Ww2 is kinda irrelevant. You can draw some mascot wolf-girl, or hunter-girl, or vampire-girl or whatever theme based on the ship's name, like AL does. You can go full military/navy and put girl in a uniform, tied to their country or origin or something, like that kickstarter game, I don't even remember how it's called.
KC does neither. And it's great. Couple threads ago someone posted snippets of interviews where devs explain that that was the explicit intention to popularize mecha musume - they're not difficult to draw. They're just regular girls with rigging slapped in the back, you can't draw the rigging - just draw the girl, still recognizable. If artist wants, he can separate the girl from her ship counterpart completely and it will be within the rules. It's fine.

Don't start with a big one. Try smaller, easier models to begin with, they are usually a lot cheaper and offer you a good training.

For ships, try to get one of the older Revell ones, for example, they aren't the best kits around, but inexpensive and a good start. They also don't have difficult stuff like photo ecthed metal parts, chains or stuff like that.
Also, keep in mind, those things need space. A 1/700 carrier is already around 30 cm or more, a 1/350 one easily takes 60 - 70 cm of shelf.
