Yeah. The story is technically solvable by the end of Episode 4, but most don't get it until later on. I personally didn't figure it out until the "17 people" truth at the end of Episode 6.

I think the only way I would have been able to figure it out is the "disappearing Kanon" aspect of the story, which means I still wouldn't have figured it out until Ep. 8 with Bern's riddle, where she says, "If Shannon dies, Kanon also dies." At best, optimistically, I might have been able to get it during the creepy Shannon part in Ch. 7, but I just took Will's word for it that, "He isn't allowed to do that (yet)," and forgot about the whole exchange. I pathetically had to consult the wiki after I was stumped with the Sayo Yasuda confession and how it related to Shannon. I guess I'm just much more of a fantasy guy, and I take what's stated in the writing to be true, even if the book is constantly telling me that the magic scenes are just embellishment. All I read was, "Sayo becomes a witch," and I figured she literally became a witch and kept reading like a dumbass.

I also didn't figure out Ch. 2 Higurashi until I read Ch. 5, so I think I can say I'm just fucking bad at mysteries and riddles.

I love Ryukishi's writing, but he has the highest peaks and the deepest lows, and his attempt to make her into a nuanced character was a generic fucking pit, compared to his explanation for Maria's "uu-uu," which was Mt. That was the whole point of the logic error, to spell it out to the reader in case they hadn't figured it out. If you read the part with Erika trying to solve it again there are plenty of hints trying to get you thinking along the right track. The logic error narrows down the amount of possible solutions drastically so if you think about it enough you should be able to get the right idea, especially with the number of people truth at the end. That said I'm still dumb and wasn't thinking about it entirely properly

Also I don't get what you mean by people being locked up. Wasn't it just that we know nobody left the room that "everyone else" was in but people could leave from the room that Shannon and a few other people were in?

I didn't understand how Kanon or Shannon could escape from the room unless they were never locked up. Because, after all, Shannon/Kanon does have to LITERALLY switch with Battler, right? Sure the game doesn't "go on," but someone has to be physically able to switch, you can't say, "Kanon switched with Battler, while Shannon stayed at the guest house." There has to be an explanation for how Sayo can escape the guest house even if the game master wants to pretend that Kanon and Shannon are in different places at the same time.

Ah, I think I get what you mean. Shannon's room isn't sealed, but Kanon's room is. So for the purposes of the game, Battler says "Kanon leaves his room and switches with Battler then escapes the closed room with magic," but what's really happening is that Shannon leaves the guest house through the window, and "becomes Kanon," who couldn't be locked up because there can only be one at a time, switches with Battler, and then turns back into Shannon to "kill Kanon" so he doesn't exist in the room anymore. Still, that's a fucking hard trick to figure out without knowing that "Kanon is being used as an image," and doesn't have to escape his own room. Did anyone online figure out the mystery of Umineko before the Answer arcs were released?

The "death" of Kanon and/or Shannon just refers to their personalities. So Yasu decides to "kill" whoever loses the love duel, because the love duel represents Yasu deciding which personality she's going to live on with. That's how Yasu can shoot Nanjo at the end of Episode 3 even with Shannon and Kanon confirmed dead in the red. That's what the Shannon revival scene represents, Yasu "killed" the personality Shannon but decided to play the role of Shannon just a bit more to talk with George.

Like I said it's kind of a mean trick but if you reread the story you'll be shocked at just how much forshadowing there is. Both stuff on the game board that emphasises Shannon and Kanon and forshadows a lot there, and stuff outside of the game board that implies that stuff like personality swapping is possible. In fact I'm pretty sure in EP4 there's a scene where Battler straight up says "say it in red, nobody in this story goes by multiple different names" and Kinzo says "I can't!". And in EP3 Battler brings up the idea that even though "Jessica" didn't kill Nanjo maybe she has another personality, and instead of saying "no that's dumb personalities don't count" Eva simply says "Jessica's body is not able to commit murder regardless of personality".

Their first VN Tsukihime is a cult classic that a lot of people love, and we were promised a remake ages ago that they keep assuring us is in development but they never have anything to show for it. Fate/Stay Night was great, so was the fandisk Hollow Ataraxia and some of the spinoff stuff was fun too but a lot of the old TM fans are just sick of Fate by now. The problem is Fate garnered a new audience that isn't interested in anything other than Fate, so the company keeps shitting out new Fate stuff even though this series has no business being stretched this far.

Basically imagine if the Umineko anime was less shit and blew up in popularity, and then imagine if Ryukishi decided to just stretch Umineko as far as possible instead of making anything new. Imagine if he promised some new Higurashi thing that people were excited for but instead he keeps making new Umineko stuff. And imagine if this new Umineko stuff was garbage that's ends up feeling like an insult to the original work, taking the characters and ruining them for the sake of pandering to waifufags. Stretching the series way further than it was ever designed to go, just because there's a new audience who demands more Umineko waifus at the expense of the series's integrity. The build-up in the first half makes it even more jarring. The story hypes up his arrival to Hinamizawa as if he were the second coming of Christ, with Oryou, Mion, and Rika making hamfisted speeches about a new wind fixing the village.

Those scenes might have made sense in they were in Minagoroshi-hen, where Keiichi did actually help unite the village. But he does fuck-all in the final arc.

Meakashi-hen and Tsumihoroboshi-hen are perfectly fine. It's the final two arcs that are where the series goes downhill. The government conspiracy and the increased prominence of the supernatural stuff detracts from the low-key grounded nature of the previous entries.

