the average djter is good at faking having a 高い-level 日本語能力, but the truth is nobody here actually has it. just post screencaps of raw anime or vns, and throw a few random japanese words between english words (like "did this 奴 just kiss my 妻? imma 殺す that yarou") and people will believe you're umai as fuck at it.

I don't mean to insult you like the other guy, but in that same period of time, you could've finished 10 games and become a bit comfortable at reading Japanese. Not that it's entirely your fault though, because the anki-fanatics here are so ridiculous.

Would be nice for people to realize that no amount of anki is really going to help you when an author unleashes a bunch of words at once that you've never heard of before and the only option is to look them up at the spot. Names of fictional places, made-up words and or ones that don't even have an entry in a regular Japanese-English dictionary.

As soon as possible, yeah. I would start after finishing Tae Kim or whatever guide you go with since you should know a few hundred words after. There's nothing to prevent the initial ass-kicking you get by reading something so just pick something that seems fun and likely for you to complete.

Something like Eustia or Leylines works fine in the beginning.

asap... beeing comfortable with hiragana and katakana helps. the key is to set low expectations at first as you will spend most of the time looking up grammar (check the djt master grammar guide, as it has the best references) and vocab. Set a goal of 20/40/60 (i do ~50 in 60-90min) _new_ words/kanjis you want look up and learn daily. At first you will do maybe 2 sentences a day, but it will get more eventually. After a month you will have a good base, after 2 months you will slowly get comfortable and after 3 months you will shit on any matt groupie out there, that is doing the MIA thing for 6 months or less

it's a lot easier to make mistakes in japanese if you already know chinese (or vice-versa), but it's not really any easier to trully acquire japanese as a whole. in regards to grammar structure, i've heard even knowing estonian would be more helpful than knowing chinese. in regards to vocabulary, knowing chinese or korean might be helpful with 漢語, but most of the words used in an average conversation about everyday, non-specialized topics are 和語, so you're pretty much fucked in that aspect. kanji readings have no parallel in any other language in terms of how fucked up they are, so good luck with that.
all you'll gain as an advantage going from chinese to japanese is not having to deal with rtk, which would save you several dozens of hours of doing anki reps (practically nothing in the wider context of trying to actually learn/acquire japanese through 10k hours of comprehensible input).

There's nothing difficult about Eustia. I've had several cases of beginners starting with it (including myself) and they ended up just fine. The majority of the sentences are short and the story doesn't throw any curveballs at you.

The difficulty of most eroge are relatively similar and a beginner should start with whatever they're interested in. Unless it's something written by Romeo, Mareni, Jackson, Narahara, Hino, Shumo or anything else that's memed for it's difficulty etc, there's no issue. I'd avoid manzai-heavy games too like the one in my screenshot, but all in all there's not much of an issue. With some common sense, you can find out whether you can handle a game or not and adjust accordingly.

If you think abstinence is what must be justified and not meaningless and emotionless fucking, then you are a human garbage. Virginity is the inborn state of a person, and to have sex for no purpose but to have sex is the worst thing you can do in the realm of sexuality. Sex should be meaningful, or else it is not worth it and is only harmful for both participants. Maybe she agrees to have sex with you, because she's also just as stunted and corrupt as you, but that does not mean you should do it. Maybe she seduces you and you feel then it is your duty as a man to do it, but that does not mean you should. Do you think the Buddha fucked hookers or went to bed with intoxicated women from the street, just so that he'd experience the pussy? He didn't. Maybe you can criticise this and say that pussy is all that matters, by your worldview being from emotional corruption and flawed capitalism, but then your worldview is bad for yourself and those around you and should change. Sexuality is not a playground. Other people are not playthings. If you treat sexuality as a commodity, and other people as commodities, then you are a human garbage.

Fuck.
Somehow it's hard to believe that i really just need to listen more and more and more and eventually my brain will start parsing all the speech automatically and be able to separate all the words etc.

