Dunno if it's just me being a boomer but it feels like most of the vocaloid scene has stalled for the last years, there's a lot of good stuff but nothing that sticks around and become a classic. It's sort of an open question whether Vocaloid is closer to a genre, an instrument, or a particular pop singer. If the latter, then about a decade of stardom is as much as we could hope for. If it's more of a genre, one to two decades of prominence, plus retro periods and retrenchments every twenty or so years afterwards, is still in the cards. If it's an instrument, then it may have lulls and peaks, but it will essentially last for as long as centuries.

I'm getting the notion that Project Sekai has been really making us all think about how things are starting to truly change for the vocaloid scene.

I'm starting to notice how the appeal of vocaloid is slowly starting to change for a widespread audience.

This sort of thing may be what Hachi was trying to prove with Suna no Wakusei all along.

It's not just how the vocaloid scene is "dying". It's how fans and producers are continuously searching for new life that takes on new shapes and forms.

yes, actually. I would certainly prefer for older producers to just stop. That is how it's supposed to be;

Vocaloid producers make a certain amount of music and then become fans again. Other producers will take the place of other producers before them. That way, the integrity of the music is never lost, and the vocaloid vocals will continue to sing through different personalities.

With Project Sekai, the idea of being a producer is now slowly becoming like a business: make as much music for as long as you can. This philosophy encourages vocaloid producers to "sell out", and lose all integrity eventually for the sake of money just so they can stay out of working at retail.

In reality, a music career is never meant to last for too long.True musicians understand that there's a limit as to how far their integrity can go and stop at that limit. That way, the emotional impact that they leave behind from their music can live forever in the hearts of the fans that the musicians originally catered to. I personally find it more respectful for producers and musicians to come to a complete stop eventually rather than change the appeal.

Eventually, producers like PinocchioP will run into that brick wall and will have to change directions or just come to a complete stop. With PinocchioP making songs like Ultimate Senpai, he may be at the point where he's gonna have to decide whether or not he wants to change the appeal of his music or just quit his career.

>>22305963
exactly, it's wasted effort. The desert planet is a metaphor for no matter how the appeal of vocaloid will change, the fact that the appeal of vocaloid is going to be constantly changing is nothing but disrespectful to the fans, both old and new since the newer fans will eventually become veterans, too. It'll always be an empty husk of what it once was originally back when Crypton first released Miku.

That's the sign on a producer who's fame is starting to get to his head. Next step is to drop Vocaloid altogether and start a solo career. The bigger among them use Vocaloid as a staging point. If you're a nobody with no connections it might be hard to get your foot through the door even if you're talented but as long as you can compose a half decent song the Vocaloid community is waiting to eat it right up. Once you have a following and labels know you can move CDs on your name alone or at the very least you can shadow produce, you've got it made. Producers who stick too long with Vocaloid eventually want to have a bigger mark on their own music. Some start inserting their own vocals because they want to be the star and probably realize that the focus is always on the character instead. They want to be able to stand on their own and the more confident go for it in full. Others half-ass it like Pinocchio.

It makes you wonder why they used a vocal substitute in the first place. Oh yeah, to get popular of course. And it worked like a charm for some. Hachi for one. The man I love to hate. To him Vocaloid is like the small village he grew up in before he moved to Tokyo and made it big. One day the mayor of the village decided to pay him to do a small stroll though the old neighborhood just for publicity's sake. Some might get inspired, some might not remember he used to kick ball there. So the dude drives up in his sand colored limousine, all the villagers gasping in awe, never have they seen a car with 50 million views before. All the while the dude just has a frown on his face, looking at his old street and all he sees is a desert, a ghost town. If you ask him everyone who wasn't a loser either died or left town. All the villagers are happy Mr. Bigshot paid them a visit, not realizing how he looks down on them. He's too good for their kind now.

