It's supposed to be Nandi, Shiva's white bull, but they confused the Sanskrit word for cow with sheep (羊). In his left middle arm he holds a sinner or a demon. It's stated in Buddhist texts that Mahakala devours sinners. That sword he carries is typical of Indian depictions too. The snakes that are there are indicative of Shiva's dominion over Nagas. They appear to be influenced by the pressence of the Nagaraja called Vasuki, which is always wrapped around Shiva, and other such cobras wrapped around him. The snakes aren't so popular in Japanese iconography but some Daikoku paintings actually depict snakes wrapped around his bales of rice.

There's really too much to talk about in regards to Shiva/Mahakala/Daikokuten. But in the end it's assured that Matarajin is derived from him. His name, Matarajin, describes just that. God of the Matara. The mothers. The Saptamatara/Saptamatrika. Demonic female deities that eat humans, prey on children and commit wicked acts. In the end they were worshipped out of fear and more myths were created from them, describing them being tamed by Shiva or Ganesha or Parvati in the form of Durga. From demonesses to goddesses. In Japan they came to be known as the 七母天 (Shichimoten, Seven Mother Devas) or 七母神 (Shichimojin, Seven Mother Gods). They are present in the Enmaten Mandala among other demonic figures such as the dakini. They are also apart of Daikoku's retinue. They conveniently represent the seven stars of the Big Dipper and the seven shrines of Mount Hiei, the center of Daikoku and Matarajin worship. The mysteries surrounding Matarajin's origins are dark. This why ZUN named her theme 秘神マターラ. Hishin Mataara. 秘神 means secret god or hidden god. He didn't use 摩多羅 though. He used マターラ. The Sanskrit "matarah". Mothers. This is something mentioned in the HSiFS interview. In it, ZUN and the interviwer indeed state it comes from the original goddess or rather, goddesses, that Matarajin derives his name from. They are the Saptamatara of course. The seven stars of the Big Dipper. The position of the Big Dipper was used in China and Japan to tell what season it was. And behind the Big Dipper, lay the 8th Star. The Pole Star that the Dipper seemingly revolves around. That is Matarajin. Or, the Hidden Star in Four Seasons.