Is that really the way to go? It feels like I'm just hearing noise. I know that the parsing process is somewhat unconscious but I'm afraid that it's not happening at all. I listened for close to 9 hours by the way. Sometimes active, sometimes passive.

>> No.22200531

the more you can understand the more youll get out of it just like with reading
it helps if what is giving you trouble is only because of your listening and not because you dont know the words or grammar

>> No.22200555

>>22200531
yea, basically the problem is that my brain can't yet make out where one word ends and the other starts, and it can't comprehend the words in time as they are spoken. in theory as i continue listening and listening my brain will start recognizing patterns and words and parse it all by itself, but it's difficult to believe in this process while you're sitting there and everything just sounds like gibberish to you.
especially considering it is said that you can learn a language exclusively through exposure and that grammar study and vocabulary SRS are purely supplemental to make the process more efficient and less time consuming, but before i started studying japanese i watched maybe a thousand hours of anime, yet i didn't pick up any japanese (except for some isolated single word expressions like バカ)
Then again, multi tasking is a "lie", and what your brain is really doing is just that it's rapidly shifting focus, so while reading english subtitles all these years watching anime my brain might have not parsed any of the spoken language at all during that time.

anyways, i really hope i'll start seeing progress as i just keep listening and listening even if speech just blends together at this stage.

by the way, this is by no means an attack, i'm just saying it's better to know what you're studying and why and its place on the list of important things before you study it.

you start with hiragana, katakana then move on to kanji, but there are different ways of approaching kanji. you can brute force hiragana and katakana in under a week

it was easier for me to kanji through kanjidamage's visual-based mnemonics than it was to learn either set of kana by pure rote memorization.
part of what helped me learn and somehow retain kana was not just writing them on their own a bunch of times, but instead trying to write down words i'd already learned through anime (like アニメ, さくら, コンビニ, かえる, ひみつ, モービルスーツ), in addition to western people and place names (ウェリントン, ジグムンドフロイド, ノボシビルスク). it took me tons of practice reading manga full of furigana and children's books to really settle them within my mind.
>>22200787
learning pitch accent, on the other hand, seems like a waste of time, since one could just easily try to remember words not as a dictionary says they ought to be pronounced, but rather as they've been pronounced by somebody in a certain occasion.

>it's like saying "why should i bother learning calculus when i can just figure it out for myself like the greeks"
it's really not
the pitch patterns are a byproduct of your japanese immersion which is necessary if you want to learn japanese
whereas in your example you're just trying to learn calculus in a really inefficient way

>> No.22201455

>>22201431
>the pitch patterns are a byproduct of your japanese immersion which is necessary if you want to learn japanese
they aren't really though unless you are already at least familiar with how the system works, unless you are already native in a tonal language. english native speakers can't naturally hear pitch unless they've trained themselves to which is a lot easier to do by learning the rules so your brain knows what to expect than just trying to figure it out for yourself. this is especially true when you are someone who is not already essentially near-native level in listening ability, since your brain is struggling to simply keep up with what is being said at all in terms of sounds/meaning. there's no way you can focus on pitch accent while listening if you are just struggling to make out what they're even talking about and need subs to understand.

>> No.22201484

>>22201463
>this is all conscious knowledge which is largely useless when it comes to language learning
it's not at all useless, or else noone would recommend reading grammar rules, dictionaries, or anything like that. the point of the rules is not to learn them but to have an idea of them in your head so that your brain can subconsciously figure it out much much faster, this is true for grammar and dictionary definition of words too.

furigana is most commonly used over kanji that aren't read the way you would normally expect, regardless of whether the word itself is common or not.

the joyo kanji list also lists official readings for kanji too so joyo kanji used with a different reading that's not on the list might have furigana in official publications or newspapers.

i don't consider 10/10 ratings to mean something is "perfect", but even considering that i had to lower berserk and hxh from a 10 to a 9. does hxh have some of the greatest moments in anime? yea. is it the greatest shonen? yes and it's not close. but i can't ignore the pacing issues. the show starts off slow and doesn't reach peak shonen until a bit into yorknew which starts episode 39 in the 2011 version. that is so long that i can't even recommend it to someone like ciaran who would probably like the arc. the show is good before that but only about a 6 or 7/10 on average with a few episodes below (episode 1, 2, 6,10) and above (16, 20, 35) that. and as good as berserk 1997 is it's an incomplete story. still, they are strong 9s.

