I would't say it felt depressing or sad, at least for me, there were a lot of small karaokes and old shops, and it seemed a very familiar atmosphere (for the locals, ofc) but it definetly did feel decadent

Far from it! It was actually near the main station in a medium sized town, adjacent to a street with a lot of traffic. Some shops at the ends of the shotengai (those that were also facing to the outside road) were in fact open. Some of the stores inside seemed to be being used as warehouses.
I can search the place later, a guy actually walked inside with one of those 360º cameras, so you could actually walk it in google street view.

It was really comfy, but that was also a really lucky shot. Wasn't as crowded as Kyoto or Nikko during busy season, but was still crowded enough that it was hard to find a shot with no people.

Yup, that's basically it.
Most of the time it's the hostess singing to cheer and entertain the customers, until someone decides they're ready and try so sing something on their own.
They usually sing like shit, even tho karaoke is such a common entertainment there lmao
I stared at one of those doors for a few seconds to decide if I wanted to have a beer, then an old man gestured me to enter, bought me a drink and asked me where I was from.
Then proceeded to tell me (in very broken english) what he knew about my country, just the most topic thinks you can think of, and a couple of famous football players from my country that recently moved to Japanese teams...
I also tried to sutter the very few phrases I knew in japanese, then he clapped and laughed, it was fun

I must add, at least in this particular place, most of these small karaoke bars were chinese-owned, with chinese or korean hostesses.
Later I read that some Japanese are concerned that this is pushing traditional businesses/shops out, and causing the triads to gain more influence in some parts of Osaka, aggravated by the weakness of local Yakuza, caused by strong police pressure in recent years.
Dunno if this is really true, just telling you what I read (I mean, (I could see that, indeed, most of the hostesses where chinese, tho)

I didnt go into any of those places... I would have felt really awkward. But whenever I'm in Osaka I stay near as the there are a couple of cheap, decent hotels and I just need a place to sleep at night.

Did you go into any of the Tamade supermarkets in your pictures? The exteriors are so flashy and bright, and inside there are cheap groceries and also plenty of Chinese staff.

Havent been back for a few years but last time in Japan there were so many Chinese working in restaurants, hotels, retail, etc.

I don't remember an F-16 coming last year, so it's probably just a variety thing.
They had an F-4 like this flying around at the beginning of the show. But it seems I was wrong about Blue Impulse's previous planes. They've been in the T-4 for a while now, and before it was the T-2.

Well, it felt awkward for me too, but funny nonetheless.
I also met two friends, one colombian student and one laosian-american soldier who was stationed in Okinawa base. This guy was crazy, very short, strong-fat, shaved bald with the roundest head you can inagine.... he wouldn't shut up about how much he liked latina girls, and how crazy they were... We talked a lot a shared some food
He said americans at the base are mostly islolated from real Japanese culture, so mainland Japan was something new to him

About tamade, I got into the one in the pic only once or twice, because small convivis were faster, and a neaby donki had much more stuff... I didn't realise the staff was chinese, but I did notice they were less helpful and even a bit rude, so it makes sense...

During winter, you can take a train from this station that has an old style stove in it, as well as traditional music being performed. The station is next to a cafe that was once the ol station. Kind of famous in Aomori.

Here's some Rapeseed (Nanohana) flowers in bloom during the Nanohana Festival in Yokohama-machi, Aomori. Notice the wind farms in the back, they're all over the coast of Aomori. Pays extremely well in the states if you ever want to get into being a technician.

This is the Mutsu JMSDF base in Mutsu, Aomori. Small town, but lots of bars (they've even got an anime themed bar) and close to the northern most point of Honshuu (hour north, Cape Ooma).

It is pretty, but I do think the scaffolding has its own appeal. The picture itself could have been nicer, that was a much older phone camera and everything beyond the shrine got whitewashed by the sun. There were still some cherry blossoms as well, but most were gone by that point.

I don't think so, theres literally a fuckton of shotengais all over the place, of course, the tendency is of a slight decline, but still...
The big difference is that the typical residential area aren't neighborhoods full of big flat buildings, unlike in most of europe, where there's a very high population concentration... Typical japanese residential areas are vast suburbs full of small monofamilar houses with their own yards.
Big ass stores and malls arent viable there, with such a low population concentrarion and almost no public transport to move inside the neighborhood, these comercial streets full of small,old (often VERY old) familiar businesses are the norm.
I guess they are somewhat simmilar to suburbs in the USA, but there everyone gets onto their bigass pickup and drive to the nearest bigass wallmart.
In Europe, even in small towns people live in concentrated flat blocks, malls and big supermarkets are viable, because there are thousands of people nearby that can go by foot.... So small familiar businesses are doomed

The school had windows everywhere and so was well lit from all places, dind't have an specially spooky feel.
It's just that people who enter these abandoned places as a hobby like to arrange things in such ways to take their spooky photos... like wheelchairs in the middle of a corridor, an old tv in front of a lonely chair in the center of an empty room, etc... At least they usually won't vandalize or steal things, that's mostly on the randoms that stumble on these places