Worst part is, some were head over heels with the song because it fit their "Vocaloid used to be good, you kids wouldn't understand" narrative. Not realizing how Hachi-san was calling them a loser for still listening to Vocaloid in 2017 and spitting in their face. And why wouldn't he? For him any song with less than 200 million views might as well be a failure. Sure 50 mill might be a lot for Vocaloid town but Hachi got 500 million on his last single.
https://youtu.be/SX_ViT4Ra7k
That's half a billion. Let that sink in. Let that ceramic good boi walk right in. Some of his most popular Vocaloid songs combined can't amount to that much. No wonder he hasn't made one since. You're nobody to him. So you bought the Magical Mirai 2017 album? Good job. All you did was line this snob's already phat pocket. Maybe in another 10 years he will make one more song for you.

This dude couldn't be in reverie with the time he used to play with his grandma's matryoshkas, his head was stuck too far up his ass so what we got was Sand Planet. Fuck Hachi.

It's funny that you make the argument that producers only have a limited lifespan and at some point they should just stop.

Meiko was released in 2004. A year after 4chan was founded and a year before YouTube was founded. In that time: Yotsuba being the 404 girl, boxxy, pedobear, rage comics, YouTube Poop, seriously hope you guys don't do this, baneposting, advice dog (& spinoffs), etc. came and went. If any vocaloid producers have over stayed their welcome, it'll be because vocaloid in general has overstayed it's welcome (obviously it hasn't).

And even if a producer DOESN'T change their music style, people will shitpost about them anyway (eg. LamazeP).

You would have a point but it also kinda implies that Sand Planet is symbolic of old Vocaloid when that song is painfully Nu-Vocaloid. The only reason I mentioned Pinocchio and Hachi in the same post was because I wanted to make a parallel between Pinocchio's newer songs and how Hachi also thought it was a great idea to insert his own vocals into Sand Planet. It's the mark on neo-vocaloid. If Hachi thinks he's such a great singer why did he ever need to use a vocaloid in the first place? I don't think he could have made it so far on his own voice. In the world of 3D singers he's terribly generic. If I wanted to listen to his crap I would still be listening to anime OP/EDs. It's just J-pop. Vocaloid is the spice that makes it worth it to me. I also don't remember any "salty pissing matches" over Giga's Bring it On. It's just Hachi and his attitude. Like he's better than everybody the way he leads the pack in the song's MV. He's just so full of himself.

The saddest part is that I bet more than a handful thought he would make a few more songs in the future. But he doesn't care. If he thinks it's a desert why doesn't he do something about it? He is too important to waste his time on any of that. Implying Mitchi M is a loser for releasing songs and albums in 2019.

Deco*27 has been doing Utaite covers of his own songs since the very beginning.

>I also don't remember any "salty pissing matches" over Giga's Bring it On.
You must be blind as a bat. Pic related. The comment section is full of Vocaloid Holdouts (both English and Japanese) REEEEing at normalfags from Tik Tok who heard the Reol version first.

My comments about salty pissing matches was intentionally left vague because it happens to a lot of producers who went pro. For example Honeyworks Vocaloid songs are full of Vocaloid Holdouts fighting against normalfags who say shit like "I hate vocaloids, the singer/voiceactor version was better".

>If he thinks it's a desert why doesn't he do something about it? He is too important to waste his time on any of that.
He doesn't have an obligation to stay.

Thats why it's nice when Honeyworks/Deco*27/40mP/GigaP/etc. pays us a visit despite their mountains of normalfag money.

If he wants to leave there's nothing you can do about it other than moving on.

>Implying Mitchi M is a loser for releasing songs and albums in 2019.
Is he really? The song is about how the vocaloid community has changed (it has, a lot of producers have gone pro).

>> No.22313157

Never cared for Utaite. I don't think anyone who was into Vocaloid at any point would prefer real vocal versions. Only one I remember liking at all was this
https://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm13560752
Because it's weirdly creative and different from the original with the layering of voices and still the Gumi version is vastly superior in my opinion. When I said mark of neo-vocaloid I meant the use of mixed vocals because the producer got full of himself and thinks he's a great singer now who needs to be next to the Vocaloid. That's doesn't have a lot to do with Utaite. I gave Bring it On as an example because that focuses on the characters while Hachi had to not only insert his "amazing" voice but also make some weird self-insert character. He couldn't just focus on the occasion or Miku.

