I just started oomsest, and just noticed that you can't make your equipment stronger at blacksmiths, so what's the way around that?

There are 4 main ways.

1) the vanilla route of using enchant scrolls.

2) You can find enhanced gear in dungeons, depending on dungeon level.

3) when you reroll a unique artifact (sage's helm, etc) it'll gain enhancement based on the dungeon level of the current map.

4) Pick up a hammer and level your smithing skill(it's stored on the hammer). When you hit journey man, ~lvl 21 you can start to enhance your own gear. The wiki has more info on that.

Just the hammer. There's no potential, so feel free to spam it all day long. Skins, gold bars, animal bones, broken swords + crafting materials, can all be used with the hammer to craft things. Early on combining furniture with npc drops/corpses is the best way to level smithing.

Pets are mostly used for their ability to do task for you. Ie, you can assign detectives that search the world on their own collecting materials for you.

However, they do have 3 combat buffs over vanilla.

1) They all share some xp with each other. So if one pet gains tactics xp, the rest gain a smaller amount. It makes it easier to field large pet squads this way.

2) you can give them skill books (1 at a time) and spell books. They can use them here.

3) If you interact with them you can give them strategy instructions.

Zombies are really OP in omake, since they actually turn their victims into allied zombies. You can easily fill the map with your own zombie horde.
Bubbles and other splitting NPCs work similarly.

I haven't updated my omake in months, but here's how I did it, put the sprite you want into user>graphic folder. the filename needs to be something like "chara_661" (Not sure why 661, I am just looking at my folder, I got a few custom sprites for my pets and they start at 661, I forgot why)
Then interact with your pet and change the character chip.

Finally got to try Elin's Inn.
Since the tutorial isn't enabled in English I have to click random things and see what happens, but even in this bare bones state it is fun to mess around.
If Noa actually continues to work on it I can see this being a good game.

Bear in mind that getting a smithing hammer up and running is an enormous grind. It's incredibly powerful once you get there, but make sure you know what you're signing up for. The best source of broken swords is the kamikaze quest, so don't complete that, just grab swords and cast escape.

You regain a small % potential every time you sleep. Usually 5% or less. In addition you start with potential based on how good your race/class are with those skills.

Hammers:

The best source of broken swords is the carpenter skill, ~30 or so you can craft them.
It's probably better to fuse furniture with monster parts early on. They never fail, so it's a guaranteed source of xp. Skins work just fine too, since the xp formula gives an xp boost based on how many items you've crafted that level. So it's fine to spam cheap skins.

Performer:

I'm not sure exactly how singing scales, but it does have a improves rewards bit just like the Stradivarius. I'd imagine singing will eventually out-class any instrument if it scales at all.

Fun fact, drunk people like performers better. That's why Gould's piano makes people drunk.

If you're doing it from scratch, generally one round of investment in all the non magic shops for the easy to access stores is more than enough to get invest 50 options for the magic shops at a relatively low price. For the non magic shops you don't even need to push them up to 50, I think around 20-30 will be enough if you visit enough shops and towns.

Most weapons are fine because you can get specialized traits to increase the damage anyways. Omake will start off even slower than Plus so keep that in mind as you start off. And South Tyris basically has nothing special to it.

No. First, you'd need the points in riding. Second, there is a limit at like 10-20% reduction.

You can however, just get a lot of perception and always crit. (5000 = 100% crit rate) Crits don't miss.

The stat/skill cap in vanilla/plus is 2000. Exp is decreased by roughly lvl/10. Plus caps the effect at skill lvl 300, for 1/30xp.

It's not really worth worrying about this, since you can only really exploit the low xp multiplier when you have single digit skill levels. Even then, it's not much of a boost. Not many things can give you more than a few skill/attribute levels at one go even with that.

You might want to save hero cheese, herme's blood, and speed uppers for when you reach their softcaps from AP (300 life, 800 speed).

Other than that, make sure that ranged attacks aren't attempted against enemies outside the range limit, and make the final line a catch-all command like "if enemy distance >= 1: move forward".
Also, you can use * on the numpad to swap lines.

I think I've read somewhere that in Japan they prefer vanilla Elona and will jump you if you say you use any patches. Why is that?

Meanwhile here we have Elona+ Custom-GFU: a patch installed on top of a patch installed on top of a patch installed on top of an extended version of the game. I haven't seen any other game with so many layers developed by different people, what's the deal with that?

It works the same way as creating a gene after marriage. It spawns a fresh ally similar to alien children. The child's race and class is relative to your spouse, the sprites are kind of randomized however.

I feel bad about asking questions, but the game feels incomplete in the sense that I feel I'm expected to know things that aren't explained.

The game spawns horses and soldiers that are always neutral, but you can't interact with them unless you attack. Is beating someone to near death the only way to make them an ally?

Speaking of allies, if you mainly use allies to fight you never see neither your allies', nor your enemies' health. Even if you attack someone to see their health bar it eventually disappears again. Do I just read careully the log and occasionally zap a healing spell when my pet recieves a blow just to be safe?

Very select types of enemies are non hostile. These are things like some horses, some low level bandits, adventurers, and whatnot. This is something you will learn to recognize as you continue playing the game - what types don't immediately attack and what types do. There isn't really a tag for this on the wiki, note that not all Horses for example, are neutral.

