Danbooru forces you to buy their shit to get what gelbooru offers for free. You have to buy their shitty gold pass crap to see hidden (available on gelbooru 80% of the time) art pieces and have the ability (that gelbooru has for free) to use more than one tag.
Danbooru also makes money off of other artists work that they do not own, none of which goes to said artists.
Gelbooru lacks only in translated works and a tagging system though I think this means the pool shit you see on OYP. A pool for smiles, a pool for guro on top of the already established normal tags.

It has plenty of caveats, but for power users who are willing to put in the effort to curate their own collection, it's the least terrible option out there.

Two of the most interesting features, IMHO, are the automated. filtered scrapers for most relevant sites, and the option for users to contribute and obtain tags from other users. It also works for media outside of images, so it can be applied to virtually all of your media.

I don't use it myself anymore, since I can't be arsed, but I know people who are able to utilize it quite effectively.

It is really unfortunate hydrus catalogues image files by their checksum instead of a visual fingerprint. A checksum is easy to change without actually changing the picture, for example, by removing the EXIF data from a JPEG. Image tagging will remain imperfect while it is so brittle, and still I don't see any booru use anything other than simple file checksums.
