vocaloid culture is based on a cardinal virtue that a lot of japanese vocaloid fans and producers alike seem to observe and appreciate: 和 aka Harmony. the ability to have everyone who wants to be in harmony to have their needs and feelings acknowledged and respected. It's like having everyone fit inside of a big circle. There's two fatal flaws on Harmony: firstly, there's a limited capacity as to who can be in harmony. Secondly, everyone MUST appreciate and observe Harmony or else the system will fail, just like a set of christmas lights: ALL of the christmas lights must be working and if a single one of those christmas lights decides to go out, so will the rest.

with that in mind, try to imagine a big circle with your favorite vocaloid singer in the middle with the japanese vocaloid fans. Now try to add in the western vocaloid fans to the mix. By adding in the western vocaloid fans into this big circle, the two big fatal flaws are exploited. The western fans don't usually seem to observe, appreciate, or even know about harmony at all. The japanese vocaloid fans know this very well and, because of that, only keep their doors open to those who are a part of the japanese culture or a very, very carefully selected few outside of japan who are capable of observing and appreciating harmony.

Going to my first Magical Mirai in Tokyo on Friday. Any tips from anons who’ve been before? What I’d really like to know is how quick the merch sells out. I’d like to get my hands on some if possible.

Depends on what you want. Some stuff sells out really fast while some never does. Last year the thing that sold out fastest was the belt (and I'm still mad about it). In Osaka, not much sold out from the main merch booth; the random keychains and wristbands sold out, as did some CDs. You can check the official twitter for the notices they posted. The stuff at the other merch booths sells out depending on what the booth is, so a lot of stuff at the GoodSmile booth will sell out, but the booth selling glasses cases probably won't. This year in Osaka I got there at like 6:30 and the line formed at 7 (noon opening); I got everything I wanted easily and probably did not need to get there so early, but Tokyo will probably be different. If you have any doubts or worries, get there as early as you can; I'm still kicking myself about last year and Snow Miku this year.

That's true. What I meant by mentioning that a lot of people have problems (me included) was that when you say

Anyway, lesson learned; The Japanese are really really fucking weird with social shit. Their habits are so alien to Westerns we might as well not try because inevitably all we do is piss them off. I've had to deal with Japanese clients with my business in the past and now as a rule of thumb I won't do business with any of them and save myself the headache.

The language barrier just intensifies the miscommunication between our cultures to the point they usually end up exploding at us. The Japanese love to do subtle 'read between the lines' shit that is absolutely deaf to us English speakers and they'll be charming and act like everything is fantastic and at the last second without any warning blow up and after that you're dead to them.