I really don't understand what the big issue is. 鬼滅の刃 is a good anime. It looks good, the characters are likable the setting is unique, our hero sets out with a clear goal, the subplots were interesting and all played a role in the overarching plot so none of it felt like a filler. I could go more in-depth about how it was good and why I liked it but I'm not a review writer and I don't think about these things much anyway.
What I really use as a basis for judging whether something is good or not is how my watching experience was. There is really two kinds of anime. One type of anime I have to force myself through and watch like 1-2 episodes a day. Those anime are trash. The other type of anime practically watch themselves because I'm just having fun and have a desire to continue watching. With those anime I finish 26 episodes in 1 or 2 days and that is the kind of anime 鬼滅の刃 was. Of course it will never hold up to LoGH but that's not exactly a bar you can reasonably set. An Anime like LoGH will simply never exist again, it is unique and so I don't see the point in drawing comparisons. The important thing for me when watching Anime is just having a good time.

And in the first place, making me a role model is incredibly gay. I simply learn Japanese to consume Japanese entertainment and have a good time. I'm sharing my anime cards method because I think it's really good and will help people learn and I'm glad when I can help people learn.
Why would I care about you deleting your anime cards? You shouldn't be doing them for me but use them as a tool to boost your own learning. If you do not feel like they help you you don't have to do them at all. It doesn't affect me in the slightest though no matter what you do.

you're right
try ripping the audio for something you've already watched, listen to it while reading along with the subs first, and then listen to it once a day for like a week after that, no transcript. your ability to hear will skyrocket. sticking to the same audio sample for a while and working on mastering that is way better for where you're at

You know I never actually thought I was very good at Japanese. Yeah I understand a lot and I can ready a lot and I am certainly better than the losers on DJT but there is also areas where I significantly lack in. I can enjoy pretty much everything Japanese without look ups so I already achieved the goal I set out with when I started and it's not like I have a real desire to reach complete native level like AJATT cucks so somewhere inside my mind I may have already reached end station which is why my motivation to seek out crazy shit to mine has kind of lowered recently together with my new card count. I don't even know if I am still improving because I feel like I am understanding just about everything and even if I miss something it doesn't even matter. I notice that the same is true in English actually. I paid attention to this a bit more recently and I actually do stumble upon new words in English that I pretty much more or less ignore because it doesn't even matter. I'd mine those words in Japanese however at least if they were voiced and who knows maybe that's kind of a waste of time that's what I've been wondering recently. I suppose rather than that what I want to say is that I am more continuing mining shit and doing Anki reviews as a sort of hobby rather than seeing it as a necessity to keep learning Japanese or feeling a real need to keep improving. I mean it's a fact that I can read a lot of kanji even native Japanese people can't I now have had the opportunity to compete with natives on the quiz a few times and the only areas where I may still get BTFO by an average native is either food items or possibly names but I think that in the first place it doesn't make sense to compare myself to a native because that is not what I am aiming for and ultimately I will naturally improve at those too. I really simply have the pure desire to continue consuming Japanese entertainment, be moved experiencing wonderful stories and be happy while also pursuing something I consider meaningful in my life. Actually I bought a cooking book recently and I'm going to try out some recipes the following week as I want to start eating more nutritiously so who knows as I am learning what the fuck Japanese food is I may also try to make some of it myself. Though nothing crazy like living octopus I don't think you can even get that shit here. Oh and just btw I think liking stories is pretty important trait to develop proper character and when I have children I hope to instill into them that characteristic. For example my brother only plays Roblox all day and has no character whatsoever, no ideals and no clue what goes on in the world. He really is barely human, just an NPC living in front of the screen and failing in all areas of life and it makes me kind of disappointed. I think it is also a lack of role models after all I don't go around prancing myself around but simply stay locked in my room learning and doing my studies. I've talked to him a few times about study techniques, I've gifted him books and just tried guiding him into the right direction but it really doesn't help. But enough about my brother I think what I wanted to stress was just the importance of stories and it's role in developing character and knowledge. I think most people would agree with that anyway. Really I think the main reason I will continue doing what I am now besides having a good time and enjoying stories is because I actually feel like I am being productive and doing something meaningful. You know when I watched anime with English subtitles it felt like a waste of time (and it partly was) but that changed it's like you're a smoker and all of a sudden smoking is actually discovered to be healthy and you can smoke as much as you want and smoking becomes free so you just smoke all day while getting more and more healthy. That's kind of how I feel about consuming Japanese entertainment right now. Anyway what I really want to say is that we should all keep striving to reach our goals and do our best learning this goddamn language and kick those Japs asses. Oh and I might just mention it but I haven't really given up on the kanken thing at all, I merely called off the bet because it felt kind of gay anyway and I don't care to see male ass. I'm still going to continue my kanken deck and if things go well I will in fact make it in time. Level 2 isn't really exactly hard and I already mentioned it before but I think learning to write has certain advantages for reading speed as well. After all every native made that experience and has that knowledge through school it is simply ignorant to assume that it doesn't play a role in reading ability. Of course this is different from RTK as RTK doesn't actually teach you to write Japanese no matter what cultists want you to believe and I really can't stress this point enough. How many beginners have been fooled into thinking they'll learn writing through RTK? I'll become an authority and disprove that nonsense

