Just finished Tag 2015 / リアル鬼ごっこ.

That was, uh... special. People talk highly about this directors other movies but this one was honestly very trashy. Both acting and writing were really bad. I can see it being maybe kind of fun watching it in a theater with friends (that I do not have) though. But alone it was not very enjoyable.

But I'd never watch a live-action adaptation of a Fukumoto manga because even if the actors are great and the story would definitely work as a drama/movie, the Fukumoto "sense" will be lost. I just can't imagine Ten, Akagi, Kaiji, Kurosawa and many other Fukumoto characters without that distinctive art style and in real human body. Also no ZAWA ZAWA SFX is a minus from me.

The movie was okay. You can tell it is a manga adaptation, because it clearly is just the beginning of the story. I was somewhat surprised to see that the manga's reception on Amazon Japan is extremely harsh. There's so many 1 star reviews writing giant wall of texts bashing the work it's comical in a way. I can kind of understand it though.
Moreso than the script itself I want to highlight the acting here however - specifically the acting of Yurina Hirate as Hibiki. It was simply amazing and I loved every second she was on screen.
Akui Hibiki's violent outbursts despite her cute looks and introverted personality create a large gapmoe for when she does actually act cute or smile the few times in the movie - and Yurina pulls it off absolutely naturally. I especially loved the forceful handshake scenes (握手して！). Only after the movie did I find out that she is an idol and I ended up watching a highlight video of her on Youtube and am now considering getting into idols. That's how powerful she is. It's insane to think that she's only born in 2001, yet puts most actresses who have been in the scene for years to shame. She has a bright future ahead of her.

5/10 (10/10 for the lead acting however and worth a watch for that alone)

Finished A Chorus of Angels / 北のカナリアたち 2012.

This movie is just unfair. It's impossible to go out of it unbiased because of how gut wrenching the last 15 minutes are. Been a while since I've cried that badly. I think the middle parts were kind of lacking, but whatever, the ending is so good that I forgive it.

Finished Confessions / 告白　2010.

Good performance by Takako Matsu (who by the way looks like a carbon copy of Arisaka Miyuki, just a bit older). Her monologue in the beginning was amazing and made me think the movie was going to be equally amazing, but those first 30 minutes really were the best part of it. It tried to juggle far too many things for its own good and became convoluted. You can tell it is a book adaptation.

I'm not sure if I can recommend it anymore, at least until I see the direction it's taking.
The premise itself is interesting: a doormat who's always tried to fit it has a breakdown at work, so she decides to start everything over and live true to herself.
But it's episode 3 already yet she can't get rid of her ex boyfriend, and she's already sleeping with a fuckboy who's fucked the whole town or something.
Instead of spending more time on the main character's "soul searching", deciding the direction her life should go in, making friends etc, you get a plot revolving around her failed relationship with men neither of which seems mentally stable. I'll keep watching and hope it gets better

They are all self contained. They do sometimes reference previous seasons in passing or have cameos of old members.

Currently three eps in the latest one and the pacing is good and the girls are cute.

I am keen on the original series but the pacing is a bit slow initially. They all have memorable moments and characters. I would say opening new doors and closing door (the feature length after boys and girls next door) are definitely the weakest.

How did I miss this all these years? This is so good.