You're right I don't read comments. As much as I dislike Reol I wouldn't blame anyone in this case because she wrote the lyrics. I will give her credit where credit is due and she can promote the song as hers in this case.

>The song is about how the vocaloid community has changed (it has, a lot of producers have gone pro).
I get the feeling that the reason they leave the scene is because they don't want the character taking away from what they think should belong all to them. All the fame, all the credit. Hachi had one job to make a positive song to celebrate the occasion. But he did a really cynical take on it, deciding to point out this evident change. It was painfully apparent he was paid to make it. Maybe Giga was also paid but you don't get that feeling from the song. It's why it was so insulting. It's like him saying "Okay, I will take the money but I don't get what I'm supposed to celebrate, singing songs in the desert."

Then all the "Holdouts" like you called them started patting him on the back for it. Reason being that someone who they looked up to validated how they already felt but it goes deeper than that. If it's a desert who is to blame for it? Were they chased out? The fans didn't love them enough? Their albums weren't selling enough? Like you said they weren't obligated to stay, they left by their own choice. Why should I pat him on the back for pointing out the desert he himself created? Why does he have to push into my face the result of his own actions? Obviously the desert must be a consequence of something but consequence of what? Apart from the producers who passed away why did the others leave? I get the suspicious feeling the song protests against that part of the community that cared more about the characters than the producers behind them. It's like a great star like him didn't want to regress into being a mere shadow producer for a virtual entity again. It's why he made it into a duet as much as possible.

If he were to sing 100% of the song in his voice and Miku wasn't in the video would you be able to distinguish it from a diss track? It's like him saying "We were called to sing for your party but I don't get what we are to celebrate, we're traversing a desert where nothing will grow for millenia, we all left because you cared more for Miku than you cared for us as people, if you still remember Hachi respond to me, I will sing for you for today then it's bye-bye-bye until it goes back to normal." It feels weird that he framed things this way. Instead of focusing on being grateful for his place of origin. He drives home how Miku is nothing without the people who used to make her songs. It's like the idea that Vocaloid fans put him where he is doesn't even cross his mind. It's why he is so full of himself in my opinion. He doesn't want to give credit, in his mind it was all about him all along and going back to Miku is to regress, something beneath him.

C'mon dude. It doesn't take a genius to figure out why they all left. Homeworks wouldn't have gotten their anime without all those normalfags who listened to their non-vocaloid versions.

One could argue that 40mP never really left but even he had to write the ED for Chio-chan's School Road to keep the lights on. And all his new works are published under a publisher rather than self-published/doujin.

Also, he's released an album using his own vocals. Something the other Anon is seething about when it comes to Hachi.

>Something the other Anon is seething about when it comes to Hachi.
Are you blind? Did you miss what I wrote twice? I'm a fine if a producer wants to sing on his own. I was talking about mixing vocals. Mixing Vocaloid and real vocals and I explained in what context. This is not about utaite neither is it about producers not making Vocaloid songs exclusively. It's none of my concern who they work with or how they make their money. Hachi just let fame get to his head, it's why he made a song where he projects being bigger than Miku.

>>22313573
I also don't care if non Vocaloid versions exist. No matter which one came first. I never knew a Reol version of Bring it On existed but I knew she did the lyrics so it makes sense. It's very easy to ignore people like Reol or the non-vocaloid things vocaloid producers do. If anything certain Vocaloid producers are salty and seething when they discover that Vocaloid fans only care for their Vocaloid work or the characters. I could understand some of them feeling cheated when they see that Miku became an international star. At the end of the day everyone knows Miku, not everyone knows Hachi. In the beginning Miku was presented as a tool who serves her "Master" aka the producer. For many years now Crypton has been pushing her as an actual Idol who will take over the world. In a sense the tool outgrew her Masters.

