The main idea behind a wholoid is that people don't know her or her songs but there is more to it than that. A wholoid is often not well promoted or supported by the company behind her. Individually even. IA does it internationally. Teto had illegal hologram concerts in South America, she was in Miku symphony, is famous in general because of memes and being the face of UTAU. Gumi has festivals, or conventions dedicated to her, her own game and has always been famous by sheer virtue of her quality.

Then we get to the cosplay. Let's assume people don't know their songs or like them that much. Let's assume we're talking about Meiko and Kaito. Meiko is a boring old hag who doesn't even get cosplay but Kaito at least is that dude who people dress up as whenever someone's girlfriend wants to do a Miku cosplay and tries to drag her boyfriend to a convention. Meaning even people who don't know who Kaito is know him. That says something. If you want to call Kaito a wholoid be my guest but keep in mind that makes it worse for the rest of the wholoids who are on average cosplayed even less.

Finally we get to the last point. If you need to ask if your loid is a wholoid then it's a wholoid. If your loid wasn't a wholoid you wouldn't need to ask. You would already know. Most fans of wholoids are insecure about it. Meiko fans, Yukari fans. The whole term wholoid was invented to put them in their place and remind them where they belong. They're either jealous of non wholoids or will try to argue against it. Yukari is the poster child of all wholoids in that regard. It's the power of association. When someone says Vocaloid the first picture that should come to mind is Miku. When someone says UTAU the first character you should think of is Teto. It's not bait. The whole point of the term wholoids was for Miku Chads to dab on fans of lesser loids. Even today Miku is without competition and technically anything that is not Miku is a wholoid. Some other loids get promoted to above wholoid status merely because they contribute to Miku's popularity by being on her team (Rin/Len, Luka, Meiko, Kaito) or out of respect because they actively try to be decent competition for Miku (IA, Gumi, Teto). Most crypton loids have this symbiotic relationship with Miku where they contribute to her popularity but also steal from it. It's why most people generalize Cryptonloids as non wholoids even when Kaito and Meiko technically are for not bringing enough to the table.

When I say competition I mean IA is her top competitor at the moment like Gumi was in the past. IA's company puts a lot of effort into territories where Miku is unbeatable but they get points for trying at least. Teto is also good competition by being her UTAU counterpart but she gets additional points for all their musical collaborations to a level where she's almost like a Cryptonloid. Teto is in Miku's games, in her concerts, in her songs.

Yukari on the other hand neither competes nor collaborates. She is in her own territory, her safe space where people know her mostly for let's plays and lewds. When I think of Yukari I think of a skater girl. I don't even think of a singer.

V4X was the nail to the coffin

If CFM actually created a good update in the beginning of the V3 era with multiple voicebanks along with an updated core vb that kept her distinct V2 sound, but made it easier to use, Luka would have smoked out Gumi V3 and potentially IA as well.

It’s a shame how Luka usage fell throughout the years and how her V2 really is the best vb of her. V4 sounds like a “younger” Luka append gone wrong.

That is a good and bad comparison at the same time. Valve is not making Half-Life 3 because they are making money from something else and it would be too much of a risk. Similarly the people behind Yukari and Una either are making money from more stable sources or they don't want to take the risk of something that takes real commitment like organizing a concert or financing a game. Except it's even worse because you know for sure Valve can finance Half-Life 3 if they wanted to. We don't know for certain if Yukari/Una have the money to make a game or if they can justify the risk and investment. It's often underappreciated how much effort, licensing, marketing, development and distribution adds up. IA's game has a rough time getting off the ground. People thought it was vaporware but it turned out decent and Gumi's game got fucked by licensing but it still exists and that is a testament to how she had enough legendary solo songs to give it a try.

Luka in her prime was successful enough to establish herself and build a legacy so she can never be a wholoid no matter what. Gumi is like that too. She was massive at a point in the past. Humbly so. Without having too many lewds and that is commendable. If you were asked to give some legendary Gumi songs it's really easy. You can either pick any song from her game or at the very least anyone would be able to mention Matoryoshika. What is Yukari's Matoryoshika? It's true that lack of collaboration with Miku didn't help her build a legacy but what is Yukari's Ochame Kinou? What is that one or ideally more than one Yukari song that everyone knows? Don't get me wrong, I think Yukari does have good songs from talented producers but nothing really groundbreaking, nothing that establishes her as a musical icon in the eyes of the masses, nothing legendary. She has no legacy. Let's plays don't build a legacy. They are shallow and easily forgotten, only relevant for the day each episode is released.

I'm focusing on Yukari because she is the cutoff for where wholoid status begins, being the most famous among wholoids. She acts like the event horizon of the wholoid black hole. If your character failed to build a legacy, has any less of a presence, influence or reach than Yukari does then your character enters the wholoid blackhole and is doomed forever. At best Yukari's greatest works form the accretion disk. Pic related.

It saddens me really. I've known Yukari for 5 to 6 years now. In that time she didn't grow, achieved no milestones, failed to establish herself or build a legacy, failed to increase her reach or break into new territories. You have a window of 3 to 4 years to make a name, build a legacy for what you are best know for. What is Yukari famous with? Futanari porn? Lewds? Let's plays? It's embarrassing.

Yukari doesn't measure up to IA or her presence on stage. What is Yukari's Conqueror? She doesn't have the legacy of Gumi, Teto or Luka. Teto was a joke, Gumi was a Rankaloid yet look how far they got. What is Yukari's ECHO? Can you even call Yukari a Virtual DIVA? I think that name doesn't fit. She is more of a gamer girl and her fanart reflects that. This is what being a Voiceroid does to you. She can hope to be PewDiePie at best but she will never be Elvis.

Yukari missed her window. Now it's too late. She is done. It's over. Kizuna Akari came and shark is the new hotness. It's funny because Akari almost stole the spotlight. It shows how weak of a presence Yukari had if it was so easily eroded. ONE didn't have the same impact on IA. In fact ONE compliments IA while keeping her independent. You can see this in fanart. It's only downhill for Yukari. She can't even hope that Miku will drag her corpse around like she does for Luka. Yukari was the original "Literally Who". She is THE Wholoid. The first to be bullied with that name and that, sadly, is her legacy.

The third album is 音楽性の違いにより解散しました。 and that's also the name of the participating circle, made up of SuP, HitsujiP, Tokita, and knee. There's only 7 tracks, but most are pretty lengthy with the fifth one being about 25 minutes long (and mostly instrumental).