My personal philosophy is that a language is made up of words concatenated together with grammar rules. Thus the more words I know, the more varied sentences I can create. So I make it a point to memorize all of the vocab in Genki. For transparency, I do one chapter in 1-2 weeks, so Im not overloading myself with vocab each day. I have found this pace works for me so I dont burnout like the last time I attempted to learn Japanese. I also find this pace useful since I am also doing Wanikani/Kaniwani at the same time.

“Today, in part because of the amazing advances in neuroimaging, we can see pictures of how electrical impulses travel in the brain and what parts of the brain light up when we think, feel, or do certain things. We know how clever the brain is at learning to compensate for damage. We know that no matter how old we get, our brains are able to learn (thank goodness!)…creating new neuronal pathways. As the saying goes, ‘the neurons that fire together wire together.’ This can be good news and bad news. The good news is that people can be helped to have greater resilience by practicing skills that reinforce healthier pathways in the brain. The bad news is that remaining stuck in disabling beliefs, negative emotions, and hurtful practices wires dysregulation into the brain.”[7]

indeed as opposed to that anime cards are the real deal they give you maximum autonomy while providing the best results, you see MIA kids are the type of people that’d just get quantum computers and infinitely advance AI and kill everyone in the AI revolution because they just do it for the sake of it but for anime card kings every step forward happens with a clear goal in mind and it is a very firm step, the step of an adult man with a big heart and firm beliefs that’s what it means to be an anime carder

To be honest QM was onto something when he mentioned that people who don't read a lot of stories feel like NPCs. I think that most people live with inertia carrying them forward and don't grow much from their day to day lives, it's just a cycle of time-consuming brainless media (most TV shows, repetitive multiplyayer games like the battle royales, soshage, etc) while doing menial labor at work. This process affords them little opportunity to grow as people and just in general develop an appreciation for the profound, to put it in a fairly pretentious way.

In A Song of Ice and Fire, GRRM has a line that goes like: "A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies, but the man who never reads lives only one." I think this is a very legitimate interpretation of how reading enriches an individual. You can't entirely absorb the life experience of another by reading their autobiography, of course, no more so than you can read a book on shooting and immediately have perfect accuracy. But you can absorb a lot, and in very meaningful ways.

For example, a classic book known to be enriching is Marcus Aurelius's Meditations, and here is a choice selection from it: "The soul becomes dyed with the colour of its thoughts. The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts." This is the kind of wisdom it can take a lifetime for some people to learn. Some people can spend their entire lives without realizing the extent to which their mindset can impact the quality of their lives. But if one reads the Meditations and ponders the thoughts within, they can skip 50 years of life experience and ahead and learn the wisdom sooner.

This is just one example of course, and not one which will be universally convincing, depending on what you the reader already know or value. But in books and stories there is a vast pool of wisdom waiting to be absorbed cup by cup. We who drink from its splendor grow with every day, while those who don't stew in the cycles of regret, never living for anything in particular.

In my opinion, the importance of reading stories and or philosophy can never be overstated. In the process of observing my surroundings I see people consistently making the same mistakes that I have read of in books and thus avoided. Even my parents feel like children with their infantile understanding of relationships and each other. My mother in particular resisted the virtues I extolled to her day after day, fighting to continue being ignorant and unhappy with my father, much like a petulant child locking themselves in their room after being scolded.

Which leads me to the one danger of consuming stories in excess. You will become a higher being than your fellow man. You won't struggle to emphathize with them, as you will be overflowiong with wisdom and compassion. But you will struggle to care, much like Dr. Manhahattan in the Watchmen struggles to remain invested in the lives of humans. "I am so tired of Earth. These people. I am tired of being caught in the tangle of their lives." His apathy defines the mood which so deeply affects me and other ascended beings. Which you see and understand all, when other people are but characters in a poorly written play, caring about them becomes a task arduous beyond understanding.

I would move mountains sooner than I would descend to become involved with relationship drama befitting of teens, for instance, a lesson my parents have taught me well. Ah, but for an opportunity to meet one as splendid as Helen of Troy! Ah, but to have my own Hector to compete in virtuous combat for her hand! Alas, not even in ascension can one escape the shackles of mediocrity on Earth. Our plight is the plight of King Radical in Dr. McNinja, but perhaps more cruel for the fact that our cage is of our own making. Had we only trusted Thomas Gray when he spoke that when ignorance is bliss, 'tis folly to be wise.

So yes, in the end, I understand Quizmaster. I believe that reading is important in all forms, that through consuming stories and absorbing the wisdom contained therein we grow better as human beings, while those who don't fester in pathetic inaction born from inertial living. To live is to know, for knowledge is power, and they are as weak as they are foolish. May we all live strong and happy lives, my friends. May we learn from our books and stories and philosophy. May we live with virtue and fulfillment. Esse quam videri, ad astra per aspera, faber est suae quisque fortunae.

A couple days ago I posted about how I had just started reading yotsuba and felt hopeless with how difficult things were - today I sat down and read through the whole first chapter! But it's not as hard as you think. What you learn is just influenced by what you see.

If someone has no drive to independently consume Japanese for extended periods of time once they reach their intermediate level without being told to then they have no chance of learning Japanese in the first place. It's more important to not scare off beginners, who have no stamina and no frame of reference for how little effort it takes to consume a lot of Japanese at higher skill levels, than it is to tell people to do things that they're going to do anyways.

Also, "at least" does not mean "on average", and there's even a little note that says it should realistically be higher right there.

If you're watching Namasensei for anything other than the comedic value, you're doing it wrong.

His advice is bad, his pronunciation sucks, and some of his explanations are deeply misleading.

By all means, keep watching his videos if you enjoy them, but don't take them seriously. They cover very little at the end of the day so you will need to move on to some other grammar resource once you're done.

>just wondering if there are better ways going forward.
It's hard to imagine what could be much worse than what you're already doing. At least you aren't paying for classes, I guess.

Depending how much you manage to get out of Duolingo and Namasensei, you might be able to move onto Visualizing Japanese Grammar quite seamlessly once you're finished with both of those. You will find yourself feeling a bit clueless to some degree with any grammar resource, but if you find yourself really, really clueless with VJG and can't understand anything, maybe try Japanese the Manga Way instead (I didn't use it but I've heard nothing but good things about it). As an alternative to JtMW, there's also Sakubi (haven't used), Boiro (haven't used) and Tae Kim (did use and didn't like). Steer well clear of stupidly long resources like Imabi and the DoJG deck.