>In reality, a music career is never meant to last for too long.
Is it?
>True musicians understand that there's a limit as to how far their integrity can go and stop at that limit.
Historically, music has been a life-long career for professional musicians. In the West the most famous composers generally worked from youth until their final days. Short careers are for pop idols, people who sell their exaggerated stage personas. The guy quietly working on soundtracks for mid-budget movies doesn't have a short expiration date. There is no reason he would. Why should vocaloid producers be like pop idols and not like other composers?
>I personally find it more respectful for producers and musicians to come to a complete stop eventually rather than change the appeal.
This is absurd. The same famous Western composers often changed their style over their lifetime. As a rule, I think people who create music disrespect their audiences' intelligence not by changing but by sticking to a thing that works and milking it into oblivion. When somebody dumbs down their music, they take a hook they've found and spam it.

Maybe the real problem is that people come to associate a name with a particular style, a particular type of song. It may be a good idea for producers to have different "brands" for different types of songs they make with separate circle names, nico/YT channels, etc. If you are going to try a new style, start a new brand for it. You don't need to to hide that it's you, but it help to create some distance.

This is why so many old fans are feeling gloomy, isn't it? Vocaloid has become a regular interest like any other, it's not new and exciting anymore and all the amazing big goals have already been reached, ambitions have been sated. It's now a normal, slowly advancing technology and it feels like a lot of fans didn't adapt to that.

Don't thing Sand Planet was ever supposed to be a personal attack, just him venting how alien the community is to him now. I'm sure she appreciates the start that Vocaloid gave him, but he also started like what...when he was 16? You make it sound like he was in his 30's, saw Vocaloid was an easy in to the music industry, and used it solely for the purpose of getting his foot in the door. It's more likely be just started as a creative canvas and probably didn't have confidence in himself or his teen-voice until years of support. You sound a bit jealous of his success desu.

you have a fair point.

I've been thinking about how Kanye West has been able to really garnish a lot of attention from everyone and how genius his marketing is via the recent release of his newest album, Jesus is King.

I've been so fixated on this idea of

>oh people shouldn't change styles!

when honestly people shouldn't be too afraid to. I mean, if producers want to stay in a particular style, they're welcome to.

What I meant to say is that Producers shouldn't try to win the appeal of everybody at the same time.

Let's imagine something for a moment:
Think of this idea of changing styles like moving the hands around a clock.

each quarter of the clock that the clock hand swings to represents a different side of the cultural population on earth i.e. the different kinds cultures there are to appeal to.

the clock hand may be slowly moving around, but at any given time, it's at a fixed position.

The clock hand may start at a 12 o clock position, but eventually, it'll reach the 3 o clock position. Then the 6 o clock. Then the 9 o clock. Eventually, the clock hand will return to the 12 o clock position.

Of course, this strategy has it's ups and downs. You can always stay one fixed position or go back and forth between two different quarters of the circle, too.

Ultimately, it boils down to the intent. The intent determines benefits and problems of a strategy.

So how does Kanye West fit into this argument? From what I understand, Kanye pretty much slowly worked his way around the "clock" by only grabbing the attention of certain crowds of people at any given time. On top of that, Kanye also got people talking. Not just people who like his music, but people who hate his music.

When both the people that like Kanye's music and those who hate his music "talk", they're not just talking to an audience. The audience has their own way of interpreting information and makes decisions based on what information they receive and how it's received. The audience may be different between critics, but whether or not critics love or hate his music, there's a chance that both sets of audiences will give Kanye's music a fair chance. The talking is the catalyst.

tl;dr
its best to focus on one style at a time, One Set of appeals at a time.
if you want to switch appeal, do so.
However, it's not a good idea to try appeal to everyone at the same time.
get people talking, even if they hate the music.
The second people start talking about the producer, victory is assured.

Microsoft Sam was briefly in some funny videos. There is enough actually good English text-to-speech engines and voices for them. I've experimented with a few, and the Ivona voices were genuinely nice to listen to. However, none of these voices are cute 2D-type voices with a cute 2D character on the box. They just have a different, more serious character. They also cost a lot because they are sold as accessibility technology, not toys for nerds creating no-budget OC. It's a shame. There might be an English 2D-characters-and-synthesized-speech scene if English Voceroids existed.

