The "problem" with the tournament was that it was run by Freestyle Takeover who more or less ran it like a DDR freestyle tournament.

The DDR freestyle community saw this game as another platform to continue doing what they do but in a more flexible way. Most everyone else saw the game as purely shuffling since the game itself heavily alludes to that. People were upset about the game not being played "properly." Freestyle in DDR isn't usually that controversial since the game is fairly abstracted and not any specific style of dancing. It's also a fairly small and insular community these days.

It's like 2003 levels of bar argument. People got upset about everything not being done the "right" way. Same thing applies to a lesser extent with things like wrist scratching or any other thing someone has a problem with.
At the end of the day it's just a game. Games are meant for to be played for enjoyment, not pushing your belief system onto other people. If the way that tournament was ran upset you then it's best to just avoid anything related to Freestyle Takeover altogether.

The person trying to PFC an 18, the person playing doubles without the bar, or the person flailing their way through Break Free or Happy are all trying to have fun in their own way. You can shuffle, you can jump up and down like an idiot, just have fun with the game.

The problem was way less about "muh shuffling" and more about using the drs stage to do a dance that had fuck all to do with a chart you're supposed to loosely follow. They weren't playing DanceRush, they were doing a dance that happened to be on the DanceRush platform. By the DDR freestyle logic, they should be at least adhering to the prompt and try to be creative. It's more inventive to bend the prompt to your favor instead of ignoring it outright. The fact that the winners were heralded as groundbreaking are what divides the community, not something as simple as le shuffle.

I think a key difference between DDR and DRS is the strictness. DDR is definitely the stricter game - if a player tries to essentially ignore the chart then over the course of the song they're almost certainly going to fail (outside of stuff like bracketing on single player charts). In dancerush, there are videos of people clearing songs by literally doing nothing.

While people who can't score claim that KAC's format is bad, KAC at least tries to combine style & scoring in an interesting way. The players at KAC were both good and stylish, even when improvising under pressure.

Thank you for posting it. Honestly it doesn't look terrible but I can't comment further just from seeing a video online. It's hard to judge how nice it really is without seeing it and playing on it. I don't know how well it would hold up to faster play, like songs with long 12+ arrows per second streams. It is much more practical than a used dedicab though, so IMO if you have the room, get a used dedicab. If you don't, a Stepmaniax is the only proven guaranteed quality pad, then there's the polish pad and decent home-builds (here's mine, it's sturdy and fun to play on) and everything after that either doesn't exist (impulse) or is so shit that it's embarrassing to even mention.

Pic is during Luka night fever, no pad issues (like missed steps or false positive steps) since I finished the build. It should last as it currently has 330k arrows and no signs of wear.

I have a question specifically for people whose home setup is very different from playing on a cab: how much do you change your WN/GN/Sud+lift when playing on cab vs. at home?

Here's my situation: I play 85% of the time at home (fp7 controller) on a small laptop screen that's several feet away from my face; my green number is 283 and my lift+sud is roughly 325, with lift of 160. This works great for my timing at home, but when I try to use these settings on a cab where a giant screen is up in my face, I play like shit using these settings. My last few sessions on cab I spent almost the entire time trying to fuck around with my settings to no avail, so I'd like to know if anyone has similar issues and what their solutions were so that I preferably don't waste another session fucking around with settings.

Do not change settings. You are supposed to find a GN and stick with it, WN is a bit more flexible. Your offset changes from machine to machine as every cab/home setup is a bit different.

Yuancon's pop'n controller is fine. I would be very impressed otherwise for someone to fuck up a literal box with 9 holes in it.

I mean, if you really, absolutely want to future proof yourself, a DJDao RED with proper tweaks is the way to do it.
If you're looking for something more accessible, a FP7 or Yuancon IIDX are really solid at what constitutes a "good" price. Regardless of what you get, switching out the board for an Arcin and getting Omoron switches isn't needed right away, but you'll notice the difference as soon as you get them.

Sanwa buttons are a luxury, but they feel fantastic if you can get them. Otherwise, both are improved with arcin boards/better switches. Customizing the art on both isn't hard either, if you care about that sort of thing.

I've had one player tell me they were having problems with timing because they couldn't hear the beat. I mean, that's a pretty big impediment to playing rhythm games, right? This person is playing the expert/challenge charts on DDRA20 reasonably well, if not going into the 16+ songs.
Comparing DDRA20 to the PS/2 version of SuperNOVA, I think the timing window must be wider. Even just using a straight PS/2 controller, the timing seems much more difficult on SN than using my actual body on A20.

DDR is definitely easier mentally than Pop'n. Hand-eye coordination over a couple feet of controller is easier than moving your whole body around the mat, though.
I wonder how keysounding would affect DDR? It might make it easier for people who are used to it, since you would easily notice if you did the entire fucking song off-beat. The slight discord between what you expect and what you hear makes it easier to learn complex charts.
