Only the original series Boys And Girls Next Door has those big name American/British alternative rock music tunes. The rest have some notable indie artists from time to time but it's more deep cuts than anything instantly recognizable to the average person. And every series after that has a Japanese netflix soundtrack version vs an international soundtrack version due to copyright. If you wanna try the series out I urge you to get the Japanese version via Japanese netflix or episode rips pulled from there; original Japanese track pics always fit better.

Finally got around to finishing this. Why did they shove in a corporate conspiracy at the final 1/3 of the series? Sure, it's an Ikeido Jun story but that doesn't mean all of his stories have to be just like Hanzawa Naoki. The whole time it just felt like I was watching a lesser version of it. It's not like it was awful since it was still written well enough to be interesting but it felt so out of place in contrast with the inspirational sports drama and motivational soundtrack being re-used for the "corporate thriller" scenes. I get that it still ties in somewhat, with depicting the divide of salarymen who follow their dreams and those who go up the corporate ladder for money and stability. But at that point in the story I really just wanted to watch the Astros play their final games. I also get that the writer specializes in salaryman wish fulfillment but shoving it into this didn't work even though it tied in well in Hanzawa Naoki. This is my 4th adaptation I've seen from this guy; Tetsu no Hone being great, Hanzawa Naoki being amazing, and Shitamachi Rocket being crap but I guess it has its uses as wish fulfillment for small businesses so it just wasn't for me. No Side Game was good for a corporate sports drama even though it was generic at many points, I still enjoyed it.

i like watching older stuff. i just finished an early kiyoshi kurosawa film called 'the exitement of the do re mi fa girl'. it's a pink film (did japan make anything else in the 80s) set on a university campus that riffs on new wave and ero films. it follows a girl travelling from the country to a tokyo university looking for her childhood sweetheart. there's characters who stare into the camera and give dead pan monologues on love (mostly nonsense, and resembling the political asides in godard films). there's a song and dance number. you have a charlatan professor giving bunk psychology theories that act as a pretence for students to get naked. overall i thought it was quite good fun.

Is this worth watching?

Was it really necessary to make a sequel for this? I thought the original series ended in a nice way but I guess there's lots of outside reasons for it to happen. Abe Hiroshi is my favorite japanese actor so I can't help but watch it, not to mention I really enjoiyed S1. The first episode was alright, maybe too much pandering for returning viewers but the new characters and plotlines were set up well enough for me to be engaged. What stroke me as odd was how shitty the camera quality was, like they were using the same ones from the filming of S1 all those years ago. It made the show felt cheap, not like the orginal wasn't either, and I don't think people are really pining for the look of digital cameras from 2006. They also got the actor that plays Murakami to change his hair into the same way from back then, which if you don't know screams mid 00s japan. All that said, I wasn't laughing as much as when I saw the first series so I guess the writing also lacked something. But I'm still looking forward to the next episode purely out of curiosity.

I think it's because Tokyo is no longer the technological and economical centre of asia, Seoul has taken its place. the problem that for some reason, some aspects of Japanese culture get kinda underground, dramas are exemple of it, i feel that we are getting onto Dark Ages of J-Dramas, most legal services stopping put new recent series and the fans are slowying subbing with the possibility that they can stop ay any moment

Can't argue with that. It's at a point where I don't even have the choice to pick my preferred seasonal dramas because they don't get subbed so I have to settle to whoever releasing steady subs, and even those are pretty rare nowadays. Almost all of the picked dramas (most of them are shit btw) this season are way behind the Japanese schedule and I wouldn't be surprised if they got dropped at some point, happened to me a number of times already.
It's looking grim for the J-Drama scene.