I'm confused, but indifferent as a fan. As an advocate for LGBT rights, I'm more than a bit concerned that taking a character who was never implied to be transgender, but is in fact very stereotypically feminine, is sending all the wrong messages, because it basically amounts to deliberately misgendering a cis character for political ends.

this honestly pisses me off. The only thing that this sort of support does is insist that being a vocaloid fan is all about being an openly-supportive liberal and having a lot of clout.

I respect people for what they want to believe in terms of political outlook. It's not my business to tell people otherwise as to what kind of political outlook they should have.

If people want to be a liberal and support LGBTQ+, i got no problem with that.
If people want to be a conservative, i got no problem with that.

HOWEVER, my problem is that people think it's appropriate to be incredibly pushy with their political outlook and believe that everyone **MUST** be politically correct to be a vocaloid fan.

This sort of aggression is leading me to think that Miku is simply being used to push a political agenda rather than actually appreciating her as a character as >>22326214 mentioned. If MIku is being used for a political agenda, then there must be an intent behind it. I would believe that this intent is simply to find some validation in the most ham-handed way possible.

If the intent of the liberals is to find some form of validation, they could have taken the time to form their own culture from the ground up. However, they're incapable of properly forming their own culture due to a lack of experience in being able to properly draw and apply inspiration. so instead of going through all of the hard work of creating their culture from the ground up, they end up doing something that is called Cultural Assimilation. That is exactly what's happening to Vocaloid right now.

This Cultural Assimilation is causing people to forget what it truly means to be a Vocaloid Fan.

Allow me to remind everyone what it means to be a Vocaloid Fan:

it's about being in harmony and being fans and creators together. It's being able to add a part of your personality to the overall outlook of the entire world around us. It's about being able to share the same vision of how we all can see life together. It's about having one unique voice be the representation of the many personalities that are a part of it. It's about being able to come together regardless of where we come from. It's about being able to appreciate each other for our love for Vocaloid and respecting our differences. It's about being able to discover, appreciate, and express our personality.

Now is not the time. Maybe next thread.

tl:dr - it's about the pressure of having to conform to society's expectations. The expectations of others and their ideal of a happy life. It also warns against escapism and basically just tells you that you need to find your own happiness and in the end it's your own duty to be happy and no one else's responsibility. It's like 1984 in the sense that the song manifests into two possibly contradicting meanings at the same time, similar to the concept of doublethink.

Look into the theme of the undine and what it means, then think of Miku being represented as an undine in the song, the audience, her followers lining up at the water's edge. There are two extremes represented in the song. The tyrannical society that tries to make you fit their model of happiness and judges you as a committee. Telling you that being happy (as they understand it: fitting into society) is your duty. They will execute you if you go out of line or don't measure up. But the other extreme rejecting it entirely and following an undine to try and escape from reality is also not real happiness. Don't rely on Miku to make you happy being happy is your own duty that you have to deal with on your own.

tl:dr - don't let others dictate what you should do, but also don't fall prey to distractions or avoid your responsibilities (towards yourself).

Basically don't become a Doctor despite not wanting to just because society or your parents told you you need to make a lot of money, then marry and have kind, buy a home etc in order to be happy. But also don't let yourself become a hikikomori otaku neet who only listens to Miku all day and lets her dictate his life because you're just ruining yourself by avoiding your duties being lured by a Siren. (that costume in Project Diva is literally called Siren, the Project Diva PV also drives home the idea of society executing outcasts who drive down the happiness level meter - which is just a conformity to society's ideal of happiness meter).

You owe it to yourself to go out and find your happiness. That may include Miku but not as dictator.

I went into engineering because I was good at math in high school and didn't really know what I wanted to do.

To be quite honest, does anyone actually enjoy working? I think fucking off after work and enjoying your hobbies is the best case scenario. Seeing as I got awful writing grades in school and haven't got a single creative bone in my body; I don't think I can do the hollywood thing when I quit my job to become a writer or painter.

>that costume in Project Diva is literally called Siren
Maybe I should buy a PS4 some day.
