would you guys be interested in a program where you can store texts that you have read in the past as to be able to compare it to a text that you are looking to read. The idea would be to be able to gauge how difficult or easy a new text would be to read. It could give you a percentage of known words or something like that. Could also suggest new things to read based on what you know. Would this sound interesting?

Khatzumoto himself:
AJATT can and, left unattended, will become a cult or cult-like if you follow it to the letter (and humor alone will not save the day). You don’t have to be a male genital organ about it, but never withdraw your right to give me, or any idea I share with you, the figurative finger. More importantly, never stop reading other people’s ideas, many of which will be bad and bad for you, yes, but some of which will be good. In a way, the cure for bad information is more information, especially random, weird, outside-the-“outside-the-box”-box, serendipity-prone information. That is, not merely an increase in information quantity (which, by itself, actually starts to be bad for you relatively quickly), but an increase in the number of different qualities of information — the spread, if you will…basically, ecleticism.

Aside from music, the only audio I get is from watching Nihongo no Mori videos (n2 grammar videos atm) and for those I need to rewind to understand something like once every 5 videos, and pause to look up a word like twice per video.
Is my problem fairly common and I can just keep doing this and my listening comprehension will get better, or do I actually have to find something else to listen to, and if so any recommendations?
Every time Ive tried to commit to some non-music audio I find it to be such a chore and get burnt out on it.

Hate to break it to you but music is basically worthless as a learning resource. Singing sounds very different from speaking, and lyrics seldom tell any sort of coherent story.

If looking up every single word is too much of a hassle for you when listening to other content, then don't do it. Try just looking up words when you come across a line that you really want to understand, and otherwise being content with understanding however much you naturally understand.

It's a good idea to do some reading to supplement this though. Let's say you choose to watch seasonal anime, you can then read the source material for the shows you like after they finish.

say what you want, I've done 99% passive listening for 1 year and it worked great. At first everything was just white noise, i could pick out 5 words 私、食べる、飲む、走る、です,which makes things really fun to try and actively listen. I will never understand how people will watch anime or anything else while understanding 10% or less unless their doing anime cards, it only starts to become fun when you understand 90% and even then its probably not that much fun, might aswell just watch with english subs. I took the extremely lazy route, I believed in the magic khatz was telling people and I've seen it develop over time. After a year I could watch most animes, youtube channels and nhk news fine without any issues, how much effort do you think I put in for listening? every now and then the passive audio is just like that feeling you get when you've heard a song too much times so you have to put up something else, more than that not really any effort. this anwser will probably not satisfy you

I said 100% because that's what it feels like in terms of comprehension, but there is still plenty of things I don't know and I do feel like I still have things to learn, as in I'm not on a near native level. Just a level where passing N1 would be very easy. And as I have done nothing but consume Japanese entertainment the last few years it has become my standard form of entertainment, whether I consider it learning or not.
Besides, this wasn't necessarily exclusive to consuming Japanese entertainment, but just a general feeling of not wanting to do literally anything. I wanted to do some programming and read a book both of with I have put off for weeks now.

Just spend a few minutes thinking about learning/studying Japanese. Come up with some limitations and goals that would make it interesting. Whenever I was at home I'd listen passively, I was never really busy just lazy, I feel that I could've gotten way more out of it if I just did actively too but I just didn't enjoy it that much honestly.

You may laugh, I'm not a good translator since I never do it but here I'll try:
When the great earthquake had finally subsided, it seems that the people that had evacuated outside had a sudden feeling of fondness for each and another. (人懐かしい idk how to translate it. ) The people, without questioning each other or having problems with each other, they talked to each other closely, shared tabacco and pears, protected the children of each other. This scene was seen in watanabechou, tahashi, kamiakarichou and in almost every other place.

I understood the text fine but I don't know the readings of 渡辺町、田端、神明長 and the expression was something I have never seen, altough I think it means something about the lines of not discerning which people you are close to. Especially in this context, since after the disaster their drama and problems with each other would of course be non-existant and they'd be happy to talk to each other.

i just re-watched 7 episodes off the air (2005) anime after finishing 2 routes from the vn. here's what i noticed:
1) the vocabulary in the anime dialogue was much simpler than the one in the vn (probably because most of the "difficult" words were in the descriptions), even though i couldn't understand the scenes set in the ancient time period.
2) it was a mess gobbled up out of several routes from the vn.
3) seeing everything animated, voiced made everything feel a lot more dramatic than in the vn. when people think of key forced drama, they usually think of the kyoani anime adaptations, not of the vns themselves.
4) seeing the protagonist's face and body around the screen makes everything feel so impersonal.

>I wanna know if duoling is at least a decent place to start
Duolingo is cancer. It is by far the worst resource for learning Japanese there is. You would unironically learn more Japanese from learning Chinese than using duolingo.
Duolingo supposedly teaches many languages, and it does (not do) this by making all its courses as cookie cutter as possible.

Let me give you an example, if duolingo wanted to teach you the expression "it can't be helped", they wouldn't teach you "しょうがない", they would teach you some shit like "kore wa tetsudau ja nai", because duolingo isn't made for Japanese or its nuances it would just give you a literal translation that's probably wrong that is never used and wouldn't make any sense if you said it.

If you want to learn any language you need to seek out specific resources for that language, from Spanish to Russian to Arabic to Japanese, if you use "services" that offer multiple languages it's always going to be some soulless pointless waste of time because it isn't optimized for the language you're trying to learn.

Yeah its defintely hard as many people think they got it everything figured out themselves, even if presented with evidence that that is not the case. Your pretty good and its obvious you know better compared to them. What you could do is go to that study session every time, and just drop subtle hints every now and then about how their method sucks and that they're progressing slowly and probably aren't really getting good in a small period of time but also that the good stuff they think they will reach will probably never happen if they don't take the dive. And that doing more manga and reading will help them improve way faster. The seed will get planted at that point. After the seed is planted you just have to make sure it grows in a nice healthy flower that blooms all year long, and in order to make that happen you do some repetition like the above anon said about the weightlifting thing, you drop that every time when your with them subtly, and in a couple of weeks they will agree and probably focus more on what you then recommend them doing.

the big brained way of doing these core/beginner decks is to only test yourself on readings
you should of course try to remember the meaning of the word, but you should never fail a card based on not knowing the meaning, because you'll remember the meaning much more easily when you see the word used in context while reading
trying to remember the meanings of words in a vacuum is a waste of time

i came to a similar conclusion when i started latin.
did a vocab deck to supplement my reading and noticed that, all the vocab that is not easily "deducable" from ones we commonly use today is fucking hard to memorize, and if i got it temporarily i would lose it again when the intervall got to like 4-5 days.
meanwhile, the stuff that was new to me that i come across in my reading sticks easily. that's why i decided to delete the vocab deck, it was completely pointless. meanings are way more efficiently aquired through seeing the word used.

tldr:
i think vocab decks are pointless for language learning
they are still useful for japanese because you need to learn how to actually read the words, a problem which you don't have with languages like latin, spanish, german, etc., but you should only focus on getting the reading right

besides, you could argue it's actually incredibly helpful to watch something in japanese which you've already seen in another language, because now that you know what's going on the japanese will be much more comprehensible.

i suppose that actually has some interest in learning japanese for the sake of reading vns and lns will already know hundreds of words and have watched hundreds or thousands of anime, so anybody should be ready to read よつばと! right from the moment they learn hiragana. otherwise, they wouldn't even have a reason for learning hiragana.
