This thread is for the discussion of untranslated Japanese visual novels.

What are you playing? What are you looking forward to? What have you finished? You know the drill.

Playing this. Honestly, Astral Air and Hoshimemo are better when you just individually look at their common route or other routes. Those games fall apart as a package though, especially because of the hilariously terrible main heroines that aren't even there most of the time.

Irotori no Sekai is a lot worse when it comes to group dynamics and the likes. In fact, the writer doesn't even really do group dynamics. Every character has a link towards the protagonist, but pretty much no link to any other character. Given how important the surrounding field of a character is, to give them depth and development, that's biting the game in its ass pretty hard. The redhead feels like lowest tier of otaku-bait, while the others are okay. Except the protag, who is kept dumb for padding reasons. Gets a little too much after some time. Why would a dumb nut like this guy be relied on, like ever? Well, padding. And I suppose Shinku telling him what to do all the damn time salvaging things.
When the common route finally starts to do something, it's so abrupt and comes way too deep out of the ass, simply because the writer thought it's a good idea to do 10 hours of nothing before. Doesn't work. The Shinku stuff towards the end of common also felt pretty dumb, mostly thanks to the protagonist and writing again.

But hey, at least this time the main heroine isn't terrible. Sure, a large part of her being best girl is because there's literally no competition in the game, but whatsoever. I'm going to try one route, and if that's not changing my mind, I'll probably never see Shinku's route. Route enforcement, yay.

Give it a try too.

It reminds of Durarara. Not as far as content goes, but in the style of storytelling. You have various people belonging to various competing groups and the point of view shifts between them.

The theme of 一章 is indeed チカラ and the exploration of its forms, like its title says. Not in some philosophical sense though. You simply have physically powerful characters fighting, weaker characters scheming and it all gets mashed together. The fights feel unique in how the author focuses on the descriptions of the physicality of attacks and wounds characters get - meat and bones sticking out everywhere, fluids spilling all around. I was hooked since the end of 1話 and even more so in 4話 and 5話.

For 一章 I played the version from here https://kokoron.madoka.org/mirror/D/mechanical-girl.html cause it's voiced. Technically the game's pretty rough, even if it uses Kirikiri.

Japan seems to like the 0 risk "you already know the outcome when the arc starts" drama, where ultimately nothing really happens anyway. I don't. Or at least otherwise I'd have a hard time seeing why something like Gensou no Idea could be considered good, where the outcome is always obvious and the good guys never even really do anything, as enemies tend to just give up, suicide or I don't even know. Kinda hilarious, but it doesn't want to be that.

Also story and gameplay are just general ways to call these categories. It doesn't actually mean "plot" and "battles" or whatever. Take the Tales of Xillia 1&2 MC dynamic. In 1 you can choose the character to play as but at its core the author meant them to be just vehicles the player drives. They werent player characters but playable characters just like any of the other party members. Then you have the sequel where the director admitted the formula the main series has used up to that point excluded the player, which is why Xillia 2 was made and the MC was silent with dialogue choices as his only dialogue because he is the player= player character.

Thats why VNs arent self insert medium unless they add things like a silent protag (Not having VA doesnt counts) or being nameable/unnamed.
If you self insert into those non avatar VNs that just means you are desperate for attention so you recluse yourself and play mental gymnastics to self insert into characters you arent meant to.

There's more than just those two though, and what makes something "legendary" to you seems very arbitrary. Demonbane not only has a higher vote count than it, it's also rated higher. Nitroplus is also more respected in general. So it wins in both plain number popularity and perceived goodness.

Thanks for this. Not sure I really want Google having a log of all my eroge interests.

It's a shame VNDB doesn't take some inspiration from EGS though. The way tags(/POVs) are able to be contributed alongside a comment explaining how exactly that tag(/POV) pertains to the game is really useful. That said, this still wouldn't fix possibly the biggest problem with VNDB, which is that the weighting system on the ratings doesn't take into account whether or not something has been translated, so most untranslated works get their scores absolutely decimated in the search results.

On EGS at least, you know that all the ratings are based on the original Japanese version of the game and not on potentially very shitty translations (or worse yet, fucking machine translations... apparently there are also people on VNDB who rate games after only looking at the CG sets without ever having actually played them).

I don't care about the ratings personally, but the admins on there are a bit too autistic about what's allowed on the site and what isn't, with arbitrary rules that seemingly change every day. Just allow all eroge like EGS and don't play dumb games like "it has to have 36.5637% of narration to pass as a VN". Not to mention they play favorites and have a bunch of translated RPGs on there anyway like https://vndb.org/v17046 because it's popular with EOPs. But if you dare to put an untranslated eroge RPG on there you can be sure it's going to be deleted within the hour.

>> No.21723673

>>21723438
The ratings on vndb are actually usually fine for untranslated works, but you can only search for the bayesian rating, which obviously works really badly if there are only 10 votes or something.

>> No.21723697

>>21723505
There's no % rule. The rules are actually pretty simple:
-The main reason to play the game has to be reading the story (thus no gacha for example)
-There needs to be consistently narration if there's gameplay (thus no typical rpgs)

There are plenty of games that shouldn't be there, which is explained with "it'd be more of a hassle to remove them than to leave them", but this part is definitely questionable. I'm sure everyone however has some games they'd rather not want to kiss good bye though, because technically several Rance games, Eushully games and so on would be disqualified.
That said, keep in mind that vndb is NOT about eroge. It's about visual novels and isn't focused on ero featuring works. They do this shit precisely because of that. They don't want Persona, Final Fantasy and co there. EGS is extremely inconsistent there. You have some Persona games actually right there, while others don't get added. Heck, someone even added an Etrian X entry that nobody uses. In other words, it's fine because people don't care enough there. What do you think would happen to vndb, if they'd allow everything?

For vndb to be less bitchy, there'd need to be a rpgdb as good as vndb. People simply really like what vndb offers and want everything they care about there. That's good and bad though.

>> No.21723754

>>21723697
>That said, keep in mind that vndb is NOT about eroge
Yeah and I think that's dumb. They care too much about staying true to the sites name, and too little about logical functionality. I don't think triple A RPGs should be on either site, but VNs/dlsite games fanbases tend to overlap a lot so it just makes sense to put them together. There really isn't any negatives to having more games on the site. As you said, there already are a million exceptions (and for some reason the exceptions are skewed towards translated games) so it all feels very arbitrary. There ARE gacha phone games with only dialogue on the site even.

Hey, I'm new to VNs and how to get them. I want to get a copy of Air from Key in Japanese, but it's not on Nyaa and that's really all I know. Hello, friend.

On Anime-Sharing, there's an uploader called Ataraxia. He's been inactive for years, but his uploads on Depositfiles have survived to this day.

Among them is Air Standard Edition with voices patched in. All in Japanese, of course.

That's what I'd get.

in most cases there's only 2 ways to grab the script which is either from the game files or from hook software and you can make all the excuses you want but i don't have to explain the implications of the latter, right? so lets focus on the game files. not all games have the text in a raw format and sometimes have things like names or game engine script included and you'll have to go out of your way to remove all that. even if you have a raw script, not all lines are created equal and if you have a game with 30 hscenes and half of them are "ahn...... ahn...... ahn......" you'll probably read through those much faster than normal lines

The point thing might just mean, that you don't get points for the 300 yen you get discounted, but not sure. Would make sense, as points are based around what you pay. But as far as I get it, you only get points once you actually write a review, and I doubt I'll do that. I bought too much and don't even know when to play this shit, and you only have a good month or so to do it. Got mostly rpgs (3 from strawberry bose, and 3 from others) and 4 short little doujin all-ages vns. Honestly, you can get so much for 5k yen during a sale like this. (and I even have one game among it that wasn't cheaper..) Without the sale and coupons, I wouldn't even get the 3 strawberry bose games for that money.