Plus the characters feel a lot more shallow with their issues being so easily resolved by convenient dreams. Compared to how he was in Onikakushi-hen and Tatarigoroshi-hen, Keiichi of the final arcs comes as a really generic anime protagonist.

And while it went a tad wild at the end, the craziest Tsumihoroboshi-hen ever got was having two teenagers fight on top of a rooftop. It didn't turn everyone and their mom into some kind of former Spec Ops agent or martial arts master.

What does this all mean?

My theory is that Ciconia will deal in some way with the 5th dimension/metaverse where Hanyuu's clan originally came from and where the Umineko meta takes place.

Okonogi was like 50 in Umineko and he became rich as fuck thanks to the Ushiromiya assets, so he was able to survive far into the future thanks to super expensive artificial organs and robotic implants that only the super rich could afford in 2030. His lifespan was prolonged and he lived long enough for scientists to develop a cure for aging (aging is already considered a potentially curable disease IRL). He was able to afford that miraculous cure too and is still alive far into the future, with parts of his body artificially reconstructed like an android.

Somehow, he gets involved in illuminati shit thanks to his vast wealth that he made sure to keep increasing over the decades. And he ends up taking part in a government project based on future discoveries about quantum physics and the existence of alternate realities that can be visualized from a higher dimension.

The futuristic technology in Ciconia has already been shown in the trailers, but I bet there are all sorts of crazy futuristic machines capable of tapping into the 5th dimension where the witches live. THIS is how Lambda and Bern, as metaphysical beings (that only called themselves witches in Umineko to fit in Beatrice's world), get involved in the story.

Maybe everything that happened with the Okonogi in Higurashi and the Okonogi in Umineko was part of the third Okonogi's plan. The Ciconia Okonogi from the future, who tapped into the multiverse and caused all of that to happen using his alternate universe incarnations. And his knowledge from the Higurashi universe allowed him to recreate a virtual projection of Takano that acts exactly like the original person. Or maybe it's an android based on her appearance.

Okonogi's plans are never made totally clear in Higurashi or Umineko. In both stories, Okonogi seemed to be in for the money and had some great plan in mind. Maybe his upbringing was better in Umineko and that's why he's less of a bastard. Or MAYBE he's being controlled by his alternate universe version from the future using some weird technology that lets people project their minds into their other selves from across the multiverse.

Seriously. I refuse to believe Okonogi didn't have bigger plans in both universes. I also refuse to believe he and Takano are just expies in Ciconia. They are the same fucking people.

Maybe Ciconia Okonogi is not Umineko Okonogi with an extended lifespan, and os simply a different Okonogi who needed the events of Umineko and Higurashi to happen to achieve some goal in his own world.

The meta world was a proper multiverse in Higurashi, but the meta in Umineko was more like a higher dimension where human thoughts and concepts exist and adopt physical forms. Like, the Ushiromiyas are dead for sure in millions of different fragments, but their meta selves are a "concept", an "idea" of them created by the collective consciousness of the public thanks to the Rokkenjima Mystery sparked by those message bottles. So the meta versions of the characters are not REALLY them, or their souls, or anything like that. They are more like "clones" of them in a higher dimension, the world of ideas and concepts.

Which would mean that this 5th dimension where infinite alternate universes exist as "fragments" is also a world of ideas whose inhabitants are unconsciously created and destroyed by the minds of humans. In this metaphysical dimension of the mind where ideas and concepts are given form, billions of fragments float around and they cointain the very universes where those concepts are generated by human minds.

This also explains Featherine's library. Every story ever published, hell, every story ever imagined, can manifest in this dimension and the people portrayed in those stories can exist for real here. Featherine herself is a persona imagined by Ikuko, but she genuinely exists in this higher dimension. Same with Dlanor, Willard, the court of Heaven and all that crazy shit. They represent concepts as imagined by Yasu and Maria. Other versions of the same concepts might exist somewhere out there.

The fragments floating around in this world of concepts are REAL universes, like the ones in Higurashi, so there's really no contradiction between both series and their meta worlds.

Her explanation in Matsuribayashi makes it obvious that we are supposed to interpret those old demons as "aliens", but aliens that come from a higher dimension and can create third dimensional bodies for themselves at will aren't your usual concept of an "alien".

They could easily be onis or some other mythical race from the Japanese folklore. They manifested in the conceptual 5th dimension, along with their entire world, powers and culture as imagined by the old Japanese tribes. And at some point a group of them entered the real world through a fragment, were unable to escape their physical bodies and had to fight with the villagers who saw them as monsters from the Japanese folklore. That's when Hanyuu fell in love with a human and gave birth to Ouka and the Furude family, which explains why Rika has the ability to produce miracles (Matsuribayashi ending) and can be given some of Hanyuu's powers to access the sea of fragments in the 5th dimension.

It also explains why Rika is the reincarnation of Hanyuu and the only one that can see her. Who came up with the story about the 8th daughter in a row being the reincarnation of Oyashiro-sama? Some old fucking dude far into the past. But since Hanyuu was a conceptual being and her entire race of oni still existed as a concept in their original dimension, the concept of the "reincarnation" and the exact details of the prophecy were applied to Hanyuu and became real.

It's just like how the youkai in Higanbana have powers, rules and personalities based on random stories that children made up. They exist as they are because they were imagined in a certain way.
