What does /jp/ look for in a protagonist? A noble spirit? Kickass powers? Hax skills? For me it would be a sense of personal justice that isn't easily abandoned. Like they would always have something to stand for no matter what happens. Pic related.

A good protagonist can, even when presented with a ridiculously difficult scenario, such as the impending destruction of the entire branch of possibilities that his universe is in, manage an utterly mind-bending escape and manage to bring about an ending where everyone survives, Blink Winkel-style.

Even if he doesn't have a face.

Generally experienced. I don't want to watch some newbie own the shit outta everything because he/she is the protagonist. I want to see them doing methodically tedious shit just to make victory possible. Like planning relentlessly then having a hitch and having to throw the plan out and come up with a new one. Shit like that.

A manly spirit. A plus if they start out completely normal and become a hero through actual effort. I despise normal protagonists who suddenly discover that they have powers to make them some kind of demi-god.

And competence. Just being able to reason in hard situations looks much more respectable than crying until he's magically saved by hax powers.

To be fair, it shouldn't be so surprising. The reason they are so over used is exactly because they are so popular.

Yeah, I get it, popular doesn't automatically mean good, but sometimes I like a good honest hero doing what is right. Making such a protagonist great is in how well you give them their own identity outside of that generic cluster with their own flaws and troubles.

>> No.2169927

I dislike self-rightous protagonists who cling to an ideal, but rather I prefer someone who has a goal, knows what they're doing and how to do it. For example, rather than seeking a concept like justice, without any real plan other than doing the right thing would be against this. Instead, someone who wants to win and won't mind getting their hands dirty to do it would be suitable.

At the same time, a complete self-interested bastard is someone I'd also hate. They'd have to have morals, but wouldn't be shackled down and trapped by them.

Rather than special powers, they use skill. Not the kind of cunning planning that evokes Death Note imagery, but relying on insight and seeing through obstacles. In general, also using experience over innate ability.

... I can't remember one goddamn character that fits this perfectly though.

I liked Clare. Even though she was weaker than everyone else, she was still determined to get strong enough to kill her arch enemy. She never gave up, even in a hopeless battle, and was willing to destroy herself to order to defeat her enemy. She was also kind of a pedophile.

Claymore (manga) is good up until Peita ends which as I'm sure you've heard isn't how the anime ends in that place. After that it gets a has good and bad chapters.

Stop reading Death Note, ideally after LADIES. Seriously, it's terrible after that. It's pretty terrible before that too at times, but it has some good bits to mellow it out. Seriously overrated.

I suppose the same could be said of Claymore, but I don't think Claymore pretends to be anything more then Berserk with genders reversed to a different world war.

I don't think I'm even that far yet, and I've been reading DN for years now, since my sister first showed it to me.

>I did enjoy the Clare/Priscilla fight in the anime and thought that Clare's awakened form was fucking awesome,
The problem with the ending wasn't the fight, but how it ended. Even the actual premise of the fight seems ridiculous if you read the manga - Clare should be unable to kill Isley, let alone Priscilla. Priscilla is clearly the most powerful lifeform on the entire continent, so much so that everyone from the Abyssal ones to the Organization are afraid of her.
Plus the anime ends before Isley's motivations during the Pieta incident can be explained. It's a shame really, it was a beautiful plan.

>but I also heard that the manga after the Northern Campaign gets kinda dodgy with Yuma and TRYING HARD.
Eh, Yuma's only in one chapter, and she doesn't do much.

>> No.2170174

>>2170117

I always figured that the only reason why Clare nearly defeated Priscilla in the anime was that she was confused by Teresa's essence in Clare's body and Clare's willingness to awaken just to defeat her, and let her guard down just enough until Raki stepped in and cockblocked Clare from dealing the final blow.

Protagonist of what?

The standards have to be different for the game and the non-interactive storytelling. You know, the game protagonist just has to win every time, that's the whole point of playing, so the story must make this bearable by not making him/her too much of an asshole and too much of a retard. On the other hand, protagonist of traditional fiction can be basically anything, as long as the rest of the world reacts to his character accordingly. No plot hax and Mary Sueism is enough, after all we don't even have to like him, we just need to find his story interesting.
