Also a happy birthday to Dolls in Pseudo Paradise and Hidden Star. But August is full of Touhou anniversaries because of Comiket.

why was that the game that most of the west first got into?

>> No.21853792

Because memes, unironically. EoSD came out in the perfect time, coinciding with the boom of internet culture. Because it was so popular in Japan of course otaku from the west took notice. If EoSD came out in the 90s then it would have been the last game.

Most people in the west don't own a PC-98 or know how to emulate it, but they have Windows.

I think he's asking a legit question. What Touhou memes were there in 2003? Barely anyone in the west knew that Touhou was until like 2005 or 6. The claim in >>21853792 is that EoSD came out at the "perfect time", which of course is untrue because there were games before and would have continued being games after because they are doujin games and not AAA games from some studio that will bankrupt itself. In the west at least, it was still a little before widespread broadband ruined the internet permanently and allowed people to easily obtain anything and connect eastern and western culture. By the time it got popular in the west, you had PCB, IN, IaMP, and PoFV, and probably StB as well that could have been played. Memes began to pick up in the west at that time, but any of the other games could have become popular in the west instead.

>>21855013 and >>21854640 are better answers to the original question in >>21853738, as it is simply the first game the original western internet Touhou pioneers would have been able to easily access.

it got the perfect timing: it was the first windows 2hu game while the market wasn't overloaded with waifus and fandoms.
plus it got a coherent cast, overall Western theme instead of literal who buddhist/taoist stuff, and the music was pretty memorable.

I'm probably wrong here but I think Ronald McDonald Insanity was a lot of Western peoples first exposure to touhou. I know it was mine. I watched it a bunch of times when I was a lad and eventually learned that it was a 2hu remix, which of course led me to EoSD
