Interestingly, in the Japanese scripts of most games the age of sexually active characters is never mentioned if the setting is high school or if the character is underage. Your question about my personal response to Yume Miru Kusuri is a very valid one, and one that was asked of me by my readership in the comments of my own blog. Do bear in mind two things: I normally write for an audience familiar with games of all types, and those who understand and accept hentai -- with Slate's audience, I must understand and address a more mainstream viewpoint. Imagine how your mom, never having heard of "eroge," might receive Yume Miru Kusuri.

Second, also know that my article, like any article done for a publication of Slate's tone and reach, received some editing. The tone of distaste toward all the games was perhaps a bit stronger than I would have chosen when speaking to my own audience, and the question of "to ban or not" was an angle the editors selected for me to work with -- but at the same time, I understand and embrace their decision. For an audience totally unfamiliar with eroge, Slate's not an appropriate venue to explain why I think these kinds of games have tones of validity. Small steps first!

It's true that, relative to other h-games, I did like YMK. But when we're talking about its themes in a broader context of American norms, the prevailing, comprehensible standpoint finds them less acceptable. This is how I explained it on my blog:
