Alice couldn't fight with much heart after that. Who could have blamed her? Her downfall was the next day. While Suika Ibuki had held Reimu down, Keine Kamisharasawa beat Alice to a pulp. She and Akyu Hieda then simply chanted a few lines of verse, and just like that, Alice was wiped from history. All that was left was Shanghai. Suika grabbed the doll and tossed it to Cirno who had been standing behind Keine. Reimu could tell something was wrong with the ice fairy. Her eyes were unfocused, and she moved like a robot. In a moment, she picked a large wooden club off the ground and swung at the incoming doll like it was a baseball. It exploded in a gory mess, leaving crimson spots all over the fairy. "Good girl," Keine had told Cirno before Reimu was knocked unconscious.

She could feel they icy smoothness against her wrists slick with sweat. After several moments, the memories began to return...

The Halloween celebration, the eclipse, the conflagration of the shrine, yin-yang orbs smashed to pieces. It seemed as if all the world could be heard weeping. Tears stung Reimu's eyes as her recollection of the last few days continued their macabre march through her mind. She fled, with Marisa and Alice, to find the culprit. And after that, an endless series of fights. It seemed as if all the antagonists they had ever squared off against had gathered to take them on now, with a new and strange malice.

Marisa's fate came first. Encapsulated within a ball of darkness by Rumia (whose hair ribbon had been missing), the human magician was disoriented, and her attempts to escape the abyssal blackness failed. Trapped in their own dark confines, Reimu and Alice could only hear their longtime ally be torn apart by the sickly-sweet Flandre Scarlet, finally released from her imprisonment of half a century. Alice's silence in the midst of Marisa's furiously defiant howls was what had disturbed Reimu the most. They had felt great waves of energy as Marisa tried one last Master Spark from within the darkness, but Flandre had apparently dodged it with a giggle. "See you losers later" had been the irreverent last words of the dying Marisa.
