I went at it for about three weeks at 200 a day, which got me from about core 2k to 4.5k. A lot of those words were business related and completely new to me. But I made sure to do a lot of reading every day too - especially news and articles - which helped a lot of it sink in. Reading was particularly useful for remembering the common words that come up again and again since you're seeing them in context. I completely forgot the less common words though, since I only ever saw them among hundreds of other anki cards.
I spent about 1.5 hours per day on Anki to do the new words and reviews, so it was a bit too exhausting to keep it up for the whole deck.

exactly
what the fuck is it about japanese that has this effect
i think it has to do with the close connection with the young adult/teenage online gaming community?

great tips man.
if i followed these as a beginner i probably would have been a lot more efficient with my SRS lol. i've learned my lesson now though and progress feels much faster and anki less stressful.
i would add though that if you've seen the word once or twice before and actually remember the meaning/reading, you don't have to add it. seems obvious but some beginners are prone to overdosing on anki and not trusting their memory, adding things "just in case" when they'd have been better off just continuing to read.

It's not really that, it's more about switching back and forth between two ways of thinking and the ways that impacts language. When I talk to Japanese people I have to mentally shift to a Japanese way of thinking to understand them and be understood properly, because the words they say have nuance and subtlety that don't translate directly into English. One of my friends speaks better English than I do Japanese as well, so we mostly communicate in it, but it's a bizarre version of English that's adjusted to make more sense to a Japanese mind and that really throws me off when I suddenly have to switch back to speaking normal English.
