More specialized, and also lewder and more coherent, probably a single program instead of many independent generators. A big difficulty with procedurally generated content is making it all cohere together. You'd need every part of the world to reflect the premise while not being identical, the girls to harmonize with their part of the world, the various parts of the backstory to not clash (you don't want questions like "Why didn't they just use the magic artifact from the neighboring kingdom?") and so on.

Nothing 2D remains because they are easy targets to get into without needing much investment unlike stuff like idols or Japanese music, but that is more and more not the case with the catering to international tastes.

VNs used to be obscure and were probably the last "hidden subculture/niche" if you will, but they got brought into the limelight by ironic weebs, who continually keep on ruining stuff. I still wish that wasn't the case, and I contend that the opening up of stuff like that and Japan in general led to a lot of stuff taking a hit to quality. For me, Touhou music has gotten worse since 2012-2013 after almost half a decade of good stuff from around 2006 onwards. You don't see good artists like Cytokine or Mohican Sandbag anymore.

Vocabulary wasn't really part of it, that has always been a problem with some of the official translations that love to be very liberal with their translations.

More the fact was the genre and interest of which VNs got attention was shifted with the influx of people who wanted to read charage/moege because they read Higurashi or a Key VN. There was a nice mix of stuff out there that had fan translations but that preference slanted things in the direction that smaller VN publishers who wanted to bring stuff over started catering to that taste. It's not much of an issue if you know Japanese but it warps the perception for people who only know English.

So you get a situation where some obscure stuff like Suigetsu which were okay/great which won't get anything but literal bottom of the barrel stuff like Nekopara can release on Steam and get people piling on top of each other to give it money.

The other bad thing which is slightly related is the amount of fan translated media has gone down significantly since its heydeys in the early 2000s. You barely see any fansubs or translated VN efforts anymore, as no one wants to give out stuff for free because the culture of consumption as opposed to creating and the amount of effort rewarded for doing either.

Crunchyroll might even have saved subs, because there are more than every now and you can expect most things to get subbed and maybe some fansubbers will hit the obscure stuff. Honestly the second wave of anime being cool has passed some years ago and by now you should have just learned Japanese or accept what you get in (your language).

Probably that they can just get a job now doing the same thing. The culture of consumption instead of creation is nothing new though, it's half of why we have no anime based doujin culture. (the other half is undue elitism). As much as I hate patreon and stuff, it's actually sort of promoting the existence of such a culture more than it has existed until now.
