It is very incomplete and even has some wrong info. I saw that section and it seems it was written by someone taking my old anime cards guide, removing all the info they deemed unnecessary and then rewriting some sections for no good reason. I want to write an all in one retard proof guide that I can link to knowing I won't have to answer any more questions.

the idol guy is dreamin about a real person he doesnt know and will never meet and the 2d guy is dreamin about an immortal futa loli succubus harem no problem distinguishing fiction from reality
im sayin the 2d guy has more room in his head to consider hangin out with a real human being without his fantasy in the way because his fantasy isnt about a real human being

>im sayin the 2d guy has more room in his head to consider hangin out with a real human being
yeah i get your point, but i believe the 2d guy has less desire to hang out with a human being while that desire is evident in the 3d guy
and then it depends on whether the 3d guy is dead set on a specific person he will never meet in which case he is also doomed
or whether he can abstract from his desire of an idol to a desire of a human females in general, in which case i believe he is in a much better position than the 2d guy
i think we'll just have to agree to disagree

repetition that's extremely irregular which means taking unnecessarily longer to learn any given thing, and that requires you to look up whatever it is you want to learn repeatedly which is often distracting and breaks flow. anything memorized via anki is a lookup saved later.

You should make a reddit post with a title like "On Anki Cards and Retention Rates", and then write down something like
"Good evening, fellow redditors.
I have recently speculated, based partly on my own experience, that making anki with a piece of context in the back (such as an audio clip or a transcript of a sentence where a word was spotted) can significantly aid in increasing one's retention rate, by tying different parts of one's memory.
It is my belief that cards with a word in front take less time to review than cards with an entire sentence, since one needs to only focus on looking at, and therefore umambiguously recalling one pair of pieces of information (which, in this case, is one word, as displayed in kanji, and both its reading and meaning), so as to not trouble the mind with having to reinterpret and reconstruct an entire sentence's context-specific meaning over and over. As part of my personal experience, I would like to offer the following statistics from my anki collection. For the sake of not falling into pure irrational faith-based dogmatism, I would very much pleased to see if you could kindly allow me to look at your anki statistics, along with a brief description of the kind of cards you've been using, so as to see how well my hypothesis might stand up against factual evidence.
Thank you very much giving me a moment of your time.
Yours trully, qm"

sentence cards take like 10 seconds to make. Copy the sentence, put the unknown word and its translation or definition on the back with furigana. >sentence cards force you to see the word used in a proper context (grammatical and in terms of meaning) which is going to help you with production down the line

I doubt that is true. You are seeing them in one context that you have previously seen them in before rather than a number of contexts which would actually let you see a pattern and reinforce usage so I think the answer is consuming more.
Now assuming this is true, audio cards would still be superior because after doing the word card you simply read/listen to the context on the back and you'd gain the same benefits.

>their creation is extremely quick
I have not seen somebody create a sentence card really quickly. Can you show me a video of somebody making a full sentence card?

>if you know the rest of the sentence the meaning is often clear just from that
I'm not sure what you mean by that. You will gain a certain amount of predictive ability merely by consuming more and gaining more experience with the language. Sentence cards have nothing to do with that. If you mean you know the answer to your cards before finishing reading it, then that is a huge disadvantage. You are not reviewing in an authentic environment that tests whether you actually recalled the relevant piece of information, but merely recall a scene you have previously seen.

>during reviews you only have to think about whether you understand the sentence or not
Same with audio cards. In fact it's even simpler because you only need to think about whether you knew the meaning for 1 word and the reading for 1 word rather than an entire sentence. With sentence cards testing yourself on the sentence meaning is harder because you are always getting assistance from the one context you have seen before and will never see again.

This has a really narrow view born from being a beginner. Common words (maybe the core 10,000 words?) all pop up enough that there won't be months between them if you read consistently. To be clear, I', talking about words like 発表, 環境, etc. Not uber common words like "日", but part of the core 10,000 words that are used 95% of the time or whatever. You'll see them daily if you're reading a decent amount, yet they are overwhelmingly what people use anki to grind. It's more like
first encounter "whats this? lets look it up"
1 day later "what was this again? looks it up"
2 day later "there it is again, I know it"
3 day later "there it is again, I know it"
4 day later "there it is again, I know it"
5 day later *understanding it so intuitively no attention is drawn to it*
(continue on into infinite)

For words more "rare" that you might indeed see it only once a month, like maybe 天譴, your fears are unfounded on the grander scale. First, you'll know almost every word around them, so guessing from context/tone is easy. Don't even need to look them up. Second, kanji provide more than enough clues in most cases to figure the meaning of the word out intuitively - a lot of more uncommon vocabulary in Japanese are just compounds like 病根 which don't warrant looking up or grinding in anki. Third, your examples only go up to 2 months, but that's bitch baby tier. As you grow as a reading adult with years of experience, you'll see these words a hundred times naturally even if they only show up once a month. Finally, truly rare words such as 莞爾 or 吝嗇 are so uncommon you might only see them once or twice and your life anyway. Suffice to say there's no point grinding them as flashcards so you can be prepared for the few moments in your life when you see them, no less than you would grind rare English vocabulary that you haven't encountered yet.

tl;dr Your post is very clearly coming from a position of a beginner trying to justify his beliefs, despite lacking the actual life experience necessary to know whether he's right or not.

