wouldn't have any clue where to start fan translating stuff. I'm reading Berserk atm because I'm entry level but obviously that's already been translated. Like I said I mostly just read newspapers and random blogs lol.
Wouldn't mind doing soulless work for mobage. Also gonna look into that.

Go to vndb and look at highest rated vns. Find one that doesnt have a TL and doesn't appear on this thread's wip tl list. Then just pick one seems interesting. Look at technical tags tonsee if it has info dumps, might want to avoid any with that tag for now. Might want to avoid anything that NVL as well.

The VN community in general is very aggressive towards games that they actually want translated getting sub-par translations (no offence meant, but I doubt you'll knock the ball out of the park first try). Start off with something that's short, not really popular and not that difficult to translate if you want to be recognized by a company, because showing off a translation that people hate is not a good way to get hired.
To be completely honest VN fan translations are a pain in the ass and you shouldn't bother with it, go translate some doujins instead.

sol press pays 1 cent per moji for vn translation and is a garbage fire internally, try to work for literally anyone else, even MG, though mg is pretty bad too

definitely try to break into LNs or manga asap

translatiom skill is not = to just understanding 2 lamguages, you need writing ability and transfer ability as well, this might need practice if you're not a natural

From what JNC has revealed, LNs are more consistent sellers over time. For a VN the sales tend to stop after 30 days unless they're specific titles (Rance, Saya, etc). I believe part of this has to do with the pricing which is why the VN companies rely on sales periods.

Sales bumps for LNs and manga also seem to work across different titles. People watching the SAO anime are buying the Infinite Dendrogram LN for example. Also because voice actors are not involved, they're cheaper to license. With less players involved it's easier to turn a profit (and thus they can actually pay somewhat decently). The only titles that go crazy expensive are 'prestige' titles with a big name like Slayers or anything Fate related.

Horror is apparently the only exception to the rules. Horror LNs don't sell.

Like basic skills such as "read through the fucking game first and see if honorifics is a central part or not". There is also an extreme lack of reality check where translators think about what will a Japanese beginner notice and what will they not? Because you are screwing up if you mess with content that anyone who has studied Japanese for 1 month know is an incorrect translation. I am looking at you translators who write "Bro" for sexual oniichan from unrelated girlfriends.
