Post photographs and videos you or others have taken around Japan.
Modern or traditional, urban or rural, landscape or macro, anything is good.

Try to keep pictures natural looking if possible.
If you know the location a photo was taken, it is useful to post it with the image.

>Anon who usually starts these threads said he would be too busy to keep this runing, and asked for someone to continue this for a while
>A day has passed since the last thread was archived, so I'm starting this one, my apologies if I fuck something up

Oh, that's mine
search for
チャペル グドゥエル
You could hear the bell ring very loud from afar.
It's in Osaka, near the famous building with an expressway going right through it.

Also, churches follow western architecture bc it's a foreign religion, and so they they follow the original style and parafernalia that comes with religion.
Same reason you can see orthodox churches or muslim mosques with their original style in a catholic country, or vice-versa.

that applies to classic style churches, but you can see a lot of modernist style christian churches and cathedrals, as many such buildings are, of course, not that old.

Residential architecture is usually focused in functionality, not aesthetics.
On the other hand, traditional buildings like temples and pagodas are made of wood, that's why they don't last centuries.
Not only traditional buildings, almost all things where buit with wood until like 70/80 ago. Nowadays I would say something like 50% of normal unifamiliar houses in residential areas are wooden, Nowadays most public buildings are built in concrete, but you can still see wooden old/abandoned schools and such... That's also why abandoned buildings seem 10x older that they really are compared to western concrete abandoned places, wood decays really fast...

Maybe if taken care can last centuries, but... wood burns, can be destroyed by typhoons, lighting strikes, and so on... lots of stuff happens during a century or a millennium. All of japan ancient historical buildings have been completely destroyed and rebuilt several times
I live 500m from a phoenician city archaeological site, it was under sand for +2800years and the walls are still intact in many parts...

Also I was comparing wooden vs concrete in abandoned places (aka unkept) so, yes, abandoned wooden buildings age/decay much faster than concrete buildings, that's a fact. I'm not talking about aesthetics here.

I only did half of it, planned to do the whole thing over two days, but sadly day 2 would have been rainy, so I decided to only do half of it on Day 1. Went from Hiroshima to Mihara through the Shinkansen, then took a Ferry from Mihara to Setoda (on Ikuchijima Island). There's a rental bike shop in Setoda, so it's possible to start the trip right there. Then I went to Imabari. There are many ways to plan this, as there are rental bike shops in various towns, so you can start and end it wherever you like.

I think two days is the way to go if you intend to to the whole thing. It can be completed in 1 day, but then you'd have to start early, almost never stop to admire the scenery or take pics, and be in good enough physical condition. Doing it leisurely in two days would be best. Or half of it in 1 day, like I did. Electric assist is not necessary, the whole bike path is really well thought, you won't have to climb more than necessary, they really leveled the path perfectly.

>>22240393
I enjoyed it immensely. Though I would suggest looking at some of the alternate route, near the end (last island before reaching Imabari), you go through a lot of rural towns. It's comfy, but coastal road really is where it's at. Some alternate routes go through the coast (but then you won't follow the 10/10 marked bike track)

Also, forgot to add, choose your bike wisely. Mine had a shitty saddle, and the day after (and even the one after) I just couldn't sit anywhere. Goddamn, my poor ass. On the bright side, I got a belt-driven bike, first time using those, and I definitely like it more than the regular chain bike we all use. It convinced me to buy one.

I was supposed to study in Japan this semester but I changed my major and without realizing it got kicked from the program. Unfortunately this means the small amount of 日本語 that I was 勉強する has now become ぜんぜん。
In fact I cannot even recognize kanji or most of the kana. Its a shame because I spent a small fortune on textbooks and lessons. I still have the books but I have little reason to study. I have given up on Japan I ever got there :(

Wasn't nearly as crowded by tourism as I was expecting. Still a touristy place by japanese standards, but can't even compare to even mid tier tourist sites in Europe, thank god... I think only Kyoto and Nara can get to that level.
Still, unlike kioto/nara, almost all tourist in Nikko were Japs.
I'm not a pretentious hipster tho, it's just I like to avoid places that make me feel like i'm in an amusement park, even if it means missing some major tourist spots. Comfyness always first

Yeah you'd better give up, you loser.
Nevermind that plenty of people have studied Japanese to the point of fluency without any hope of ever studying abroad there (I'm an engineering major, no programs offered for that sort of thing between my university and Japan). Plus, you don't have to be a student to visit Japan, do it later on in life when you're financially stable (assuming you earn a worthwhile degree).
It can't be that much of a loss though, I can see how lacking your understanding of the language is just from the three snippets of Japanese you posted. Also you're a fool for spending "a small fortune" on textbooks and lessons, which indicates that you don't understand the value of hard work and thought that you could just buy Japanese proficiency if you spent enough on expensive textbooks and instruction.
>I have little reason to study
Then you clearly don't and didn't ever care that much.
Why did you make this post?

>Plus, you don't have to be a student to visit Japan, do it later on in life
The "worthwhile degree" part was referring to the fact that if that guy gets a degree in something worthless that doesn't pay decently well, he'll never have excess money for overseas trips.
Although you do bring up a good point, Japan does not grant permanent residency to anyone with less than a Bachelor's degree, unless you marry.

I did twice, planning to go a third time next year
Just gather all the info you can and plan ahead (you'll have to improvise anyway), once there use your cellphone (Gmaps and such) intensively, mark places, print maps...
Most big/medium size train stations will have at least part of the staff that can speak English, and will gladly help you, don't hesitate to ask to avoid getting in the wrong platform/train, just ask nicely, speak slowly and dont expect them to speak top level english... Even in the rare case no one speaks english, they will often understand basic questions, you can just show the train ticket or point to the name of the place you want to go... they will even guide you to the ticket machine and gladly help you

Problems may come at very small and non-JR train stations or halts... a lot of them are unmanned, often not even pasengers on sight, so you can't ask no one... But this is only in rural areas out of touristic places, an even there it should be at least one manned station not so far away.
I mean WORST CASE scenario would be getting lost in maybe the most safe and awesome country in the world, just have money with you and enjoy, don't be a pussy anon.
But really, thats only speaking of really random non/tourist rural areas, you will have 0 problems in any urban area, let alone major tourist sites in Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara, Osaka, Nikko, Yokohama, Hiroshima etc... you will easily find info in English

But, of course, learn at least a list of basic useful phrases, Sumimamen (before asking something), arigatou, kudasae, etc. It will help show you are not an arrogant jerk