This is the kind of thing that's best left as fuzzy data. It's hard to describe how much time people in DJT waste obsessing over minute stats, and it's already poisoning your thoughts with "minimum amount I should be reading" etc. The key to language learning is "don't think, feel". If I were to give a recommended minimum amount of reading a day it would be in hours anyway. 1 hours a day for busy people or people who don't actually care about Japanese media, 3 hours a day for people with free time, and 6-8 hours for NEETs.

damn same man. i don't mind it for reading stuff, but for anime it's so annoying having to pause and rewind 5 or more times an episode. i'm starting to think learning japanese is worth it for reading stuff (VN's, manga, LNs) but not really for anime. takes so much to be able to understand anything outside of slice of life 100% without any subs or lookups.

what does it mean if i watch anime with english subtitles but still catch a lot of things in japanese? i just learned the word 神出鬼没 a few days ago from a book, and while watching an eng sub anime just now, i heard a character use it. people say watching with english subs is useless, you won't get anything out of it, your brain will only read the english and block out everything else. but is that really true if i was able to easily hear a japanese word i just learned on the first pass through without even trying?

Try watching with Japanese subs, or with japanese and English subs at the same time. Don't just use English subs because your brain will filter out what they say.

Try watching a show in English with English subs. You'll find yourself focusing on the subtitles more than the actual show, despite you understanding and hearing what they say your brain will filter it out. It's like reading a book in a crowded room, your brain focuses on words first.

Well there's two major reasons:
Most other countries that aren't America/Australia/Britain still teach English as a mandatory subject in school, and most of those people speak languages more similar to English than En<->JP so watching those shows would essentially be free, comprehensible English exposure with a translation at the bottom for verification (unlike you, the JP-subbed anime watcher who has to potentially learn the meaning of the words, learn to hear the the words, and learn to read them all in the same go)

There is a fork of ShareX for Linux called ShareNix:
https://github.com/Francesco149/sharenix

The installation process is a bit weird in that rather than building a package, it involves copy-pasting stuff to system folders and then changing permissions on the files, but it looks easy enough to follow.

If you're on Void Linux then it appears there's an official package in the repos there, and it's also carried in the AUR if you're on Arch. Looks like no other distros have any kind of support for installing it as a package though as of right now.

Installation is simple, you can just run yay -S sharenix-git or trizen -S sharenix-git
This is why arch is the best. You can package everything for it by writing a simple pkgbuild file.

Matt from MIA has talked about how an obsessive approach is pretty key to be great at Japanese. You can't half-ass it and expect good results.

In my own observation, the key features of people who have successfully learned Japanese are:

They are obsessed and have an almost pathological level of discipline (e.g., staying up all night to finish repping Anki cards)
They are young enough that they had massive free time AND the advantages of a young brain that can better acquire foreign language.
As an aside, regarding the "young brain" thing, I think this is hugely underplayed in the Japanese learning community, including AJATT. I understand why people don't discuss it: Nobody can go back in time and start studying earlier. But let's acknowledge that most near-native speakers (including Matt) exposed themselves to Japanese by their mid-teens. It's no surprise, as I can often tell at about which age a foreign speaker of English came to the US (huge difference between someone who comes here at 16 yr old vs someone who comes here at 21 yr)

Back to the original point, yesterday I watched an interview between Matt and an AJATTer where the guy was saying he had to scale back his Anki efforts because he was making him unwell. Personally, I dislike Anki, and if I committed to it then I would be increasing my already unhealthy levels of screentime, so I don't. However, I do daily passive and active immersion.

So I'm wondering:

Can any "normal" human do AJATT and achieve good results? Or is it an "all or nothing" thing where you have to live and die by Anki, do 4 hours of active and 8+ hrs of active immersion a every single day, etc.?

Thanks for the great response!

3 hours of active + 3 hours passive is do-able, at least for now, though I am still pretty insistent on not doing SRS. I just can't get myself to stare at my phone or PC screen for any longer than I already do - it might be different if I didn't have a job.

I'm 41 yrs old, though at least I had the good fortune of being able to study in Japan when I was 20-21 yrs old. So at least I had some early-ish exposure and achieved a solid intermediate level there. Only in the past year have I decided to seriously study again (oh, and I'm going on a 9 day trip to Japan in a couple weeks!). Thanks for the examples of people who started later in life - I will watch later today (at work now).

People who are 16, 17 or 18 still have an advantage over people who are older. I've met people who didn't study English until 16 and have a native-like accent. Someone who starts at 25 can be easily understood and obtain great proficiency, but it will always have an accent and will still tend to make mistakes that sound weird to natives. I also think it's no coincidence that most of the speakers who truly excel had exposure during high school vs. those of us whose first exposure came in college. Check out the YouTube channel "Sama- sensei to eikaiwa" (the YouTube channel title is in Japanese, but sorry, no Japanese keyboard at work) for an example of some really excellent Japanese from someone who started self-study young and then went to Japan in HS - she is a nice video in Japanese where she explains her journy. Then there's Matt from MIA, Tim Ferris, and the other Youtubers whose names I don't know off the top of my head. Not sure when Dogen started though.

25 is around when people start having their first kid, so I doubt they'd have as much free time as a 16 year old student. That's an obvious disadvantage.
You didn't mention how old each person was when you met them either, and if they were all 30 then the 16 year old would have been studying English for 14 years while the 25 year old would have been studying it for 5.
