There's a demo of DJMax Respect for the PS4, grab that. It has very good, popish music and doesn't require a special controller.
Otherwise, if you're looking into playing something with a controller, look up the location of a Round 1 arcade near you and play some of the rhythm games there. Most Bemani (Konami music games) games can be found there, and are available on PC with varying degrees of legality. 3rd party controllers are also available.
As for getting good, playing as many songs as possible is the fastest way to get good. There are other tips specific to each game (see: random in IIDX), but the best thing to do is to not just grind out one song over and over. Self improvement is the best thing about this genre, and just memorizing one chart isn't going help you with any other one.

Yearly bemani crossover event soon

>> No.22045079

>>22044809
I disagree. It's not that Osu isn't as "cool as my 20 year old weeb game", it has major problems that lead to bad habits, mainly pertaining to the PP system. Hell, even as a pedestrian view of the genre, one of the biggest appeals to me was checking out all of the original high quality tracks and the sense of accomplishment clearing a chart would give me. Clearing 1:30 anime openings with a mouse and keyboard got boring after a couple of hours. Clearing BrandNewDays 4b for the first time in DJMax years later cemented my love for the genre

>> No.22045101

>>22045079
Also Osu!Mania is garbage and still has next to no maps, Taiko's readily available on most modern consoles and done better, and Catch the Fruit is a meme that could have been alright if anyone gave a shit.

I view osu differently. I saw osu as another way to enjoy my 1:30 anime openings and vocaloid songs and I got what I wanted. Playing multiplayer let me discover different songs and some of those were fun. If I went back to see some of the challenge maps now I may just give up and dismiss them as stupid but back then they were a challenge and I had a blast trying to clear them.
osu is the most casual gateway into enjoying the high of chart clearing; in a good way. If you like that high, you will seek it out elsewhere as well. If you don't, then you probably wouldn't enjoy rhythm games.

When I started playing osu, I couldn't clear AbstractNonsense and it was my tippy-top goal to clear it. After four years of playing, it's ironic that finally clearing it was what made me lose interest and uninstall.
It was fun while it was.

Taikojiro if you prefer functionality over aesthetics. Jiro is also the more "standard" and "competitive" alternative of the two, being the standard used in many Jiro scales created in the Japanese community.

>> No.22063845

How do people obtain arcade machines? I'm assuming that most private owners buy them but for businesses, are they leased and maintained by another company? Or are they bought and in-house techs have to learn how to maintain and repair them?

>> No.22063948

>>22063845
Can be either. A larger arcade is typically going to buy its own machines from a distributor like BMI Gaming or Betson and employ their own techs. Smaller businesses such as a bowling alley or pizza place might pay a vendor to put machines on location. The arcade vendor would then be responsible for maintenance of the games.

>> No.22065752

>>22063845
>>22063948
This is becoming less and less true as arcades are operating at slim margins and so the cheapest way going forward has been for operators to buy stuff at auction and cut out the middleman. Companies that don't do this either fail or earn all of their profits through other means, like selling goods/food and beer. What was previously reserved for big box stores at the beginning of the millennia has become readily accessible to little barcades etc. thanks to the proliferation of the used market. This also means that all of the machines are likely old and poorly maintained.

Designed it in CAD, had a local shop laser it and bend it out of aluminum, I machined some other parts for it (blocks in the corners to hold the springs and corner pieces that hold the arrows in) and bent/welded/assembled the backbar. As for skill level (or absence of it), to put numbers on it, my best score on bubble pop is like 80%. I have almost 250000 arrows played on this pad without any visible wear or maintenance required so I'm pretty happy. I guess time will tell if it starts to break down later but so far so good.