You can technically attempt to interact with neutral entities by targetting them with * and using things like Domination wands and Monster Balls. At low levels there is generally very little reason to do this because most neutral entities aren't particularly strong. As you get into higher levels you start to get exceptions to this (Such as the Cthugha which spawns neutral but is extremely dangerous).

You need to find an item called the stethoscope in order to figure out your ally's health. You should however, be able to see your enemy's health once you land a hit on them. Generally it is advised that you at least learn a tagging spell of some sort like magic dart.

OK, so I tried playing the most recent version of Elona and plus if I remember correctly. Thing is, two times my game crashed (I think both happening while leaving Yowyn by the north exit) and the save couldn't be recovered.
So, to avoid that from happening again, I wanted to ask you which version of Elona do you use, and if you recommend Omake or whatever its name was

There are 6 ways to get allies (in plus):

You can magically recruit them. This includes reading diaries and wishing for allies.

You can clone them with the astral light pen, provided they are at soul mate or love.

You can hire adventurers in town. They ask for money and only work for you for a time. They'll probably be stronger than you and your pets for most of act 1, and maybe some of act 2 if you don't know how to make strong characters yet.

You can buy them from the horse dealer yowyn in act 1 or the slave master (derphy).

You can defeat some special enemies in combat and they'll ask to join. This is pretty rare, so don't rely on it.

And you can enslave them with monster balls, or domination magic.

Use 1.90.4 E+C if you're in doubt. That's the most standard variant in use on the general. Update past that at your own risk, as far as we known this is the end of English support for E+C.

If you were playing E 1.22 up until now, Omake is a viable alternative. If you were playing E+ and feel that it's slow or grindy, do not try Omake, because it is even slower and about as grindy.

Martial arts is pretty good in omake. The dedicated class can gain the 100% unarmed damage feat right off the gate and another additional feat that increases pierce on crits and buffs two hand damage with your MA level. There's also the additional feats (agrarian trooper which adds your gardening level into tactics), new mutations & corruptions (claws that inflicts cut on unarmed attacks) and the warmage class that lets you enchant your fists with elements.

Omake doesn't have equippable claws, the claw mutation prevents your PC from wielding weapons in hands period. You can switch to warmage and gain its invoke class skill by joining the magic guild and talking to the guildmaster after you increased your rank.

The prostitute's martial arts feat is a joke, same with the cultist. The feat has five stages (5, 15, 50, 75 and 100% increase). Martial artists start from the third stage (50%) while the other two only have the measly 5% damage increase. Martial arts are also more skill dependant than the other fighting styles, every little bits of initial point counts.

MA in oomsest is considered worse for 2 reasons:

1) you can't get +1000 weapon enhance, so your damage multiplier won't be as high. This isn't that big of a deal in practice, since everything can hit the damage cap anyway.

2) Lack of enchantments. You'll need a weapon to get absorb stamina for the bubbling trick, but you can live without that. The lack of elemental damage is more problematic, since rainbow weapons do capped damage 10 times. However, warmages have a skill called enchant element (for all elements), it works like a super powered "attribution" so you can still get all the elements up and running even without weapons.

So, it's a little more work to make a broken endgame MA, but it's nothing crazy.

There's not really any advantage the races have over each other for MA. Weight is less important so the fairy trade off is more useful for early game resists. Lich is also a nice choice, since it has some of the best naked pv/dv stats. Otherwise, yerles' extra skill points can help alleviate the plat grind.

From what I've played, you need to have a food and water for your people, or else they refuse to build anything. I'm not sure if there's a way to actually harvest and gather any food and water, so the only way you can get them is to build them (honey is considered water).
Designating a stockpile area is a must if you want to keep your area tidy, as any leftover materials that they have after building something, they just drop it on the ground.

I'm level 46 and still in Act 1 and have 5 pets. They're currently using my old hand me downs and whatever shit I can scrummage around.

I managed to find 3 living weapons so far and the rest are using various precious weapons I found. So weapons are fine so far and they are fighting well, but It's not really uncommon for me to find one of them getting instakilled by some enemy in a dungeon.

Save up gear that has the status immunities when you find it, and magic resist.
Once you have a full set (you can probably skip poison), and enough for superb magic resist, change the gear into dragonscale, enhance at a blacksmith, and toss it on a pet.

This'll cover almost everything you want and gives them a minimum level of performance. You can min-max as desired.

Yeah. Use the equip making recipes in a pot for fusion to generate miracle and sometimes godly quality items. The end result will be items of the same type as you put into the recipe, usually you get 3 of them, sometimes 1 or 2 for certain rare items. So take a suit of plate mail, any material, any quality, put it and the other ingredients into your pot for fusion's hard equip making recipe, and you'll get 3 miracle or godly suits of plate mail. The ingredients aren't very expensive come mid game, so if you don't like one of the suits just put it back into the pot to roll for another 3. With weapons there's no way to guarantee they'll be living, but you can make a ton of miracle weapons in a short time with equip making recipes so it doesn't take long to gear up your team with all the living weapons you could want.

After you've made an item with good enchantments, use a material kit to make them into the best material for their item type (adamantium is a good bet in general) and then finally, use a craft repair kit to give them perfect stats.