Anyway, try not to waste too much time on grammar, and don't get worked up when you don't understand things (this goes for now and later); it's totally normal. You want to try and get grammar out of the way as quickly as possible so you can move onto immersion (i.e. reading and listening to Japanese content made by and for native speakers).

Guy who wrote the long-ass post here and I've finished 250~ VNs and 50~ books in Japanese with lots more good stuff waiting for me, if you think most things are bad you're either being needlessly critical or your IQ is too low to enjoy reading. It's hard to beat 30 years of fairly consistent output, Elf for example has a lot of old classics and made some interesting nukige but it's hard to deny they had a sharp decline.

Rikaichamp is a recreation of Rikaichan (I think it's actually forked from Rikaikun, which itself is a fork of Rikaichan for Chrome). The original Rikaichan died when Firefox moved to the new, Chrome-like add-on API.

Yomichan started out, I think, as an alternative to Rikaisama which worked quite differently while offering many of the same features. When Firefox moved to the new add-on API, Yomichan became the defacto replacement for Rikaisama.

There's also Nazeka, which I think was made from scratch. It's basically intended to be a replacement for the now-dead Rikiasama, which unlike Yomichan works much the same way as its predecessor did.

don't know man everyone learns reading through reading but that kind of stuff like 魔物 as まぶつ, or 招待 as しょうじ just sounds like you read without really knowing Japanese and possibly just making shit up, probably just crippling yourself in that feedback loop you mentioned
but anyway if you actually read through all the hard chuuni VNs I don't see how you wouldn't do amazing on the quiz, at least if you actually read them and didn't just conciously skip everything you didn't understand because I am getting the impression that is what a lot of VN readers do
especially people saying things like they are reading without subvocalization just makes me think they aren't really reading and just moving their eyes over the text and then progressing the line
and skipping through a hundred VNs isn't really a feat worth anything
what I'm trying to say is if you read Japanese and it actually lead to some sort of skill building in terms of Japanese knowledge and reading ability the quiz should be easy and the only people who are afraid of it are people like Jamal who fear being exposed

It's simply the result of reading mostly in silence with little to no audio feedback - I read fast enough that I skip voice acting rather than wait for it to finish, books naturally don't have voice acting, scripts don't have voice acting, and so on. Misreading kanji doesn't have any relation to comprehension of the text itself, except when the reading is used in a pun or whatever, and it's surprisingly common even for Japanese people. If you watch some livestreams you'll see some meme-tier stuff like 村長 being read as むらちょう. This kind of thing is just what happens with kanji, and it's equivalent to English speakers mispronouncing words due to having only ever read them.

That said, yes, I'm being extremely humble, learn to recognize fucking 社交辞令の謙遜 you bitch.

surprised me honestly. shes like 40. during the minutes it took her to search it up (no dictionary app on her phone, using those bulky japanese dictionary sites + the weird japanese keypad input vs romaji) i couldn't bring myself to tell her i already know that it was まもの.

and the thing is those are native people do you know how they achieved fluency? not by looking at text all day and making up readings but actually listening to a shit ton of Japanese and the reading ability of those japs that don't read a lot is a direct consequence or rather a direct portrayal of them just using their verbal language knowledge to decipher the text

a Japanese person would never misread any of the words you mentioned above and it just kind of makes me think you don't even have a conception of how much Japanese people know or a real idea of how language is acquired in the first place, not to mention that the more you post the more I think you are crippled and don't really know Japanese being one of those people looking at the text and scrolling the text

It's really interesting looking at something like Core6k stats in isolation over a year after finishing it. Really just won't go 100% mature and I think that is due to the speed I review at occasionally causing me to fail something not because I forgot it but because I gave the wrong answer due to being too fast.
