I have multiple dolls. 6 so far, working on a 7th because I have some floating heads and an unused torso, but Volks has not stocked MDD wrist joints in months so I haven’t ordered any of the other parts I need to assemble one. I have enough heads for another 4 but I think I will probably sell some of the heads rather than buy more bodies. Money isn’t really the concern for me so much as space is. These dolls are huge.

You worry too much anon, vinyl dolls are pretty hardy. Stains are inevitable and yellowing will happen one way or the other. Just try to enjoy them as they are and go for it... that said, I do recommend getting a Neemo or another lower-price doll first to see how much you like the hibby before going all-in.

That depends, if you make your dolls from scratch (buy standard base bodies, wigs, and all your clothes seperately), then you can manage to get by using Mandarake and Ebay to buy cheap used parts until you can assemble yourself a doll for around $500. If you go for licensed character dolls then you can potentially end up dropping thousands of dollars or more if you try to get them on the after market.

I've gotten a few heads off of yja and I've also commissioned a number of faceups from artists. In the former case it's much easier to know what you're going to get, at least if there's hi-res photos attached to the auction. In the latter case you're likely ok if you commission someone who has a reputation for doing good work, though generally you get what you pay for. If you pay $100 for a commission (excluding the head) then you'll generally get something decent, for a head off of yja you can generally get something reasonable off of a less established artist for $200-$300.

If you go to Y!JA, set a hard limit for your budget and be prepared to lose a lot before you win anything. It is possible to win though, and without breaking the bank, too -- you just have to keep your eyes peeled.

Outside of there, you can check Mandarake for heads -- you see ok ones come up sometimes. Ebay has them as well, too, but they're usualyl grossly overpriced by scalpers. Etsy is your best bet, but I've yet to find someone who can do mouth mods. If you lurk here for a while, you'll see people trade names of who did their faceups in the west. Do you have any experience modeling or modding at all? it's not a unique skill. I've met lots of these people and they're not humble casuals. They've been hobbyists for a while and dolls weren't their first hobby.

I just wanted to preface with I met the Volks USA president 2018 at a convention. So a lot of information is dated.

We didn't talk about that (as I am primarily a BJD collector/model kit hobby person) but we ended up talking about the progress that happened with their resin based DD models they were making (he said they were still in prototyping phase so a long way to go) as well as we learned that they were going to drop a new line of DDs at the US Dolpa (which is the ICON line).

When it comes to actual licensing I'd though imagine either they were approached by someone or someone approached them. Since Volks' inception they were a hobby store so they do keep their pulse on what the community wants, which is probably why they push people to write feedback because it is taken into account. Especially if more and more people mention it.

Where do you like to buy outfits? Are the Volks outfits good, or do you prefer different companies?

I bought a wig from Volks, and when fitted over a head there's a spot where the wig cap isn't flush to the head (it stands up on its own behind the center of the wig, making the hair there bump up). Is this just a symptom of a wig cap that's a little too big for the head, or is this normal? The product's description said that it would fit a MDD, but maybe this is as good as it gets?

Honestly my problem with Danny is his attitude. So to answer your question, it's as hard as anything else new and unfamiliar, with the added bonus that you will stab yourself with the needle multiple times.

It's really not that bad. You have to remember you have to be able to make a decent living to get into this hobby. Everyone is actually polite, patient, and professional.

The line was handled as a lottery; whoever's number was drawn was the beginning of the line. If you did something like that like AX, people would chant and borderline riot. People here just took it. And when finally inside the dealer hall, it wasn't a Black Friday style smash and grab. Nobody was running or even power walking. Everyone still queued up orderly all the way to check out, even when it got massively crowded (and hot; I was among the first 20 in).

As for guy to girl ratio, of course there's way more girls; I'd say 3/4 were women of varying age, averaging 20s-30s. The youngest I saw was a 12ish year old girl with her mum looking for stuff to make a Nezuko.
The guys are mostly kempt (but you can tell they're on the dorky side), and surprisingly some looked normie, but they could've just been there with a gf.
All in all as long as you carry yourself with self respect and humility you'll get along with people in there, girl/guy or not.

I forgot to mention that, I was aiming to get a tan D'coord this year (2 years ago they had a ton up for lottery), so I was a bit disappointed with this limited lottery lineup. I didn't bother entering any of them. I was also aiming to get either a Ranka, Sheryl, or Momo (they usually carry them at cons), but the only limiteds they had were these lottery ones, and the typical standards. The lotto system is a Japanese thing. Dollpa, Dollshow, I-Doll all do this for early arrivers. It helps curb early lineups and table rushes. A similar principle is done for concert tickets.

Secondly it's not accurate to compare entering Dollpa to an event like AX. That's like comparing a gallery exhibit to a trade show. They don't order the lines at Comiket for example.
